1 comments about Frio Duo Pen Cooling Wallets Keep Insulin Safe Between 60 -70 Degrees for up to 45 Hours with No Refrigeration +(Free Syringe Case a 3.98 Value).

  1. I'm not giving this 5 stars because of the price It will only be worth the money if this last for many years.

I wanted some of my independence back and After getting chewed out by my nurse for letting a whole bottle of insulin get ruined for having it in my purse during the summer, I knew I had to do something to protect my health.

The syringe case will hold a preloaded syringe so you can leave the insulin bottle safe in the fridge at home, I got this size so if I take longer trips I can keep a bottle in there along with one syringe or two syrines. This keeps me from having to constantly worry about how long an ice pack will last or if the ice pack is too cold, and water is easier to find than ice esp if your a camper, hiker, fisherman.

The cooling wallet is only cool enough for already opened insulin and is not made to store unopened bottles that should be in a fridge.

The concept of the Frio is so simple, and MUST have ventilation to work, but they have invented a way to keep most of the dampness off of everything in my purse or a loose pocket, as well when activated its "padding" protects the insulin.

These wallets skimp on material to the point that it's a tight fit, so make sure you get a size that will work for you or a size bigger.

My wallet didn't come with the syringe case that is shown in the picture, instead it came with a yellow syringe case which disappointed me because I ordered an extra YELLOW syringe case for my other medicine and didn't want to get them mixed up, when I called The Insulin Case Shop about it 1-877-829-8024, they where very nice and helpful explaining that they need to change the picture and that they are the ones offering the syringe case with the Frio and offered to send the case in the picture, so If you're an air head like me (brain injury) and it's extremely important that you have different or even same color syringe case for your different medicines, you might want to call them, or just order one of each color.

Frio wallet is ugly as heck, so don't think you'll be making a fashion statement with it, its not something you would want to put into a delicate purse because it's just ugly, but, with it being black makes it inconspicuous and for men I'm sure they appreciate that there aren't any pretty flowers and ribbons on it. I don't take any points off for it's ugliness because the wallet is about health and practicality.

I don't know if I'd buy another Frio because of it's price, but I would buy another cooling wallet made from another manufacture, it would be nice to have an extra one or two, But I would/will continue to shop with The Insulin Case Shop.

  1. A really cool idea especially if you've ever dropped an insulin bottle before and had to pay out of pocket for a new one! I just don't use it as much as I expected to, especially since we're on the pump and don't have to take insulin everywhere with us anymore. Good idea if you have tile floors!

  1. The case is a little big to carry around when You just want to carry a couple of needles and a bottle of insulin. It does keep cool for about 4 hours but not all day in hot weather. When the weather cools a little I'm asure things will improve.

  2. I take insulin before dinner, and use this case when I am leaving the house for an entire day, and need to carry a needle for the pre-dinner dose.

    Pros:
    1. The size of the case is great. It holds 100ml needles, and they fit comfortably even with the plunger pulled back pretty far. This was one of the things I was worried about, since the online info gives no hint about this.
    2. The case is sturdy enough, and the needles are fit in with elastic, so there seems little danger of them being discharged while carrying them. I have had this case in my backpack for some pretty rugged hikes with no issues.
    3. The "blue ice" packet that comes with it fits great, and keeps the hypo cool, but not freezing.

    Cons:
    1. The ice packet does not last long enough. On a hot day (mid-90's), I usually park in the shade, and keep the case under the seat. The ice pack keeps things cool for about 5 hours. I could really use another 3 hours or so to get me from when I leave the house to dinner time. I ordered an extra ice-pack, and with two ice packs, it seems to just make it.
    2. The case has a separate compartment for the ice pack, which keeps it from coming in contact with the needle. This keeps the insulin from freezing, which is something to avoid. The problem is that if you use the second ice pack, you have to jerry-rig something to keep the second ice-pack from coming in contact with the needle, which will freeze the insulin. I had a friend sew a nylon pouch for me, and that works ok, although it is just not as elegant as it could be.
I also tried putting the second ice pack inside the case, and then putting the needles in their own container. A toothbrush travel tube works great. The only problem is that the needle can move around, and potentially discharge when the case gets bumped. I am sure you could foam-pad your way around this problem, but again, that is what I bought this thing for in the first place.

    Overall

Overall, it provides good mechanical protection, and is in a reasonable form factor. I am a little disappointed with the thermal performance in that it seems to fail what would be a fairly typical real-world trial. On the other hand, it is $15.

There are several other compartments and straps designed for insulin pens and other thing-a-ma-bobs, but I don't use them, so not sure how well they work.

A holder for id and emergency info would have been a nice touch.

A meter, logbook, or a copy of War and Peace are not likely to fit. A tube of glucose gel, or a pack of life-savers fit just fine.

As discussed above, consider ordering the spare ice-pack with the case.

  1. I'm extremely disappointed in this poucho. I've used it twice now and I found that it barely keeps my insulin cooler than room temperature. I've tried both the soaking it in water and by running water over it - neither made a difference.
