- Okay, I couldn't resist the completely politically incorrect review title, but I promise, it's the last time I'll go there.
I'm a new transplant to the myriad highways and byways of Metro Atlanta, and simply put, the Tom Tom GO 700 has been absolutely amazing in terms of getting me around town, routing me through, over and around traffic snarls and getting me to unfamiliar destinations on time and without backtracking! The user interface is blissfully easy, and it even links to your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to access real-time traffic information, so you can avoid those rush-hour parking sessions at Spaghetti Junction. The unit allows you to preload your destinations so that when you're on the road you can literally just touch the screen to navigate from stop to stop, and the whole thing connects to your computer using the included USB cable and it charges the battery AND updates it's maps and points of interest as required (some updates are at additional cost). Finally, you can also purchase additional voices for the turn-by- turn directions (did I mention that it TALKS TO YOU and tells you when to turn? Well, it does! Amazing, right?), including people like John Cleese and other notables. I personally selected a low, throaty, sexy Brit babe - I figure that if I have to ride in traffic, I might as well get a chuckle out of it. Miss Brit says things like "There's a toll road coming up - do you need a hand getting your change out of your pocket?" and "You've reached your destination - but don't stop just yet..."
In short, the Tom Tom GO 700, at this price, is a luxury gadget that will prove to be invaluable to you if you spend a lot of time behind the wheel and don't like sitting in traffic. I'm going to buy another one for my wife!
- The only things that kept me from rating this Tom Tom a 5 star is the fact that it had to be reset a couple of times and sometimes it lags for several minutes to find a signal. Having said that I have no other complaints. I made my way through some pretty tight spots where i don't know what i would have done without it. It's my first gps so i can't compare it to others but this does all i need and more. I was a little hesitant about buying a reconditioned unit but It came in looking brand new with everything working and ready to go. fears quelled.
- Overall this product is great. The many features that it offers makes this well worth the money. It is easy to navigate to a location as well as through the on screen prompts.
The only draw back to this unit being a refurb is that while it is completely gone through it does not have updated software loaded. I had to go to two different locations, TomTom home page and TomTom Home, in order to get the current versions for this model. While it is not difficult to do it is frustrating. Also, there is a newer version of the mapping software that they offer for $99. This should already have been loaded as well.
Overall, it is worth the money and the time to download the updates.
- I have owned this unit for well over a year. Since I am "directionally challenged" to put it mildly, I now have the freedom to get in the car & go - without fear of getting lost. No more confusing directions from friends & family - Jane takes me where ever I want to go. My son is moving to Houston & we took the Go with us on an apartment hunting trip. We were able to find locations of complexes, places to eat, movie theaters & gas stations without a hitch. Anyone who gets lost on a regular basis should have one of these. Only one caveat - occasionally (three times since I've owned it) locks up when downloading updates. There is a tiny opening in the bottom of the unit - insert a paper clip & the unit reboots - problem solved!
- Builtin microphone [NOT} Mounting brackett with microphone [AGAIN NOT] up to date map no but you can buy it [WHAT] yes that is tomtom respons ! This is purchesed from Amazon

4 comments about Cobra GPS 1000 DLX 4MB Global Positioning System with Rand McNally StreetFinder Software.
- I rated it two stars for the price. There was a reason for the recent (Feb 2005) huge rebate. I have several GPS units and this is NOT one of the better ones. I brought it because it was cheap for a GPS unit and a great starter unit for my teenagers. The serial PC interface method is difficult to configure when using XP. MS XP does not auto detect this device. However, I brought a serial to USB adapter at Best Buy and this seems to work well. XP will auto detect the USB port (make sure unit is on) and load the required driver, via internet. However, you will have to type in the correct COM port each time you connect to the GPS. The Rand McNally Street Finder software is overrated and overpriced. The software is not user friendly and will take some time to get use to. Maps are outdated (4-5 years old). There are no upgrades/updates available at the time of this writing. The software maps downloaded to the handheld is inaccurate (current position indicator does not match the mapping) when using max zooms on the GPS unit. This can be annoying when using the GPS for driving guidance. If you use this GPS for traveling across the States, you will have to download every city you plan to travel through, plan on buying a large memory card. However, you can use the GPS unit with your laptop for traveling. Software mapping using a laptop computer is decent and appears to be accurate. The battery/memory card cover is secure via screw method for water tightness but very difficult to open and close on a regular basis. This can be annoying when changing the batteries every 8 -12 hours. I recommend using rechargeable batteries, they seems to last longer than alkalines. Furthermore, neither the unit nor the software offers any kind of voice navigation; this can be very dangerous if you depend on this GPS handheld to guide you through unfamiliar territory. Bottom line: At this price, this is a good unit for basic general driving information (MPH, speed, location, heading, ETA, max speed, trip odometer, average speed, etc.) This can also be a great starter GPS unit for a Boy Scout or someone who enjoys hiking (unit is water tight). My recommendation is to accept this unit as a gift and invest your money elsewhere.
- I just recently purchased the Cobra GPS1000DLX and am extremely disappointed.
Pros: Hardware - The unit is compact (about the size of an average PDA)
Cons: Software (Both on the Unit and included software)
Hardware - Serial (RS232) interface
All I can say about the software on the unit is that it's functional. Other then that it will take awhile to get used to and is not very user friendly.
As for the included Rand McNally Street Finder software, it is obvious that this software was written around 1999 and has had no updates. Cobra/Rand are really trying to squeeze there pennies out of it as long as they can. Just trying to install the software on a computer with XP can be a challenge I've found.
*Warning* Windows XP SP2 will sometimes wipe out a file that this software requires to install. Let me save you some time, it's not listed as a known problem on there website, you have to call Rand McNally for the solution. (That's all Cobra will tell you to do)
*Recommendation - Bring some coffee and donuts with you before trying to install. Once the CD is inserted and the install program started, it took an average of 5 minutes before the pre-install program was done and the actual install program started.
Once the software is installed, it looks more at home on a Windows 98 machine and functions just as it looks. After creating a map and trying to download it the GPS unit it told me it needed the "Data" CD. (*Note - This seems more like something that should be part of the initial install) Let's just say that it also took me a little while to figure out that it wanted it in the first CD drive on my system, not the drive I used to install it. After getting the Disc in the right drive it started coping the files it needed (There was enough time for another coffee break). Once the transfer between the software the GPS unit began, I noticed the progress bar was barely moving (Yet another coffee break) so I used that time to reflect on the benefits of USB vs Serial and why Serial is OUTDATED for consumer products.
Once completed with that task I created a Route between two points. The software traced my route completely inaccurately (Lets just say my starting point was approx 15+ meters from the actual route, not just one point but the whole route)
This is good unit for a teenager or young camper or as a gift. Other then that, I recommend getting one of the other GPS units out there.
- Really easy to use but sophisticated at the same time.
Very accurate and very reliable. I don't know how many times I've dropped it and it's still going!!!
All my friends on my bike team have one and they ALL love it! I would never buy anything else!
I use mine in the car, on my bike and even when I'm hiking!
- Good durable GPS for hiking, boating, and stuff like that. Not so good for the road, frequent battery changes are a pain too. I have never tried connecting the GPS to a laptop, but I feel that it would be good for navigating. Some people don't like the lack of vocal instructions, but I really like not having a backseat driver.

5 comments about Magellan Auto Navigation ROADMATE 700 GPS Receiver System - 980652-03.
- I have had this unit for about 2 years or so, if I can remember correctly, and it was purchased new. At first things went well, except for what I thought was an atrocious response to delivering updated maps.
What has followed since has been anything but inspirational, in my opinion, about the unit I purchased new. I recently updated to map 4.26, but then found that a new map might be available within the next month. Any chance of gettin g my money back? No.
And now, my unit has no sound. The thing works but there's no voice prompts. It started having some problems and then the sound all but quit. It's not the speakers but something I understand, with the soldering. I now discover that there have been a number of reports detailing the same kind of hardware failure.
I spent $1,000 for this unit. I have a DVD player that costs l;ess than a hundred bucks and it doesn't have a soldering problem. I still have VHS players.... my father has electronics gear from the 1980s that doesn't have any problem like this. In my opinion, this is something that must stem from shoddy workmanship. In no way is this normal wear and tear. The life of this unit should not be having its last legs at this time.
Any positive reviews on how the unit operates in going from point A to point B are moot when you have spent this kind of money on a unit that now has no sound.
Now, I'm having problems where the 700 simply cuts off. I'll be driving to a location and the slightest bump may cause the unit to shut off. The cord is plugged into the lighter, and still glows green to show power. Maybe its the plug into the unit, or maybe the clip that attaches to the back has loosened. Whatever it is, the unit has failed miserably.
If you still decide to purchase it, I suggest you get some kind of extended warranty that will replace with another new unit.
- This is a great unit for the price. I've used it locally and on several business trips and it's gotten me from point A to B with no problems. I won't leave home with out it now, money well spent.
- I have had this unit for about a year now. It has made two errors in that entire time. I use it primarily for business and I find residences in subdivisions at night on the first pass. I think it is an excellent device and give it my highest rating.
- I bought my Magellan about a 1 ½ years ago, initially it worked great. Eventually it could no do a locate so I called the help center in (India) they were no help what so ever all they wanted is to have me send it back and pay the standard $175.00 fee to fix it. Eventually it started working again hummm weird, now the sound goes out I keep doing the diagnostic check and it will work and with in 5 minuets it will be out and you have to do it over and over again and now they want another $175.00 just to look at it sounds pretty fishy too me. My sister has one as well hers went out right at the one year mark and they again want to charge $175.00. Sounds like they have a lack of customer satisfaction skills. When it works it works great but once the problems start they don't stop you will certainly spend more fixing it than you pay for it.
- hello,
i wantto talk about 4 different points.
1. be ready to pay more on updating maps which are already at least 1 year old.
2. you might experience hardware problem like loosing sound. i can get the sound by doing configuration/diagnostic/audio test. if i try to change the sound level, i loose it all.
3. i wish it has internal battery so i can carry it around.
4. repeat the last comment is somethign you should have in any kind of gps. it is great if you miss something or if you did not understant what was told.
