  1. I bought the 6000T in April 2007 after doing research on the internet and looking at their website, which stated that you could download maps from their website and a map update would be available in August. Since I live in a area with a lot of freeway construction and the roads are changing all the time, I was very interested in this capability.

Come August and their website said the map update would be available in September. In September it said October. I called their support at the end of October and was told an update would be available by the end of the year. In the meantime I did download the 1.22 software update.

In December I checked the website again and came to find the update was available, but you had to purchase it on a CD for $80 - not the free download I was expecting. Since the unit was basically useless on the major freeways in my area I bit the bullet and bought it.

I got around to installing it the week before last, and come to find the map version it installed was Q3 2006 - already 18 months old. I tested it out anyway and as far as I could tell, there was no difference in the map database (at least for my area).

I called Magellan support today and spent an hour on the phone talking to various hindi individuals (I guessed they outsourced their call center sometime since October) only to be told over and over that the map update I purchased was the latest version (even though it was probably already on the unit when I bought it), and that there was nothing I could do about. Even when I pointed out that their website had posted misleading information about the nature of the update for the past 6 months, all they would say was (paraphrasing) "You're stuck with it - go away and leave us alone - there's nothing we're going to do about it".

If you need up to date maps, stay away from Magellan. Their products don't perform as advertised and the company does not stand behind them.

I guess they realized how crappy their products are because the Roadmate series has been pulled from their website.

  2. The devil is in the details. The unit works as advertised, but the "lock ups" are something I've never encountered before. I have a built-in unit in my car, and it has never locked. Mine 600T locked so severely once, I couldn't even turn it off or reset. That brings up customer service. I called twice, and my wife called twice, and neither of us could understand what the reps were trying to say. Offshore CS is NOT OK if the reps don't speak the language of the customer - or vice versa. Also be aware that this unit is officially "not a current offering." Wonder when the support will stop? The unit came without a manual, so if you want instructions to take with you, be prepared to print out 140 or so pages. All in all - not impressed with Magellan. The good news is the price has been reduced by 2/3.

  3. I have had this product for over a year now and was surprised when travelling from Mtl to NYC how this device directed me to drive through off highway country roads. I have tried to upgrade to a higher version of software 1.16 with great difficulty. My PC is asking for the Magellan Roadmate software. The unit never came with it. When finally located my Microsoft PC is advising me not to install it as it does not conform with Microsofts software conditions and it may harm the system. I have tried to contact magellans help ware, but have had no response. After reading all the horrible experiences from fellow magellan owners, i am frustrated enough to trash this unit and proclaim the truth, THIS SYSTEM SUCKS, and I for one do not recommend anyone to purchase a Magellan unit. If the company had any morals they would refund the money or excahnge all of their 6000T units for a model that actually works.

  4. I have had Magellan 6000T for over a year now and it seemed to be working fine overall with the exception of an occasional freeze up. However, from the past 2 weeks, the unit does not display the map and when any key is pressed, it responds after 5 minutes. The issue is not battery-related as far as I could tell since it is constantly charged and the battery indicator is green in color.
I had purchased the 6000T for 450.00 last year. From now on I'll stay with the cheap units. At least that way, even if the unit breaks one can discard it with less pain.

  5. Ok, I have had this unit for over two years. As stated before, yes I had freezing problems and it would reset and loose all the previous places I had been. I tried many times to upgrade the firmware to no avail and did spend countless hours on the phone with the India service center where I feel I knew more about a simple computer than the guy/girl on the other line.

Thank GOD I had an extended service program with the store chain I brought it from and they fixed it for me. Hope the map update goes a lot smoother.

The Unit now runs great and instead of the 5 seconds to turn the unit off now it's just two. Just wish they had a smaller mounting arm as the OEM one is too long which is funny that the new guys say theirs is too short. No one is ever content.

  1. It has been about 3 years since the maps were updated and support cannot/will not give us an answer when or EVEN IF the maps will ever be updated. Its is a great value for the price but if you live in an area with lots of development you will likely find many areas that are not on the map!

    [...]

  2. Stay away from Magellan all together. Bought the RoadMate 300 last Black Friday (Nov. 24, 2006). Pretty good unit for the price, had intermittent problems connecting to the satellite. Finally went. Called Magellan in August 2007, received a Return Authorization. They supposedly have a 14 day return policy. Well it is now almost November again and after numerous calls to Magellan still no GPS. They use outsourced phone representatives, so you can not be assured that they actually understand what you are saying and I have had a very hard time understanding them most times. After numerous promises that the replacement GPS is on the way and refusal to provide a tracking number as of today I got off the phone with them and started filing complaints with the BBB and the attorney general. Pay more and stay away from Magellan. They don't care about you once they have your $$$.

  3. Customer support is a joke, unless you speak Indian. You must also have about 3 hours free to hold while waiting to talk to someone you cant understand. One of the reviews I read told how to repair the wire that comes loose from the mother board. This also happened to mine. If it is that much of a problem they should repair the unit free because of a mfg. defect. They should modify the installation of this wire so that it works and does not come unglued. Stay away from Magellan. Extreamly poor service and manufacture.

  4. I bought this for my husband a year and a half ago and have had nothing but problems. He travels for a living and needs it to go to his sales appointments. It failed on him several times and was replaced (with a refurbished model) by Magellan and that has failed several times also. Very frustrating when you are 20 miles past your turnoff and don't know it because the GPS has frozen. We are currently looking for another to replace it and would not consider another Magellan, at any price.

  5. I called Magellan about updating the maps, and they said this unit is going to be discontinued and it is impossible to update it. I'd have to trade it in for a new one. So they wanted me to pay $200 after trading this unit in. If you call Magellan and are stubborn enough, they should be able to work out sending you a free Maestro (which they are for me). Cause I bought the Roadmate 300 like last November and they are telling me it is getting discontinued already?!?!

So BUYER BEWARE... SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME- DON'T BUY THIS simply because its getting discontinued and maps can't be upgraded from what I'm told! Spend an extra $60 from the used prices of this one and get a Maestro.. they seem to be great!

  1. All the other reviewers comments are valid, the software is difficult to use, the GPSr itself is difficult to use, and there are a lot of shutdowns and "outdoornav.exe" errors. The base map is extremely basic. The Nat Geo Topo! maps look great on here, but I couldn't find any other maps that worked. The Geocaching functions were great, I loved how you could display the hint if you wanted it but couldn't accidentally see it. I found the Triton to be extremely accurate and once I had it figured out I enjoyed using it, except for the shutdowns and errors. If it would work with a Mac, I might have stuck it out through the software upgrades, but Magellan doesn't have a good reputation for customer service and I can't afford two units, so back to the store it goes. I purchased the well regarded Garmin GPSMap 60CSx 2.6-Inch Mapping Handheld GPS, which is more expensive and you have to purchase additional maps. However, I love it and it is so easy to use. I've had it for a day and already can use it better than the Magellan.

  2. I agree with the other reviewers except I haven't experienced software crashes yet. Let me list the ways I hate thee, Triton 400:

Very poor customer support, nearly non-existent.

Odometer inaccurate as stated by others. It can be off by 20% or more. And yet, if you transfer tracks from the unit to the Vantage Point computer software, the mapping program will give accurate milage from the units own data! Go figure.

Button interface awkward. The buttons are small and response uncertain.

Software interface awkward. Which button do I use this time?

The internal map provided is very limited. At least you know which continent you are on.

How do I love thee, Triton 400?

rugged, water resistant, decent battery life, color, and great satellite acquisition.

  3. I probably wouldn't have purchased this unit, but I had an Explorist 500 that wasn't working right and even though it was out of warranty, Magellan gave me the Triton 400 as a replacement. I also got the National Geographic Weekend 3D map for my area. I got the map to load, although it was slow. It's a neat map topographically, but I use the Triton on my bicycle and the map doesn't list all the street names. Also, it was last updated in 1981 for portions of the covered area, so it's woefully out of date. However, I found on Magellan's website step by step instructions for loading the Mapsend TOPO 3D disks that I got with the Explorist. I tried that it it worked great. So I now have good street maps loaded and the unit seems to be working just fine. Picks up satellites quickly. I'm still waiting for the firmware update to allow you to turn tracks into trails but found that any trails I try to create still turn up as blue paths on the map. The firmware update promises to allow different options for creating these things, but it would have been nice if they got all this together before releasing the product. So, far, so good, though. I haven't experienced the lockup that's been talked about.

  4. Magellan came out with this series of Triton's with the great idea that they were the only GPS handheld manufacturer that could download USGS maps at 1:24,000 scale to a SD Disk in the unit (only models 400 and up). Their website states all the software they are compatible with. It has been a miserable failure. Thousands of these handhelds have been returned due to software and connectivity problems, which is a real shame. I personally have gone through four Triton's and have the same problem every time. It simply will not connect to my PC. The satellite signals work great even in my home and I can easily move about any region and can even take Magellan's software (called VantagePoint) and incorporate waypoints, trails, geocache's, etc. with no problem. But this is only on my PC. After literally hours (probably over ten) with support in the Philippines and Florida, I could not get anyone to resolve my connectivity problem. The computer recognized new hardware through my USB port, but when I tried to connect it, it got stuck on, "waiting to connect". My drivers were fine, so I knew it was not my PC.

This is a real tragedy for Magellan, as the idea to download USGS at a finer scale is fantastic, but it just isn't working out. The other features are fine - as good as Garmin or most manufacturers. However, I just cannot recommend this product after all the time, money and hassle I went through. Go with Garmin. You might have to settle for the pre-loaded map SD chips at a larger scale ratio, but at least you'll know where you are coming and going.

  5. I got the Triton 400 last week and am extremely happy with it. i ran the update through VantagePoint, installed National Geographic Maps and have been using the product ever since. its small enough to place in pocket for trail running which i do quite frequently. I also have a bike mount for my mountain bike. i upload all my trails back to National Geographic and share with one other avid mountain biker. with the National Geographic maps, you can really see where you are and where you are going. Great details and this product is a great deal.

  1. I bought this GPS Magellan Roadmate 800 in June 2006 for $600 and in next 6 months the battery stopped working and unit is only works if my car is running and I am able to charge the battery, but it don't operate the unit.I called magellan ant they told me that it will cost me $130 to fix this, so I decided not to send it to them. Now when I turn it on in my car, it takes around 45 minutes for this unit to find the GPS location and by the time you already reach some where and lost, I take mapquest directions along with this. I will never but any Magellan GPS in future.

  2. Maps were not perfect. I needed European maps and was appaled at the price tag of dowload. It would be cheaper to buy a new device with European maps than downloading them. Works well mostly but can freeze if you press a few commands in a row. Good screen and battery life. I never used the storage capacity for pictures or music.

  4. Had to give a rating so gave it 1 star - would have preferred to leave it at 0. The only thing worse than their product is their customer service. You won't be able to talk with anyone in the US. The 800 number is direct to India. They will repeatedly lie to you - and you never get to talk with the same person or a supervisor - they'll tell you a supervisor will call you back - don't wait for the call. You can call their corporate headquarters in the US - the only problem is that nobody is there. Steer clear - look at a different manufacturer - anyone EXCEPT magellan.

  5. I just started a new job as a Construction Project Manager and with my new job I have to travel from site to site at different locations.

When people try to give directions to their location, I just ask them to give me the physical address and I will be there and I haven't been lost yet.
