1 comments about Aquariums: Windows to Nature.
- This volume contains all you could ever need or want to know (and more!) about the history, Victorian to modern day, of the world's aquaria and oceanaria. It spans the globe entire, from the displays at the Crystal Palace to the Osaka Ring of Fire and its resident whale sharks! An awesome volume, with a handy guide to most of the world's internationally renowned marine centres. And who better to write a book on aquaria than Leighton Taylor, the man who discovered the Megamouth Shark?

1 comments about Fascinating Koi (AQUALOG Special).
- All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Koi carp species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.
This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Koi carp in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.

2 comments about An Essential Guide to Choosing Your Tropical Freshwater Fish (Tankmasters Series).
- Being a beginner aquarist myself, I found this book to be brilliant. It has a few pages on general fish information, as well as an explanatory book outline in the beginning. A page per fish information follows this. Each page on a particular fish has the following information: Large color photo, General information, Size of fish, Compatibility issues if they exist, Breeding habits, Origin. It also has a section indicating the ideal aquarium set-up for each fish that includes the following: Water quality, Temperature, Food, Number per tank, Minimum tank size. I found this book very helpful in choosing my fish and realizing the importance of compatibility. You would need to do some extra research, but the book is essential for beginners!
- I am also a beginner in the hobby. This book has very limited info. If you are interested in the fish that are in the book, it might be worth it. Doesn't cover very many fish either. There isn't any info on what fish is compatable with the fish that they are talking about. It does say the temperment of the fish or how many fish to keep together, but if the different types of fish aren't compatable, what difference does it make how many you have ?? Many better books out there !!

5 comments about Innes's Exotic Aquarium Fishes: A Work of General Reference (21st Edition).
- I first read the Innes Book, as we called Exotic Aqaurium Fishes by Dr. William T. Innes back then, in the late 70's, in its 19th edition. I was a teenage hobbyist back then, and the book was biblical to me and my peers. Recently, I discovered my old copy in a box of books we had stored in the garage, and was delighted to flip throught the pages and see that I could still learn new things from this grand classic by one of the pioneers of fresh-water ichtyology. Hopefully, I went to Amazon.com to see if I could locate a more recent edition (the 19th edition mostly sports black and white photographs and some of the scientific data on specific specimens is dated). I was delighted to discover the 21st edition! With valuable illustrations, taxonomic and biotope contributions, as well as descriptions, and transportation and husbandry advice, the Innes Book is a fine complement to Dr. Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Tropical Fishes, which is much more complete (7800 photos) but which only mentions common names in the index (60 pages of it!) and offers only the most succinct coded advice on fishkeeping, due to it's immense range. I recommend both books to any tropical fish hobbyist who wishes to maintain even a small comprehensive library on the subject.
- William T. Innes was the Godfather of the aquarium hobby in the first half of the 20th century. And "Exotic Aquarium Fishes" was (and many feel still is) the greatest book every wrritten for and about the aquarium hobby.
Innes was the publisher of the Aquarium Magazine and knew his stuff. But more importantly, he was a man of letters; The Innes Book (as it is called) reads like prose, not just boilerplate or dull descriptions so common in churn-em-out Axelrod/TFH books of the latter half of the century. Innes spent years writing this book and it shows. The color plates (painted photographs) are exquisite as well. But caution: MAKE SURE you purchase the edition published by the Innes Publishing Company - not Metaframe or TFH (which altered some of the text, changed the format, and produced it on lower quality black and white paper after the copyright ran out). A great gift for the hardcore fish nut in your life and a historic document!
- as old as this book is it still provides relevant information. the only thing negative i can think of is its range of species which could be wider in my opinion. a great book at [price] or less.
- Four and a half stars.
My does this book bring back memories. I acquired my first copy back for my birthday in 1968 and spent many a night pouring over it as though it was sacred scripture.
It still makes for valuable reading but fortunately the hobby has evolved to the point where fish survival rates are much higher especially for the beginner due to more modern techniques than those elucidated in this book. In that way its advice about setting up an aquarium is quite outdated. However most of the fish described and their morphology and behavior are still the same and the information offered still of great use to the aquarist. Descriptions of each species are literate and used to send off my mind to dream in the same way as a child's mind would dream when viewing a window full of toys.
I believe this book will remain a classic for years to come.
- William Innes is widely considered the dean of the aquarium hobby in the US. My parents purchased this book for me along with my first 20 gallon tank when I was in high school, in the early 70s. It is truly a pleasure to read. He has a graceful, engaging writing style, and his book is full of practical information. While some parts are out of date (an antibiotic is referred to as a "wonder drug") don't let this dissuade you. This is an outstanding first book for a new hobbyist, and yet remains useful even for the more experienced hobbyist. It is one of my all-time favorite books, and I have a lot of books!
I have the 19th edition revised, which has a YELLOW and White cover, and says 19th edition revised in a red banner near the top. After this edition, the rights were acquired by TFH, to my great regret. They "revised" it by putting in a lot of crude product placements for their products. It really detracts from the charm of the original. Try to get the 19th edition revised, with the yellow and white cover.

4 comments about Complete Introduction to Breeding Aquarium Fishes (Complete Introduction).
- This book covers almost 30 of the most commonly held aquarium fishes giving detailed descriptions on each covering feeding, water parameters (pH, dH and temperature) and of course breeding. In addition, there are several pictures displaying each species including fry and eggs. All in all a good book which gets you started right away.
- Excellent first, or only, book on breeding the most common aquarium fish. Its all here - equipment, temperature, diet, and other master's secrets. You are sure to have success using this guide. And the price is great!
- this book is ok for the beginner but i believe ther are beter books for the same price such as "tropical fish, the rising generation". the rising generation covers more species.

2 comments about Chinese Goldfish.
- I've had this book for many years in a German translation and even though the translation isn't always correct, the photographs and discussions alone opened my eyes to another world of goldfish! This book illustrates well that it is the Chinese who have created the original colours and forms of all known fancy goldfish on the market, barring perhaps the Tosakin, and illustrates very well the differences in taste in breeding between the Chinese and the rest of the world. Curled Gills, Dragon Pushing a Ball, Goose-Head Redcaps, etc., etc., this book (in my translation) aslo presents these Chinese fish with their original names; a wonderful book if you love goldfish!
- This book has been on my living room table for years. It goes into GREAT detail on how to breed and care for goldfish. It even tells of certain leaves you can add to a tank to help with the health of your fish. At least once evey few months someone (including me) sits on the couch and reads through this interesting book.

- This book is really great for the person that loves a big book with wonderful color pictures. It's one of those books you can just sit down for hours and look at all the beautiful pictures and detailed information of each tropical fish listed. There's also a detailed illustrated guide on how to set up a home aquarium and a list of common illness and treatments for sick fishes. I highly recommend this book for any aquarium enthusiast!
- a great book with good information my only complaint would be that it does not cover a wide variety of species.

1 comments about AQUALOG Special, Brackish-Water Fishes: All About Species, Care and Breeding.
- This is a great book with lots of info (more than other books) about the habitats the most frequently found brackish water fish are found in. It has scats, monos, gobies, skippers, datnoids, etc. Ther great thing about this book it tells you about the fish listed as brackish that really are not. Something unique to this book is it discussion on how to set up a tidal system for your fish to mimic natural systems. Whgat is missing is typical aquarium info like ph,dh, etc for the fish and their tolerance levels. This book is more about the fish itself than how to keep it in my opnion. Of course there are tons of books with the aforementioned info so they probably decided to give something new. There is some info on water parameters but this is told in a general sense (like D. micro. needing freshwater while D. quadri. and D camp. need brackish without telling you a recommended SG). Well worth the buy for new info on brackish fish. Puts to rest some misconceptions. Buy it if you are a brackish fish enthusiast. For brackish beginners I recommend Neale Monks book as this book is for those that already have the basic information.
