  1. A really cool idea especially if you've ever dropped an insulin bottle before and had to pay out of pocket for a new one! I just don't use it as much as I expected to, especially since we're on the pump and don't have to take insulin everywhere with us anymore. Good idea if you have tile floors!

5 comments about Frio Cooling Wallet - SMALL-Keep insulin cool up to 45 hrs without EVER needing refrigeration!.

  1. The cooling wallet was a life saver for traveling with my insulin. TSA had no problems with the cooling envelope and it kept my insulin cool for all of my flights. Small enough to fit in my purse, this was a great buy.

  2. Used as directed and lost 3 pens when the temperature hit 100 degrees. Foolish me, I kept thinking that the error was mine because of all the supposed reviews about how great this item is in hot weather. We had a small and a large pack. The small pack was essentially worthless, the larger pack seemed to be large enough to keep for for last for a few hours. Works great as long as the temp doesn't go much over the recommended maximum temperature for your insulin and/or you keep it cool by adding some kind of ice pack. If you're expecting the answer to having to carry around all the stuff in the heat...this isn't going to be it.

I'm very surprised at the information below as I researched the company an they're from the UK and haven't been in business for 7 or 8 years from what I could tell.

I also looked on the FDA website under the approved devices section and could not find their approval there despite claims that they were approved by the FDA for diabetic devices. Perhaps it's a recent approval and it's not there yet or perhaps I missed the information though.

  3. I've been using a FRIO cooler pack for insulin for 7 or 8 years with very happy results. Insulin doesn't need to be refrigerator-cold, it only needs to stay below 80 degrees F to be safe. The three secrets are 1) make sure it's well-soaked and holding plenty of water, 2) make sure it has moving air to "breathe" because evaporation is what cools, and 3) keep it out of direct sunlight because that will heat the bag, which heats the water, which heats the contents. My first pack lasted all these years of daily use, it's time for another only because the fabric is soiled. I'm a lifetime customer.

  4. The first time I used the Frio cooling wallet my insulin was cool but not as cool as advertising for the product claimed. The second time I used the wallet, it not only did not keep my insulin cool but the wallet oozed slime when I soaked the wallet as instructed. What felt like crystals inside the wallet seemed to be disintegrating when wet. Doubt that I would ever purchase another produce from Frio. Wrote to the manufacturer and heard nothing back from them.

  5. I bought this item for travel storage of an injectable for rheumatoid arthritis. I found the case didn't get below 65 deg in temp which is ok for a few hours but be careful of temperature for longer storage.

5 comments about Frio Cooling Wallet - LARGE -Keep insulin cool up to 45 hrs without EVER needing refrigeration!.

  1. I bought htis recently for my parents and find this very useful. This holds cool for two days (believe me.. 48 hours full) despite out heat beat trip in our car. Amust for anyone who wishes to keep medicines cool and stable. I will recommend this for anyone.

  2. I have had nothing but good luck with my Frio. It has gone with me to Britain, Italy, and in the next few months will accompany me to Poland and Greece. I have also taken it camping with me in the North Carolina summer heat without any problem at all. It has always remained cool inside, regardless of the outside temperature, for at least 48 hours (usually longer) before I have to recharge it. It is now four years old and, while it takes a bit longer than ten minutes for the initial charge, still working as well as before.

  3. I've used this wallet in high temperatures. Keeping it inside a hot car with windows rolled up during very hot days. The inside of the pack always stayed cool. Been using it daily for around a year now. I don't use it with the outer cover though.

  4. Used as directed and lost 3 pens when the temperature hit 100 degrees. Foolish me, I kept thinking that the error was mine. We had a small and a large pack. 5. It's by far the easiest way to keep supplies cool for a long period of time. I simply drop it into cold water when it becomes smaller and it's reloaded to continue cooling. Great for work and traveling. I use it every day!

1 comments about Dia Pak Daymate.

  1. I take insulin before dinner, and use this case when I am leaving the house for an entire day, and need to carry a needle for the pre-dinner dose.

    Pros:
    1. The size of the case is great. It holds 100ml needles, and they fit comfortably even with the plunger pulled back pretty far. This was one of the things I was worried about, since the online info gives no hint about this.
    2. The case is sturdy enough, and the needles are fit in with elastic, so there seems little danger of them being discharged while carrying them. I have had this case in my backpack for some pretty rugged hikes with no issues.
    3. The "blue ice" packet that comes with it fits great, and keeps the hypo cool, but not freezing.

    Cons:
    1. The ice packet does not last long enough. On a hot day (mid-90's), I usually park in the shade, and keep the case under the seat. The ice pack keeps things cool for about 5 hours. I could really use another 3 hours or so to get me from when I leave the house to dinner time. I ordered an extra ice-pack, and with two ice packs, it seems to just make it.
    2. The case has a separate compartment for the ice pack, which keeps it from coming in contact with the needle. This keeps the insulin from freezing, which is something to avoid. The problem is that if you use the second ice pack, you have to jerry-rig something to keep the second ice-pack from coming in contact with the needle, which will freeze the insulin. I had a friend sew a nylon pouch for me, and that works ok, although it is just not as elegant as it could be.
I also tried putting the second ice pack inside the case, and then putting the needles in their own container. A toothbrush travel tube works great. The only problem is that the needle can move around, and potentially discharge when the case gets bumped. I am sure you could foam-pad your way around this problem, but again, that is what I bought this thing for in the first place.

    Overall

Overall, it provides good mechanical protection, and is in a reasonable form factor. I am a little disappointed with the thermal performance in that it seems to fail what would be a fairly typical real-world trial. On the other hand, it is $15.

There are several other compartments and straps designed for insulin pens and other thing-a-ma-bobs, but I don't use them, so not sure how well they work.

A holder for id and emergency info would have been a nice touch.

A meter, logbook, or a copy of War and Peace are not likely to fit. A tube of glucose gel, or a pack of life-savers fit just fine.

As discussed above, consider ordering the spare ice-pack with the case.
