  1. When i first bought this product, i was scared because its so cheap it mite not be real and wouldnt work.
at the first when i was tryin to align it, it was afternoon, and i went to top of my houses roof(i m in middle east, its summer so imagine on top of the roof at afternoon when temp goes around 50C) and i did a mistake of truning my Navigon software along with the GPS software provided and it took me a couple of minutes to realize i need to run one software only to make it work. but when i restarted my JASJAR, and started Navigon (ofcourse i paired the devices), it just worked and never gives me less then 9 settelites.
I went to Salalah and it showed me the way and helped me get back home from mountains and deserts even tho Salalah was always cloudy, never saw the blue sky, but still it would get settelites within 15 seconds. unbelivable. too good to be true

  2. I have a Palm treo 650. I loaded up Tom Tom software. The original GPS reciever that came for Palm went bad so I has to replace it with the Holux. It works great, but, sometimes its takes a while to connect to a satellite.

  3. A very useful product. I use it with my PDA phone. Reliable bluetooth connection. Very good battery life.

  4. An excellent product. Acquires satellites quickly, even from a cold start. Small size makes it convenient to place in a car or even in your pocket. A long lasting battery and strong bluetooth connection make this a keeper at a bargain price!

  5. DOA. Could not sync. Tried everything in the manual.
Then searched on the web, it seems this happens often.
    Buyer beware.

  1. Great product BUT what year's edition is being offered here? This year (2007) or left overs (2006). Buying maps for your GPS is like buying a record books -- who wants the old edition?

  2. Have had this for over a year. Have used it only 10-15 times - spent most of the time debugging / getting thinge to work. Peeves:
    (a) outdated maps
    (b) Repeatedly locks up with Axim x51v
    (c) Infogation website boasts "award winning" -- try googling and you will see this is a ogus claim
    (d) their website claims v4. Again, google it and you will realise this is v1 - branded as v4. If you use the software, you will see that if this is v4, they must be very very poor developers as most companies get things right by v3.
    (e) A year ago, their support (responsive in autoreplies but useless in solving real issues) e-mailed me saying new release will be in a few weeks. It has been a 11 months now.
I tend to give very reasonable reviews but this company stinks. Please try things really well before you buy. Or, stick with known brands like Garmin. I thought I was saving bucks last year when the $200 gps+software package was on black fri for $100 - ended up wasting $100.
    Cheers!

  3. QUICK REVIEW: This navigation software is a step up from the DeLorme or Microsoft offerings for Windows Mobile. It gives decent performance for basic routing and navigation, but it does have some drawbacks. If you already have a PDA and GPS receiver, this is a fairly low budget navigation solution. My detailed usage based review follows:

SETUP: I used this software with my Dell Axim X51v and Mobile Crossing Bluetooth GPS Receiver. Installation of Odyssey Mobile on my Axim was fairly easy although not the most intuitive. The main gripe I have relates to the maps. They are ~2.3 Gb so you cannot get the entire set on a 2 Gb SD card. I selected the states that I was least likely to go to and removed them from the set to be transferred until I was below the limit. While this will probably never be an issue, it does slow down the installation process.

Configuration of the software to use the GPS is similar to any other Bluetooth Serial Port device and presented no challenges. As for the other "Settings", I only changed the "Map Settings" to use "Map Mode" of 3D View and "Day/Night" of Auto Mode. That was essentially all of the setup that I did.

NAVIGATION: You can select your destination by entering an address, selecting from history, POI, favorites, or cross road. When entering an address, Odyssey Mobile limits the available characters as you spell out street names, cities, etc. to only allow valid entries.

Once you have the address selected, you can begin navigation by selecting "Go", or you can select "Save & Go" to store the address as a favorite.

If you simply want directions between two places without using a GPS, you can also choose "Set Origin" the select a destination.

ROUTING/REROUTING: This is *the* feature that must work properly. I found that for the price this software does a pretty reasonable job. In driving to and from work and around town, the routes that the software generates are generally what I would normally take. Rerouting usually took 2-3 seconds, and it seems that Odyssey favors a simple algorithm that skips to the next logical street rather than using U-turns.

I did experience a couple of things worth mentioning. One day I had to take an alternate route home due to a traffic jam. This caused about six rerouting calculations. The sixth one locked up my Axim, and I had to do a soft reset. It only happened this one time, and it could have been a combination of factors such as time since last reset and other apps used in that time.

The other is thing that is more of an annoyance involves losing track of the current position. I found that in "mix master" areas where you have multiple highways coming together, Odyssey could not discern which road I was on and recalculate the route. This could be an issue in an unfamiliar place.

GRAPHICS: This is an area where Odyssey is average. I installed the software in "Portrait" mode because my vent mount for my Axim would not secure the device in "Landscape" mode. This is where my biggest complaint with Odyssey comes in. The next turn, distance to turn, destination arrival time, and distance to destination are valuable information to be sure, but they take up a large portion of the map on the right hand side. It totally obscures the street name of the cross street when you are at an intersection. This may be less of an issue in "Landscape" mode, but most PDA users will be running in "Portrait" mode.

This is a QVGA application so it does not take advantage of the better resolution that my X51v has to offer. While the rendering is a bit jagged, it is not so bad as to be unreadable. It is more aesthetic than anything.

Otherwise the graphics are pretty good. Along the bottom of the display is the street you are currently on while the top displays the next turn. I tried both 2D and 3D modes and found that the map moves fairly smoothly. One other thing that could be better is "Night Mode". Most other GPS software that I've used uses a black background for night mode, but Odyssey uses a darker blue. I found this to be a little bright, but not so much as to make the software unusable.

SOUND: Being budget software, this is an area where Odyssey cut corners. While the quality of the sound is good (although somewhat device dependent), there is no Text to Speech. For the price I found this an acceptable trade off. However the directions are a bit more extensive than just "turn left". Odyssey tells you the difference between "make a left turn" as you would on a city street and "enter the highway to the right". It also uses "keep to the right" and "veer right" to distinguish lanes that can go either way at a fork vs. lanes that must take a fork when highways split. The final nice feature is that when you arrive at your destination, Odyssey tells you which side of the street it is on. This is handy for areas where street numbers are not easy to find.

CONCLUSION: If you are considering a budget GPS solution such as DeLorme for your Windows Mobile device, this is definitely a step up. Other software packages cost a bit more, but you also get more features. This is not TomTom or iGuidance to be certain. For the budget minded or those looking for an entry level software package, this is probably a decent choice.

  4. This is actually a pretty good product. I bought it over a year ago for my AT&T Tilt at a good price. It was easy to install and easy to use. The maps were a little out of date but the company promised a new version with new maps on their website. There were a lot of feature requests on the website that were to be included in the next update. The website with its promises are unchanged in over a year and I suspect it may have been unchanged for a year before that.

Pro: It works without having to have a constant internet connection
    Con: See above

Too bad, because it had a lot of potential.

  1. I expected a user friendly unit especially considering the size.
I have Windows XP and the user manual do not correspond with the XP format, confusing. When I go to Google Earth I could not download onto a map. If you want to hire a computer whiz it may work. I have 5 Garmin GPS units and they all work and download on Google Earth. I thought that this would be more what I need. I am going to return it!

  2. I didn't agree with previous review which gave BT-Q1000 only 1 star. Based on my experience the product works pretty good, however I only give 4 stars because the product has a few small issues. But for the price I think its still pretty good.

The good part is that the unit can used as a gps logger and blue tooth external gps unit. I paired up my Sprint Mogul PDA phone with no issues. I use PDA apps google maps and MS live search. GPS accuracy seems pretty good although I am new to gps so I dont have any previous experiences. Mainly use in my car and its picks up sat even in the glove compartment. The blue tooth range is very good. I usually leave the unit on and keep it plugged into the supplied car charger.

I also experimented using the logger feature. I am able to download the logger data into csv, nmea, or kml formats. The mapping button on the utility app doesn't work unless you install google earth. The program simply starts google earth and sends kml data to it to map. There are many logging options that can be set on the device. Its best to setup the logging intervals and kind of data you want to store before using the logging feature. Also there is a button called set default for google that set all the options so that it can create KML data that works with google earth.

The application crashes with some meaningless error message if you press the map button without google earth installed. The manual does explain how download it, but for those people like me who dont read the manual its can be misleading to crash without any good error messages.

I emailed the qstarz technical support about feature improvements and got a next day response that they will looked into it. Its nice to know they respond to email support. Since I have not had any real major issues I have no idea if they will really provide good technical support, but its nice to know they at least respond which is not always the case.

One gripe I have is the logging utility is limited in some ways. You can download data and erase the entire log. However, as you use it, you will find it would be nice to be able to selective save parts of the log, and selectively erase parts of the log. For example, if you log an entire days worth of movement, then later download the log you most likely will want to split the log into many separate events or paths. However the tool will not allow this. You can try to separate the data afterwards but the kml format its very hard to do because they send a single gps stream data into separate XML sections.

Additional gripe. The unit and utility is needs to be in LOG mode, but its not obvious. Again I know its in the manual, but its just not obvious. If switch on the unit to NAV mode and start the window utility some of the functions actually work, but most do not work. I know RTM.

Anyways despite the issues, I am happy with this unit.

  3. Refuse to do any software upgrade. Ask you to buy a new one to get a newer version software. Your product will not be supported within just few months.

  4. Works as billed. Very sensitive receiver - works on my desk in the house where my Garmin 60CS will not. Data logger is huge (100,000) points - newer version doubles that. Doesn't slide around on the car dash, setup is simple, AND it runs forever on a charge (well 30 hours, but I haven't been able to run it that long to test it. I keep recharging after every use just because I only have one battery, though I can plug the USB cable in and charge that way while I use it if and when the battery gets low.
Software utility is a little crude and there could be more information RE the options.

  1. Indispensable if you use your TomTom in a motorhome. Just remember to keep the instructions handy for a while until you learn which button controls what. There is nothing written on the face.

  2. it really works. no pointing. now i can put tomtom out of reach and still control it.

  3. This is an outstanding product! It works well with my Go 500. It nice to know that I will not have to reach over or pull off the highway to change any settings. It is very easy to use. It will access all the menu items. Highly recommend to anyone who owns a TomTom.

  4. The details for which Tom-Tom unit this accessory works with would have been helpful. Not only are there NO instructions; this unit only works with Tom-Toms before the 720 series... so I gifted this unit to my brother. There is no way to indicate how to "synch" the units nor to tell if it is "on or off"; no instructions... and I finally called the Tom-Tom Help Desk to resolve my problem. I am flabbergasted, after this much fiddling around with the object, to find out that I have purchased one that will not work with my machine. At least I have a use for it; and SOMEONE will be happy; -if they can figure out how to work it... I hope it really is fairly easy to figure out... no instructions anywhere.

  5. This is easier to use than your fingers touching the screen. Getting used to the controls takes a bit of time. No instructions.

Make sure when you recieve your order that it is for the proper TomTom.
I ordered the remote for the Go510 but recieved the one for the 520 which is bluetooth my 510 could not find this device.

I have purchased three units for myself and children and love them!
