  1. I could never get topo maps to download to the unit. I was on the phone with Busnell for over an hour and they were suppose to call me back. Never did. I also learned that you can only download a very small area at a time. So I bought a Garmin Colorado 400T instead. It has the entire USA topo maps pre-loaded!!

  1. I've had this product since Dec. 2006 (paid $225 for it at the time). It has worked great: got me where I needed to go, provided me with the nearest Taco Bells, suggested alternate routes when it detects that I'm stuck in traffic, and etc.

However, it only comes with a one year warranty. Low and behold, after 14 months of service (not much since I don't drive everyday and only use it for the occasional trip), it decided to die on me this month. I can send it back to Magellan for repair but that'll cost more than a new GPS. I don't think I'll go Magellan again.

  2. I've owned this GPS for almost a year, My unit takes about 7 minutes to connect to the satalite and get a location fix, after its initially turned on. The Points of Interest database is useless. It barely has anything in it compared to most other gps units (2 million vs. 6 million). 2 million may sound like alot, but its not, its really only like 20% of stores/gas stations/ resteraunts/ etc. Magellan just sent me an email about a map, software, and points of interest update, that they just released. They charge $79.99 for the update. Great way to retain customers Magellan, charge them for updates! The battery on the Roadmate is trash. The unit does not have an off mode, only hibernate, which consistantly drains the battery dead, if left "off" for more than a few days. So basically the unit must remain plugged in constantly like it has no battery at all. The user interface is poorly thought out. If for instance I want to store a new location then navigate to it. I must store the location and name it, then navigate all the way back to the home screen (by pushing "X" five times. Then all the back to the save points list, then I have to locate my new point I just saved on a long list that only shows about 8 points per screen, so you have to scroll down and find it. It should be just be you punch in an address and click navigate, but its not. Oh and another minor anoyance with the roadmate, is that you cannot see the map and your speed at the same time, on the same display. You have to click the top bar to see your speed. Then hit "X" to get back to you map. Also zooming in and out is excruciatingly slow.

  3. I got this GPS as a present about a year and a half ago. It is not the best GPS you will find, but if you want a small, inexpensive unit, this is a good product to look at for the price. Here are some pros and cons:

    Pros:
    1. Reliability
The unit will get you from point A to point B. I have seen it re-route after a wrong turn and it will usually (eventually) find an alternate route that is suitable.

    2. Ease of use
The unit is very easy to use, and the interface is pretty good. I just bought a Garmin and the huge disadvantage to that unit is that I cannot search locations by zip code. With this unit, you can search by zip or by city name. I also like the "Home" button right on the main menu. Touch the button it will route to your home without having to go through multiple menus. Also, it has many POIs and they are easy to use.

    3. Routing options
Another nice feature is the routing options you are presented with every time you enter an address. Before it plans the route you can pick "Shortest Time", "Shortest Distance", "Most use of freeways", or "Least use of freeways". This is especially nice when driving home in rush hour traffic when you want to avoid the highways, or making long trips where you want to use all freeways. Also, you can click "Avoid toll roads" for any of these options, which is great is you don't have an EZ Pass-type device.

    Cons:
    1. Routing & maps
The unit has always gotten me to where I need to go, but sometimes it doesn't calculate the fastest route. Also, Magellan doesn't update maps very often so sometimes you might run into a situation where a road has changed and the map is not updated. Another con to this is that the unit does not save your favorite route to stored locations.

    2. Not many extra features
The unit is basically for GPS only. It doesn't have any of the fancy features the GPS units have now, such as Bluetooth, MP3 players, etc. It is meant to be used as a GPS only. It also does not have text-to-speech capabilities, meaning it will not announce road names, but instead say "turn left in 1 mile."

All in all, this is a good little GPS unit for someone who just need to get where they are going. There are no flashy features in it, but it gets you to where you need to go. I especially like being able to touch the one button during a route and look at all the turns for the route from start to finish. The routing is pretty good and the time estimates are almost always dead on. It's not bad for a first GPS.

  4. We've had this GPS for over a year now, and it has worked quite well. We used it on our move from New York to Texas and it held a signal the whole trip which was what we hoped for. I've been using it in our new city and its predominantly been a champ. This area has a number of new constructions so the maps seem outdated (mainly missing developments) and it appears you can't update them. It seems to spontaneously reset when I hit one particular spot downtown- its annoying, but at least I know exactly when its going to happen so I can look at my next few turns before that happens.
Overall, this is a great little unit if you're new in town and want a GPS to help you get where you need to go until you know how to get there on your own.

I WILL ALWAYS USE MY MAGELLAN ROADMATE.

  1. we did have a problem with our product. but when we called the 1800# we got very courtious answers and no problems they came to our home and picked up our idem with no charge to us and we had a replacement in three days. its great .........

  2. 1. I have owned a Rider for more than 18 months.
    2. The first one I had, the dock broke in Texas while I was riding Route 66.
    3. I called TomTom from Texas (I live in Calif) and asked them to FedEx a new one.
    They said no can do.
    4. Once home, TomTom sent me a new Dock, but... it took them 1 month to get it to me.
    5. After a while I started to notice that the Rider was not charging while in the dock and on my bike.
    6. They asked me to send them my Rider back with all the accessories.
    7. Then after 4 weeks, they sent me a new Rider, with no charger and no accessories.
    8. The asked me to send it back.
    8. After another 4 weeks, they sent me another.... new Rider... with all the accessories.
    9. The dock didn't charge.
    10. After another week, they sent me a new dock. It works.

There are known issues with the docks and charging, but TomTom won't admit it.
It's manufacturering issue. I'll let you guess where they are made.

The Tom Tom rider is good, easy to use. But if anything goes wrong, you'll be waiting many weeks for a replacement.
Ad of course the wait time on the phone, plan on an hour with each call.

I probably would NOT buy another one.

  3. The TomTom Rider 2 is too expensive, but essentially a good product.
    - Screen is visible in sunshine
    - Menus are easily accessible, you don't need to study the manual to work the box
    - Navigation quality is good
    - RAM mount works fine (Ducati 1098 - mount on steering damper)

The only negative is the price. In terms of value for money, this is not the product you'd be looking for. Yes, RAM mount works fine on all bikes, but there is nothing magic about it. Yes, the navigation quality is good, and the screen is well visible. But again, is that worth 500 bucks?

I suppose it's a niche market and that makes it worth it.

  4. excellent 99% of time ,we used on a 4400 mile trip but we were disapointed
in the points of interest feature it did not even list Yellowstone Nat Park. Also it did not have gas stations listed unless it was Chevron or Texaco.

  5. I bought a Tomtom Rider 2 at the end of May. It took a week and a half to receive it after they sat on my money for a week. I had the unit for less than 48 hours before it died. It left me stranded in a strange city. When I finally got to my destination, the screen had gone blank and I could not boot it up. I called Tomtom Support and they told me to do a hard boot. I did this with no success. They then told me to charge it for at least 4 hours. I did this and still no screen. They finally gave me a RMA and had me send it back. Because I was on vacation, I did not have a chance to send it back right away. If I knew then what I know now I would have sent that unit back for a refund right away. You only have 14 days to send it back.
After about three weeks after I had sent it back, I received a new one in the mail. It was missing the SIM card, I waited another week to get that. I finally had it back only to have it do the same thing. This time it not only did it die, but it told me to turn into a ditch before it died. It had me going down roads that I know would not take me to where I wanted to go. The bluetooth also died before the screen went. It is a total failed unit. I called them and told them that I just wanted my money back. They told me that that was not possible because I had not sent it in within the 14 days refund period. I told them that I had done everything they said to do, but that doesn't seem to matter. I am so frustrated with Tomtom. For the money that I spent on this, I should not have to be sending it back time and time again. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! If you do, just remember that you only have 14 days to return it if it is not working.

  1. I bought this for 599.00 and it works fine but manufacturing quality is really bad. Insertion pin for AC/DC adapter completely fell apart into pieces. This happened after a month of usage. It can not be even fixed.

  2. I bought this GPS Magellan Roadmate 800 in June 2006 for $600 and in next 6 months the battery stopped working and unit is only works if my car is running and I am able to charge the battery, but it don't operate the unit.I called magellan ant they told me that it will cost me $130 to fix this, so I decided not to send it to them. Now when I turn it on in my car, it takes around 45 minutes for this unit to find the GPS location and by the time you already reach some where and lost, I take mapquest directions along with this. I will never but any Magellan GPS in future.

  3. Maps were not perfect. I needed European maps and was appaled at the price tag of dowload. It would be cheaper to buy a new device with European maps than downloading them. Works well mostly but can freeze if you press a few commands in a row. Good screen and battery life. I never used the storage capacity for pictures or music.

  5. Had to give a rating so gave it 1 star - would have preferred to leave it at 0. The only thing worse than their product is their customer service. You won't be able to talk with anyone in the US. The 800 number is direct to India. They will repeatedly lie to you - and you never get to talk with the same person or a supervisor - they'll tell you a supervisor will call you back - don't wait for the call. You can call their corporate headquarters in the US - the only problem is that nobody is there. Steer clear - look at a different manufacturer - anyone EXCEPT magellan.

  1. A well made, competitively price GPS unit.

This unit is the same as the 2100 except that the 2120 has all the USA states (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) and Canada. It comes with car charger and your choice of either windshield suction cup or dash-top adhesive disc for displaying your unit.

What is MISSING in this particular product (and included as standard features on the 5100 and 7100 series) are...

    1.)A home charging unit
2.)No instruction booklet or DVD. You have to go online to download a PDF file and go from there.
3.)Neither accessory card is included; the Traffic Activation Service* and Zagat POI (points of interest) must be bought separately.

    the good...

1.)the unit is well sized; my initial concern was that it was small, but once on the windshield it was big enough to easily read without blocking your vision.

2.)easy to program routes with the ability to put in various way points in between your start and finish. (however, see con: 1.) below)

3.)if you 'save' your destinations, way points, etc., you have the ability to 'rename' them; this may not sound like a big deal but you might find it more helpful to have the I-81 north of Harrisburg PA named as such (for ease of recall at a later date) than named the 'Veterans Highway' with no indication where it is.

4.)I liked the snap in/out device that actually holds the GPS; this made the unit easy to put up and take down if you didn't want to leave the unit in your car while unattended.

5.)3D viewing is available for all usages as are voice directions; larger, more detailed maps are used in larger intersections, cloverleafs etc.

6.)the level of luminescence is variable for daytime/nighttime driving; a very nice feature as the daytime brightness is extremely bright at night.

7.)There is a toll free phone number for customer support; I had a question about my unit and called 'support', after a couple redirects from the automated answering machine I was connected to a 'real' person...impressive.

8.)once you register your unit online, any updates that are available for downloaded may be added to your unit through a computer connection.

    the cons:

1.a)because there was no manual with this unit, learning to program this unit (although in hindsight, this was not particularly difficult) was more complicated that it should have been.

1.b)in route planning, I found the unit invariably would find a somewhat different way to get from point A to point B than I'd expected. It would get me to my destination, but just by a different (and sometimes more circuitous) route.

1.c)if you are following a preprogrammed route on this unit and you miss hitting a waypoint on your route, the unit will continually try to turn you around to 'hit' the waypoint (or until you delete this waypoint). A somewhat annoying feature. I eventually found it much more effective to put in short routes, rather than longer routes with multiple waypoints.

2.)the accessory cards (Traffic* and Zagat's POI) are only useful in selected major centers.

3.)the connector cord to the unit from the cigarette lighter charger went straight into the bottom of the unit. This means you need to have 2 or 3 inches of space between your unit and the dash top or else you could possibly kink the charger cord. Motorola makes a right angle adapter (SKN6182)that solves this problem.

4.)the unit's battery (when used without charger cord) only lasted about 4 hours.

5.)the computerized voice had an unpleasant tinny pitch to it and quickly became VERY annoying; fortunately, it can be turned off.

    Conclusions:
1.)A reasonably priced, basic GPS that works well.
2.)It is very useful in finding and directing you to particular spots once you are in the general area, e.g. a specific address, a certain restaurant, an ATM or gas station etc.
3.)I found it less useful on planning long trips as it tended to suggest routes and turnoffs that were less than optimal for my chosen trip.

    Overall...4 1/2 Stars

*Also, please note that if you plan to use the Traffic Activation Service you must use the in-car charger cord as it acts an the antenna to receive traffic information for both the 2100 and 2120 units.

    Addendum: April 28/08
A new software version 1.2 has been released and is available for download from the Navigon website for registered owners of the 2100, 5100 and 7100 series. Hopefully this new software will improve the route selection process used by the GPS and make its suggestions more useful.

  2. I purchased the Navigon Mobile Navigator 5 in Germany for use in Italy. I wanted a TomTom but they were out, so I purchased Navigon. What a waste. Not user-friendly at all--have to continually refer to manual for the simplest things as it just doesn't make sense.

Had to call customer service in the USA just to get it to work (had to transfer an executable file...why do I have to do that?) I could understand it telling me to "turn right" when there is no road--because maybe that's what the Italian maps have told it. But no one else with different brands around here are having the same problem (TomTom and Garmin).

I will never waste my money again with Navigon.

  3. I ordered my product over a month ago and when I received it it was broken. The screen only turned white. I sent it in for repairs, and I still have yet to get it back; therefore, I still have no idea how well this products works.

  4. Works great! I had a tomtom before but broke it(my Fault). I like this gps a little better. Looks better and has 3d mode. Worth the money.

  1. I have grown to like this little unit quite a bit, but I have discovered that I made a bad assumption when I bought it. When I saw that the maps were on SD cards, I figured I would just be able to buy maps for other regions when I needed them. Not so, it turns out. I actually called Mio tech support to see where I could buy a map of Canada for my next trip to Toronto, and I was told that "foreign" maps won't work in the US units. The telephone rep had been pretty polite up to that point, but when I said I certainly wouldn't by a a Mio in the future, because they aren't much use to folks who need to travel to Canada, she got kind of snippy. She said "Well, that's your choice," and then added "You can buy a separate Mio Canadian unit."

Yeah... or I could just buy a GPS that lets me install new maps.

Steer clear of this one folks. It's not worth the "savings."

  2. This GPS is not the flashiest but it will do what you need. I uploaded software from GPS club website and now have windows media player, word pad, mp3 player and other neat software on this 130 dollar GPS. It came with 1GB of US maps, I wiped out all but 3 maps for my area of America and then loaded up some songs and an AVI movie that i "got" off the internet or use it as a 1 gb storage device. I can watch movies or listen to music or find my way. not too many units will do this for 130 bucks.

  3. I bought my Mio about 6 months ago. It's a great little gps overall. My only complaint is that it can take FOREVER to find a satellite signal. By forever, I mean, on a bad day, 3 to 5 minutes. On a good day, less than a minute. I'm not sure what causes the delay - doesn't seem to be weather, terrain, or buildings. I love that there is no service to purchase but once you have the map, it's not going to get updated on its own. Since San Antonio is growing at an unbelievable pace, I have had quite a few unknown addresses pop up on me but I'm a Realtor so I guess I'll probably have that problem more than average. As far as how user friendly it is - it's great. Very easy to program, and it's got a lot of different options on how to view your map. Best of all, it's portable which means if you find yourself in a strange city, you can carry it around with you. (If you do this, keep in mind that it only works when you're moving - so if you stop, it's going to lose you! This also applies to geocaching for those of you who know what that is.) It also came in handy when we went to Puerto Rico last fall!
Overall this is a great gps and I would recommend it.

  4. This is a nicely made unit and works fairly well. I found that it was not very intuitive to use. It also did not follow deviations from the route very well. At times instead of recalculating the route it just keeps trying to get you back to where you left the route. I had to turn it over to my 10 year old granddaughter to figure it out. She caught on fairly quick but Grandpa was a bit slow to pick it up.

  5. Excellant product.. very reliable. will definately take u to the destination even if u r lost somewhere. can trust it completely.Recalculates preet fast.

Drawbacks: Volumne is low. If u are listening to music or windows are open; u can barely hear what GPS says. It doesn't speak out street name where u wanna take turn or exit, so in the beginning things might be difficult. It discharges preety fast, hence need to keep it charging while driving.
