  1. This is my favorite reference on Hopi baskets and basketmakers. Helga Teiwes is well aquainted with the subject and her clear, concise writing style and beautiful photographs are a pleasure to see!

  2. If you are looking for a great history book on Hopi baskets, this is the book. If you are looking for a "how to" book, this is not what you are looking for. It does state the technique used for various types of baskets, however doesn't tell you "how to" do those techniques. Beautiful photos, wonderful text, but not a "how to" book.

  1. This book has very easy to moderately complex patterns for baskets made of reed & willow. The discussion of different basketry materials is especially good.

  2. This book is truley a beginner book. VERY beginner. Since I have had a little expirience, I am always looking for new patterns and ideas. The instructions are clear and helpful for someone who has never woven before. So if you are just interested in a very basic, in and out, got to start somewhere course, this book is for you. Basketwork is beautifully illustrated with very clear instructions and a pretty wide range of projects. However, many of the projects would fall more into the catagory of "crafts" rather than "basketmaking"; like the fish mobile and a wreath. I feel like a better beginner book for someone who is interested in mainly making baskets, is Lynn Silers`, The Basket Book. Still, I think this book is a nice addition to a collection and is beautiful enough to put out on the coffe table.

  3. Great book - clear, concise, easy to follow instructions and advice, with several delightful baskets to make. Polly teaches basketry at City Lit College in London and her ability to inspire her students is reflected in this book.

Watch out though for the titles if you have any other of Polly's books, as I found out to my disappointment - Basketwork (New Crafts), published in the USA is exactly the same book as Basket (Craft Workshop), published in the UK!

  1. The author's love of nature makes pleasurable reading. Excellent guide to collection and preparation of natural materials. A very good addition to a basket maker's library. Quick and easy referenc

  2. This is one of the best books I have ever used on making baskets using recorces available to us in nature. It gives a complete list of different plants that can be used, where they can be found, the time of year to gather them, and how to prepare and dye them. There is also step by step instructions on different projects like coiling, twining and plaiting that one can make with the materials just gathered. I highly reccomend this book to anyone interrested in basketry or natural fibers

  3. If you want to make baskets from local materials (any locality). Jensen tells you what to look for, how to prepare it and how to make a basket with it. Several techniques, many materials. Everything except bamboo and cane.
