5 comments about Magellan eXplorist Carrying Case with Belt Clip.
- I had a case for a Garmin GPS and it was just a belt clip that you slide on and off your belt, and unfortunately, it can come off your belt (which it often did) and you can lose your GPS unit for good.
This eXplorist case comes with a real nice strong wide and secure strip that you have to undo your belt and loop your belt through, so when you are out hiking, you don't have to keep checking and be afraid it fell off your belt, because there is no way for this case to come off without you taking your belt off! NICE!
It's not just a loop of string or rope either, it is better described as a belt or strip of tough material attached real secure to the case.
True, you can't quickly slide the case on and off of your belt as with a clip, but why would you need to take the case on and off, you take the GPS out when you need it and the case stays on the belt where it is safe and can't get dropped or lost.
For $7 this is a great case. I can get the GPS in and out quickly and easily. I like the secure, yet easy to open zipper as opposed to the velcro flap that my Garmin case has.
The only negative I would have is that I would have liked the padding to be a bit thicker, but I suppose I can always slide a strong piece of leather or something into it on the inside to better protect the GPS from an impact to the case. There is enough room to do this and still be able to get the GPS unit in and out without problem.
What else can you buy for only $7 today?
- This lightweight Magellan carrying case for the eXplorist series GPS weighs in at a mere .9 ounces (25.5 grams). It's made of Cordura nylon, not canvas, with a soft tricot fabric lining and it has a nylon web strap loop sewn on the back that will accommodate up to a two inch belt. Unfortunately, a negative is that the description says there's a belt clip of which there is none.
The case is thinly padded with one small nylon pocket sewn inside that will let you carry a pair of AA batteries and the little plastic box that an SD card comes in or a spare rechargeable LiIon battery.
The padding affords adequate protection of your unit when it's not in use while allowing the case to be flexible enough to keep it from digging into your waist line.
If you must have a belt clip, keep looking; otherwise this well-made case will offer essential protection for your GPS without weighing you down.
- I bought this from ANTonline.
This product does NOT fit all Explorists as their advertisement says.
It is not even close to fitting the Explorist XL.
I returned it in perfect shape.
I spent nearly 30.00 with shipping both ways and ANTonline refunded to me $2.43. The extra shipping was their fault and the restocking fees are ridiculous! I advise you to NOT throw your money at this poisonous enterprise.
- Protects gps pretty well. Didn't give it the extra star because of the wide loop. It's a little too wide to use it with a 'biner instead of having to wear a belt.
- This was a great accessory for the GSP I purchased. Made it easy to carry and was well made.

1 comments about RAM Mounting Systems Handlebar Mount for Garmin eTrex Venture C, Legend C, Vista C, Venture CX, Legend CX, Vista CX.
- Purchased this product due to the fact that I didn't know what I really needed. The only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star was due to the u-bolt that mounts it to the handle bars wasn't coated with anything, so the handle bars will probable have a scratch when I take it off. The product works great for my Garmin Etrex Legend. I used it for several long rides and it was nice to be able to adjust it to any angle. This is a nice item that works well.

5 comments about Magellan Triton 2000 Handheld Navigation System.
- Don't waste your money guys...unless you like the crashes...
This probably should have been released in the 80's...alas they are 25 years late...should I say anymore?
- The unit is has many neat option but the best one it the National Geographic Topo maps. Unfortunately after 4 months I have been unable to load the maps onto the unit. Many hours on the phone have yielded no results. Maybe it's my unit?
Sincerely disappointed.
- I agree with all the negative reviews!! This piece of equipment brings new meaning to the word awful. Had I read the reviews before my purchase I would be spared the time and cost of returning it. Software defects, can not delete routes after they've been programmed, screen slow to respond etc, etc, etc. Tech support almost worthless.
Save your money.
- You can use it only in USA. Just roads maps. Good product...but limited because of the support. I sold it
- Now that I have this GPS working with maps from TOPO! loaded in the SD card, this is a fantastic device for locating myself while hiking. The receiver works really well, and I have had no problems with the system crashing. There are lots of nice features, and I'm getting used to the menus quickly. Perhaps Magellan and National Geographic have worked out some of the bugs that bedeviled the initial release of the Triton series.
For context: I started using TOPO! in 1998, before Wildflower Productions was taken over by National Geographic, and I am used to using survey grade GPS devices and connecting them to computers. Even with this background, it took me over two hours to figure out how the get the Triton to negotiate with my computer. Magellan documentation for the Triton is hopeless. NG has a very useful support page that describes how to set up the Triton for communicating with TOPO!, but it is difficult to locate on their web page and it is not entirely accurate. But now that I know what to do, transferring maps is quick and easy, and the device works well.
Magellan's gps software, Vantage Point, is poorly documented and not very robust. Also, the documentation for the camera (which is not a very good camera) and the mp3 player are pretty much non-existent. Apparently, Magellan has a lot of faith in the abilities of the American consumer.
Final thought: this is the future of GPS. Who wants to use a device where all you see is a blank screen with a marching stick figure or highways? If you are out hiking, especially off trail, you need to see where you are on detailed topo maps. Garmin sells 1:100,000 topographic maps , but these are worthless compared to the 1:24,000 USGS topo maps that come with TOPO!. Yes, you have to purchase the topo maps from National Geographic, but you also have to buys maps from Garmin. Remember how awful the first digital cameras were? They got better because people bought them and financed the innovation that lead to the fantastic cameras we now enjoy. Magellan went out on a limb and created a great device that needs a bit of tweaking and a good manual; I'm happy to help support their innovation. Once the Triton is set up, it is very easy to use. I plan on using the Triton 500 for my college-level geology students.

5 comments about Magellan 702211 Bike Mounting Bracket.
- Clunky design. If you're not careful, the GPS doesn't click securely into the bracket. Your first warning that it isn't seated is the crash of the GPS unit onto the pavement. The mounting screws come without lock-nuts, and they loosen, letting the bracket rotate out of place. Switching the bracket from bike to bike is a real pain. And that price! For half the suggested price of this bracket, you can buy a high-powered, long-life bike headlight with a GREAT mounting system. Since there's no competiting product -- and the bracket does work if you put lock-nuts on the screws and pay very close attention to snapping the GPS unit in securely -- I'm recommending this product for those who need it. However, if TomTom or Garmin comes up with a better bike-mounting bracket, it will be the deciding factor when I select my next GPS.
- This bracket works perfectly with my eXplorist 200. Screw it onto your handlebar, snap the eXplorist in place and ride to your heart's content. I mostly ride streets and bike paths. The 200 is held tightly and has never fallen off the bike. If you go off-road, because of the weight of the eXplorist, you might want to secure it with some duct tape or Velcro.
- This mounting bracket has a number of shortcomings that make it difficult to recommend. First, mountain bikes typically have handlebars that are wide at the stem and taper and bend towards the grips. If you have a mountain bike there is a good chance the bracket will not fit your handlebars well. Second, if it does fit, the weight of the eXplorist will cause the bracket to twist as you ride unless you really tighten it. This is especially bad if you have a carbon bar. You may be able to mount the bracket close to the stem so that it also rests against it for support. This will keep it from rotating while riding.
If Magellan had made the metal parts of the bracket so that it could be rotated by 90 degrees it could be mounted on the stem. This is a far more stable area for something heavy. Unfortunately this is not the case. As another reviewer mentioned, most bicycle lights have better mounting designs.
- I got an explorist 200 as a gift and wanted to try is as a bicycle speedometer. Since it has a crude street map database I thought it might be useful on my road bike. I'm not very happy with it but that's a different review. The mounting bracket is big and clunky. It looks like the designer made a universal piece of plastic and then added a makeshift metal handlebar clamp. It's much heavier and bigger than it needs to be.
- I attached this mount to the handlebars of my Honda XR350R and it works great! The GPS unit is held securly and I have no problems with it moving around. Gone over 100 miles off-road so far with no problems!

5 comments about Magellan 730379 12-volt Power Adapter.
- Was sold to me as an accessory but wasn't needed because there was already one that came with the GPS. Had to return it.
- I purchased this power adapter for a Magellan 760 Roadmate navigator. I also ordered the connector for the navigator at the same time. The add from your recommendation had no indication of unavailablity of the part. They, after a month still have not filled the order and without the item I cannot use the power adaptor.

- perfect replacement for original which developed an intermittant after being caught in glove box door. A better replacement than the Radio Shack universal since the orignal fits better. I still use a rubber band to hold the power cord on to the GPS to prevent accidental separation.
- I bought this and been using it for a bit now. I have not had any issues with it and so far it feels like it's not going to break.
- THis power adapter works great...however I should have read closer to see what came with my navigation system...turns out I didn't need to buy this adapter:( Oh well that was my faught!

1 comments about Motorcycle / Bicycle Mount for Magellan GPS.
- fits with a lot of work on my Yamaha Venture. If you have an adjustable handlebar setup instead of the simple chrome U on most bikes you will have trouble mounting this. the rear of the clamp has a bulge that will make it not fit well between the clutch reservoir and the handlebar on many bikes.

5 comments about Magellan USA 3-D Mapsend Topo Software.
- Be careful, this is version 1.0. The current version is 1.5.
Amazon did the right thing and refunded my money.
- In general, I find Magellan support extremely bad, after upgrading my GPS from a SportTrak to an Explorist, I was inform that my existing software - MapSend Topo USA would not work, but some of things did work, such as Waypoints did transfer, but not without a battle. Once trying to transfer map regions is when I ran into the problems, only to be inform that I have to spend another 149.00 for the software.
Its too bad, they have a nice GPS, but the support is so bad, I have stopped using Magellan products.
John
- As a $9.95 promotional addition to my $49 eXplorist 500LE North America, it was a very good bargain. If I had paid the $200 list price for the eXplorist 500LE and found out I had to pay another $149 for this software and $99 for DirectRoute AND that the software purchase is locked to one GPS only, I would have been furious. As it stands, I seriously doubt that I would buy the DirectRoute software since I have a "real" driving GPS (Garmin C330) and pressing the 500LE into "Street Pilot" service would not be smart.
Now to the software. You must read the Readme.txt's to see that there is a patch that you MUST use to convert the maps before you load it onto the eXplorist units. I found that once I connected the USB cable *properly* to my 500LE, communications were automatic and a breeze. With an internet connection, the registration of the GPS, purchase of the Mapsend software and activation were seamless.
Topo information is great, 3D views are faster than Google Earth, but a little more limited and downloading the converted map sections are very easy.
As others stated, no trail information is on the software which makes this useless as a planning tool for hiking unless you have a real USGS topo map available. Now if you had your own trail information and this software, it would be great. That's what I intend to do for my hikes. It's too bad that I would not be able to make plans for a hike without the addition of a USGS topo map. That's what I thought I was getting when I purchased this.
- Their is very little detail and almost no backroads inc with this software, if you check out google earth or maps you will find 10 times more info and their not even selling you a product its their free. Its a crying shame that this company is still in business with the poor excuse for support and software design and usability.
- Just a heads up to those considering map send. I have an older version but the same issue may still exist for the new versions. Do your research.
1) The product "requires" the final disc (#3) to be in the cdrom drive to use this software. This sort of defeats the purpose of having a large disk on your notebook. This "feature" means that you will need to take your notebook and disc with you on vaction as opposed to just your notebook. Poor design and user unfriendly. I'm sure it is done for software piracy reasons but it goes beyond acceptability. JMO You will want a larger SD disk to store more maps to avoid 'bug'.
2) Haven't gotten it to work correctly yet with Vista even though I have downloaded their driver and followed the driver installation procedures. I can see the unit as a new device but I still cannot use the native fuctions for uploading maps to the unit. :-(
Personally, I'd rather pay a bit more and get software and a GPS that work more seemlessly.

5 comments about Magellan RoadMate 760 Portable GPS Navigator.
- did not like this product. takes time to calculate the position during start up. In today's world, it might be worthwhile investing products like Iphone instead of a navigator
- The RoadMate 760 works as expected except for a couple problems. You can't use a MAC to update the maps, only a Windows PC. Also, if you attach it to the windshield with the suction cup (as directed) on a bright, hot sunny day it will overheat and shut down until it cools off.
- Tons of POI and smart. Very intuitive about traffic and traffic patterns, where the slow traffic is and during what times.
- Big, bulky, but not terrible. Unfortunately when I called the Customer Service people to say that all of the sudden, for no apparent reason it just doesn't work any longer, they said, "sorry, but there's nothing we can do."
I liked some of the features, but, man, if the thing doesn't work, I'm stuck.
So- I bought a Tom-Tom One from RadioShack for $150. What a deal, and way better than the RoadMate.
- This is an old unit. It's big. The operating system is slow. It will freeze every once in a while. Magellan is TERRIBLE about their map updating. Magellan has TERRIBLE offshore customer support. I don't care if customer service is off shore, but let me talk to somebody who is empowered to solve my problems.
But even with it's old school computer voice, and now 2 year old maps... it works and it's better than not having a GPS.
However, in 2008... get a Garmin.
