  1. of Shaker work, philosophy and history. A good book to have in your library as a Seller or Collecter. I do wish there were more examples of their work shown.

  1. This book covers everything from choosing your reed to dying. It also includes easy to follow directions for different weaving patterns, as well as directions for 20 different baskets. It doesn't have an color pictures, but the diagrams are clear and concise. For someone, such as myself, who has almost no knowledge of basket weaving, this book is a great addition to my library.

  2. As an intermediate weaver, I would recommend this book to weavers from beginning to advanced. I especially liked the thorough diagrams, advice for dyeing, the nice borders, and, of course, the finished products. If you like original basketry, you'll love this book.

  3. I bought this book on the urging of a friend. I think that the information is really good but I don't feel that there's enough step by step information for the beginner. I do, however, like the great deal of helpful hints. I just wish that the technique section did not look like it was drawn on a very old computer. I find some of the techniques very hard to follow due to the lack of quality picts.

I especially don't like the basket designs. The book does not have a detailed (close up) photograph of the finished product. After weaving, you can't see enough detail to compare your work to the author's (other weavers).

I prefer Lyn Siler books. They have a great deal more detail of the finished product.

  4. This book has fuzzy pictures, it seems to me hurridly written, with supposedly "original" baskets, but these baskets are the most common type with maybe one little difference to call it "original." I have made one basket from this book, just to get my money's worth, and the book is already falling apart. I have many basket weaving books, and this is probably my least favorite.

  1. This book has lots of great information on growing, preparing and using English willow to make baskets. The title suggests a more general topic. There are several example baskets with good instructions and diagrams, but if you're looking for instructions on flat- or round-reed baskets, look at Lyn Siler's books instead.

  1. This is a real sleeper of a coffee table book for basket makers, collectors and enthusiasts of this craft in particular or the arts in general.

It accompanied an exhibition, but offers much more than great color photos of an amazing variety of approaches to the craft by really top people.

There's a history of modern basket making, lots of 2-page "Artists' Voices" (picture/philosophy combos), and specialized chapters on 8 different techniques.

If, for inspiration or reference, you want a knockout survey of the most wild and gorgeous art pieces being made today, this is your book!

  1. This book provides plans and directions for 28 baskets in a variety of styles: New England, Southwest, Victorian, etc. The directions are clear and concise with an added section for potential problem areas such as rimming and lashing the basket. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for projects and plans

  2. I bought this book when I was beginning to make baskets. This book is a must for the beginner and the advanced basket maker. It has several diagrams for each of the basket and has at least one color picture for each basket. Ms. Siler even has several photographs of variations of the baskets. I really enjoy this book and feel that it is a wonderful resource for all basket weavers.

  3. This book is a great basket book - good, clear instructions. In general, I would recommend Lyn Siler's "The Basket Book" as a better beginner's basket book. The projects in "Handmade Baskets" are a bit more advanced and unusual which for a non-beginner makes this a great addition to "The Basket Book".
