5 comments about TomTom Rider 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Motorcycle Navigator.
- When TomTom came out with a bluetooth GPS unit for motorcycle, I was excited about going wireless. However, I've found some disappointing features, which include: inadequate volume of the bluetooth headset, lack of software support for my Blackberry 8703e and Motorola V710 phones, poor quality, poor service, poorly design desktop computer software, poor mount for car use.
Because of the lack of support for my cell phones, I cannot use traffic report and other neat features available that require data connection through my cell phones. I cannot sync my address book to the Rider, I cannot use the Buddy feature, the weather report feature, etc. Make sure your cell phone is supported for use with the Rider before buying it.
The Rider was defective soon after purchasing. I also bought a Go 910 that was also had to be sent back for a replacement.
No strap was offered, even though I registered for one that was supposed to be provided free. I get nervous whenever I go over bumpy roads with the Rider on my bike.
The car mount is very cheaply and poorly designed to accommodate the Rider, although the mount is sturdy and sticks well to the windshield of a car. To get the unit in and out of the mount, the power connector has to be unplugged manually from the unit. It's a pain to deal with a tiny plug and disconnecting/connecting it when I have to make many stops and have to take the unit off and store it out of sight of would-be thieves.
There is no built-in speaker. Therefore, in order to hear spoken direction from the Rider when in a car, a bluetooth headset has to be available and connected to the Rider. When used while riding my bike, the volume from the bluetooth headset is audible below 45-50 mph. Beyond that, it's almost inaudible. The higher the speed of the motorcycle, the less can be heard through the bluetooth headset.
The on/off button is very difficult to activate.
The Rider has very poor documentation/manual.
I've dealt with support from TomTom, and, even though the people there seemed genuinely nice and tried to be helpful, they didn't have their act together. For example, my Rider repair and return was delayed despite their promise to send it out promptly. The repaired unit was not sent to my office as requested. So I had to drive 40 minutes each way to Fedex to pick up the repaired unit.
Since this is one of five GPS units that I own or have owned, I think the Rider does a few things well, as GPS units should, but its design and the desktop software that is used to manage the Rider are so poor that I cannot recommend buying this unit, especially at the high price that I paid as an early adopter.
- Just letting you know that release 2 of tomtom rider is already available in Europe and Australia and features the Cardo scala-rider wireless Bluetooth headset. I assume the US version will follow soon.
- This GPS arrived in a very timely manner, was easy to install, tech service seems to be excellent since we had to call them because the unit is discharging in only a few hours. This could be a problem with the unit making full electrical contact with the cradle mount or it could be a situation with the motorcycle's charging system. Must say that the unit and the Blue Tooth voice command system is excellent. One recommendation would be to increase the volume level of the unit beyond what is available.
- I have used the Rider for one riding season now. While it has come in very handy I have to agree with most of what has been written here.
A few comments to save someone some of the aggravation most have experienced. First you will need to upgrade the SD card because the memory in the supplied card is insufficient to operate the unit properly. Without a larger card you will have to deal with freeze ups and reboots. Next go to the TomTom Home page and update the installed software to the latest version. Last of all be sure you have a tether attached to the head unit. When you hit a pothole the unit can detach from the mount.
This unit is a great idea but the design is not without flaws.
- After a relatively few uses, the cradle doesn't make contact with the GPS and your motorcycle power supply won't charge the unit. I have had this happen on 2 units. Since batteries are nearly irreplaceable and limit you to a 4 hour trip, this is a problem. Some web sites say adding solder to the back of your unit may solve the problem, but others don't see it as permanent. This makes it hardly worth the price. I hope TomTom has a solution.

- This Ram Mount was a perfect fit on my Polaris Sportsman. There was a great fit for my Lorance GPS. There were extra parts included so that the mount would fit just about anywhere.

- I've had my TomTom GPS for about a year now and I have no idea how I ever traveled without it. Before purchasing my TomTom, I used the GPS on my cell phone. Typically this would freeze up, be extremely delayed or quit working at a critical time during my journey. Now with my TomTom I am confident that I will be able to arrive to my destination without any frustration. The screen is very sensitive and unlike many touch screens it never malfunctions. The images on the screen are also big enough to read from a distance, day or night. The night colors are very nice when driving long distances in the evening and the various views make it adaptable to any driver. Also, the volume is effective in even louder environments. There are many aspects that I like about my TomTom, but my favorite is the fact that it is very simple to use even when I'm on the road. If I need to make a change at any point in time, I simply go through the steps of changing the route without having to stop my car. The TomTom doesn't delay when making a route change and even automatically adapts the route if the driver has made a wrong time or if there is construction that will take longer to get through than driving a different route.
I do like the product; however, I wish it could be better mounted in my car. The mount occasionally falls off while I'm driving. Also, the adapter for the car charger is not conveniently located. If the battery is low, I have to remove the device from the dock and then plug in the charger, this could also be my it doesn't stick as well...constant removal. I would definitely recommend this product for frequent travelers.
- I am very disappointed in the TomTom One 3rd Edition. The maps and icons are ugly and jagged. The routes in some areas put you MILES and MILES out of your way or in some cases, send you the wrong way on a ONE WAY or want you to do something equally dangerous. One heavily advertised feature of the One, is its ability to tell you about what time you will arrive. The arrival times are GROSSLY inaccurate. For example, a trip that takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes shows on the One as taking over two hours. This is because the TomTom One does not figure in your actual speed or recalculate as you are traveling as the Garmins do. There are some neat things about the One, however, without a decent map system, bad routing and inaccurate arrival times, all of the neat little extras (downloadable voices, even UGLIER icons and map colors, warning you about your speed or when near a school etc) mean nothing.
On another note, the company gives you ONE chance to update your maps for free. When I plugged in the TomTom to my Macbook and connected to the company's update service, I was told my U.S. maps where up to date. Within the week the new version map was released. I plugged in my One and proceeded to update. I was told I had to pay for the new map. So, you get ONE shot at updating. In comparison the Garmin policy lets you check and update as many times as you would like during the first 60 days.
IF YOU NEED AN EXCELLENT, BUDGET GPS IN THE U.S., CONSIDER THE GARMIN 205 or 205w (the 205 is around the same price as the TomTom One at Walmart for example). Better looking, smooth 3d and 2d maps, 3d vehicle icons, accurate arrival times and mileage and much MUCH better routing. Go with what the pros use.
- Works great. You have to get used to its timing of directions when driving. For instance if you're driving 65mph and its says "right turn" its not now but in 1.8 miles. At 30 mph the same instruction is about 1/2 mile or less. First time I used it was in Miami FL. I had never been there before and it got me around with little to no problems (contruction detours). Bought another for my wife's car.
- Christmas is coming so save your cash! Why purchase something you can get for five bucks.
Go to gifts4xmas.co.cc and sign up. Complete ONE offer - I would recommend Netflix
All companies are well known so there is no risk involved- give it a go! I got my TomTom and many other things this way, so don't miss out.
I was a sceptic once but now I am SO glad I gave it a chance.
Many items to choose from!
They send your gift Free of charge
Enjoy!
- There are issues, some errors (like "keep left" when the exit to I-270 is actually on the right), British English (like "motor way" for interstate or other limited access highways). Nevertheless it is a convenient device, very helpful, but I would recommend consulting a map before you use it, because it can detour you to a longer route. The fatal point is, the map upgrade is $99, while you can get a new one (presumably with an upgraded map) from Amazon for $137. The best bet to upgrade the map is probably selling the old one in eBay (or Amazon) and get a new one from Amazon.

- When i first bought this product, i was scared because its so cheap it mite not be real and wouldnt work.
at the first when i was tryin to align it, it was afternoon, and i went to top of my houses roof(i m in middle east, its summer so imagine on top of the roof at afternoon when temp goes around 50C) and i did a mistake of truning my Navigon software along with the GPS software provided and it took me a couple of minutes to realize i need to run one software only to make it work. but when i restarted my JASJAR, and started Navigon (ofcourse i paired the devices), it just worked and never gives me less then 9 settelites.
I went to Salalah and it showed me the way and helped me get back home from mountains and deserts even tho Salalah was always cloudy, never saw the blue sky, but still it would get settelites within 15 seconds. unbelivable. too good to be true
- I have a Palm treo 650. I loaded up Tom Tom software. The original GPS reciever that came for Palm went bad so I has to replace it with the Holux. It works great, but, sometimes its takes a while to connect to a satellite.
- A very useful product. I use it with my PDA phone. Reliable bluetooth connection. Very good battery life.
- An excellent product. Acquires satellites quickly, even from a cold start. Small size makes it convenient to place in a car or even in your pocket. A long lasting battery and strong bluetooth connection make this a keeper at a bargain price!
- DOA. Could not sync. Tried everything in the manual.
Then searched on the web, it seems this happens often.
Buyer beware.
