  1. The product is amazing and i am using it now. But i bought it from Crutchfield and not amazon. I placed the order on amazon as they had it in stock and i also opted for expedited shipping. This was done on a Thursday and i expected it to arrive to me by the week after that wednesday. I hadn't heard anything from them until tuesday evening and so i just thought of calling them to check what the status of the order was and there i get a answer saying that THE ITEM IS NOT IN STOCK and we are waiting on it to come in stock. I was like why did you guys not think of informing me by email or phone that this was the case. So the guy said I DON'T KNOW AND WE WERE JUST GOING TO WAIT UNTIL WE GOT IT AND SEND IT TO YOU WHENEVER WE GOT IT. Jesus christ!!! I WOULD NEVER TRUST AMAZON ON ITS WORDS OF "IN STOCK" AND DELIVERY TIMES.

Sorry but my first time shopping at amazon and this is what i get....nah i ain't shopping here again dude...i shopped at crutchfield and i absolutely loved their response and i ordered it on a wednesday and i got it on friday.....NO CHARGE FOR A TWO DAY DELIVERY TOO....cudn't get any better!!!

  2. The GPS was delivered in a timely matter, I'm fairly happy with the unit, although didn't have some of the potions I was expecting

  3. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!! THERE IS NO SIGNAL AT ALL!!! AND U RISK "RESTOCKING" FEE AS WELL.

  4. Well satisfied with the instrument so far EXCEPT that though the voiced turns are geographically correct the naming of NUMBERED streets is at times way off. E.g. a left turn onto 84th street might be VOICED as a left turn onto 144th street. Can be confusing if one is completely unfamiliar with the area in play.
Have asked the company for their comment but received no reply.

  5. I had been pricing gps's on Amazon with text-to-speach in which the actual street name was announced. I came across this Harmon Kardon model with a very reasonable price point. The delivery was prompt and right on the money. As per the instructions I charged up the battery, opened the locking device outside, and received the gps signal. I entered a destination and was on my way. The gps worked like a charm with turns and actual street names being announced. The second time I tried it the gps read waiting for gps signal. I'm still waiting. The so-called manual or operator's guide that comes with the gps has only the basic start up instrictions. It is vague and does not supply enough enfo. I could not find a support site for Harmon Kardon on the web. I'm extremely dissapointed in this product and hope that Amazon investigates these short comings for me. Amazon once again has backed up their return policy and has aloud me to return the gps for a full refund.

  1. Great to have 2 cool gadgets in one item. I run the XM directly into my 300 Watt amp under the seat of my 57 Bel Air, with an add-on 150 amp subwoofer. Cool music and I didn't have to mess with my dashboard on the classic car.

  2. I purchased this GPS device as a Christmas present for my wife who is a realator and frequently maps several showings for a specified client. She is not usually a person who accepts new technology when offered and tends to place such items on the top shelf of the closet. That was not the case with this particular gift; as usual, she shied away of using it until it was programmed for her and placed on the dash of her vehicle for an afternoons showings.
The result, and only drawback, after that afternoon isthat I can't fetch this from the top shelf of the closet and use it at my whim. She drives three different vehicles, and with deft hands moves this device with her.

  3. GPS is awesome Power cord sucks...i am on my third power cord and they are $45 bucks each. the other pain is that the speaker is in the power cord so if you want to plus it in your center storage area you can hear it. other then that it is pretty nice!!!

  4. I purchased this product about two years ago and need another one for a new car. This is an excellent product and I'm sorry Garmin has decided not to manufacture any more. the replacement Garmin is now making costs $1000 more.

  5. If you buy this like I did, plan on the expense of map downloading and replacing the power source in about one year.

  1. I currently have the Mag 700. I take it with me when I fly to other states. My problem is that I'm not familiar with the streets in these other states. So when (not if, but when!) the 700 glitches out, I'm completely lost. And forget calling tech serv. The line goes directly to India...

Is there anyone out there who flys to other states and takes their gps for use in their rental cars? I've been considering the Mag. roadmate 1200 and a Garmin model. Can you recommend a Mag. model or other brand that's more dependable? I live in Calif. and don't have a problem using the Mag. here. I think it's a matter of my being more confident about finding my way if the gps glitches out when I'm close to my home base. Whereas, when I travel, I don't know anyone to call or where I'm going!! Any recommendations from fellow travelers would be appreciated.

  2. I've had the StreetPilot i2 for 2 years now and when I saw the Magellan Roadmate 1200 on sale, the price was so good I could not pass it up.

The Magellan Roadmate 1200 was a big jump up from the Garmin StreetPilot i2. The Magellan had a full 3.5" color touch screen where the Garmin had only a 1.7 black and white non-touch screen with a scroll button.

The Magellan is very thin and sleek. The screen is very nice as well. The menus are very well laid out. And the address input works great. It asks you for either a zip code, nearby or city. This is nicer than Garmin, which wasn't fun on the i2's selector wheel. You had to scroll through the list with the selector wheel and spell it out. My wife hated it.

But, there were several things about the Magellan that I didn't like:

    1. Battery life - I hate using power adapters in cars. I hate the sight of hanging wires. My old Gamin could use AA batteries. I had a charger and always keep a set of batteries ready to go. The Magellan has a very weak internal battery that only gives you two hours at best. On a set of AA batteries I could power my Gamin for a week.

    2. Navigation prompts - Yuck. This was the death knell. I could not stand the turn prompts. On the Garmin, the unit would announce an oncoming turn just like the Magellan. Problem is, when you got to your turn, the Magellan sounds a tone prompt, "ding!". With the Garmin, the ladies voice announces, "turn right", which just seems more natural. Not a huge deal for some, but for me it was, as I don't like to watch the screen and count heavily on voice prompts.

Other than those two things, which were huge for me, it's a decent unit.

  3. MAGELLAN RoadMate 1200 3.5-Inch Auto Navigation

I bought this a few weeks ago and am very pleased with it. Easy to operate, reliable, useful for anyone planning a trip.

  4. I've had my Magellan Roadmate 1200 since February. It worked great at first and we had bought it as a 2nd navigation system for our two car/truck move from Florida to Indiana. Two days before the move the system gets stuck in an endless back and forth between two screens (settings), but will not let me access the actual navigation. After a long time on hold with tech support we send it in and end up using radios for our move in April.

About 2 weeks after mailing it to Texas we received a new system (at least we believe it was new due to the screen protector on the device, there was NO letter or explanation or ANYTHING with the package, just a GPS)....

Now, another 2 weeks later, it will not turn on. We were using it (with the car charger plugged in), made a stop and turned it off. When we returned to the car and tried to use it again it would not work and hasn't since, despite several tries to charge it at home, pressing the reset button etc. So it will be another call to tech support, this time not so pleasant.

I highly recommend to get a TomTom, which we have had for over a year and never had a problem with (we only went for the Magellan due to price)!

  5. This device is so much of a hassle that I actually leave it in my car overnight with the hopes that somebody will steal it so I have a reason to replace it with a tom tom or garmen unit.

I am not a beta tester. If you believe what other reviewers say, this was rushed for black Friday, but people, I purchased this in May 2008. I guess its worth it to this company that continues to offer a sub $150 unit on the market not caring that they lost a customer for life.

I have the same problems other reviewers have with the unit locking up, demanding me to insert the sd card when its in the slot, giving roundabout false directions with the 'shortest route' option. And whats up with that exit POI error?

Maybe if they ever have a firmware update it may be worth the money I wasted but me, I'm sticking to my paper maps just to be on the safe side.

  1. This does not appear to be working correctly. My boss put in several addresses, even a couple within a block of where he was going, and it could not find the location. I would really like to return it for a credit.

  2. By far the one of the best GPS around. Easy to use, small, and clear. Enjoy!

  3. this was very hard to use, the seller was great and refunded my money upon its return

  4. I consider myself quite capable when it comes to electronics, however I could not figure this one out at all. The dvd was not helpful and kept me on the computer downloading useless garb for about an hour, and the tutorial at the beginning of the manual couldn't be used without downloading all sorts of maps...which apparently costs money. I talked to the Garmin people and they said that this product has been updated due to complaints and misconceptions. It only has enough memory to download 3 states worth of data...so forget about taking it on a cross country trip. Also, because you have to download the maps before you go anywhere you have to know where you're going.
I purchased this product to make my life easier, but it's quickly become the biggest hassle of my day!
If I could do it again I'd spent the extra money up front and get a higher quality one. I have a friend with the touch screen and she swears by it. Make sure you really do your research before buying a GPS.

  5. I love this Nav with all of the features and PC interface. But the screen is too small for me to see so I had to give it to my son.

  1. After some research I had to decide between a few basic units, TomTom one 3rd edition and alike and the ViaMichelin. I purchased the X-930 because it seemed to be a fairly simple to use unit with all I was looking for at a great price. I travel to Southern Europe pretty often, and I know ViaMichelin has great maps and updates. After using the X-930 for sometime it was clear that the 2,006 US maps are waaaaay too old. Then I learnt there are no updates available for US maps. OK, customer support cannot say when, if ever, these updates will be available. Next, I consider buying the European maps for a trip in the near future. Customer support says those maps WILL NOT WORK if the unit was purchased in the US. Long silence on my side of the line ends up with the customer support representative saying something like 'some people make those maps work with the unit, but ViaMichelin does not support that'. OK, that IS weird. Anyway, I will probably get rid of the unit as I cannot be hoping ViaMichelin will soon solve these issues. My vision of the company is not half as good as it used to be. I just do not understand how a company like ViaMichelin SELLS A GPS THAT IS GOING TO WORK ONLY IN THE US, WITH MAPS NOT UPDATED FOR TWO YEARS, AND THAT DOES NOT SUPPORT MAPS FROM EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. This is a joke of a deal.

  2. ViaMichelin is exiting the US GPS market and will not support updates to the old 2005 maps. I heard this right from the horse's mouth. The unit I own didn't even recognize portions of the PA Turnpike which has been in existence for over 50 years.

  3. This unit is essentially a paperweight. The maps are ridiculously old and there is no chance of getting updated versions, since ViaMichelin is no longer making GPS units. They have also turned a deaf ear to the existing customers who are begging for new maps. If you call customer service, they will outright LIE and say that new maps are coming soon, but don't believe it. The smart money is on anything but a ViaMichelin.

  4. I purchased the X930 for my wife. The con they list is probably the most important fact they can mention. It is difficult to the point of impossible (occasionally) to input and find locations. It would appear from the product's website that they have discontinued the product and even the website is somewhat difficult to get around. My friend has a Garmin and I recommend their product over this one with no reservations. I am unimpressed with the lacking userfriendliness of this product and do not recommend it's purchase despite it's low price tag.

  5. Really sorry I bought this one. Maps are old, can't locate my house on it and I've lived here 5 years. Little to no support from the company. It appears their main market in Europe. Map updates are not available. Find a unit that allows you to update your maps from the internet. I am sure there are better units available.

  1. Very easy to use and understand. Never have used a car navigation system before and found it straight forward. Love that it has voice prompts and you can see how long it will take you to get from point A to B. Can create an itinerary, maps of Canada are good. Points of Interests are common and current. Very Handy little device! Recommend it.

  2. I have found this GPS very easy to use and very reliable. It will acquire enough satellites for tracking while in my kitchen without a view to the sky. The voice prompts are very clear and helpful with a choice of male or female voices. The windshield mount is solid and holds well. Also included is an adhesive disk to use with the suction cup mount for dash mounting in those areas where windshield mounts are prohibited. Sometimes the local routes it chooses wouldn't be my choice, but it will get you there and route recalculation is very quick. I would recommend this unit.

  1. I bought the Lowrance XOG about a month ago. The main reason I chose this model is because of the SD memory card slot, which I wanted for topographical info. Eventually I'll buy the topo memory card, but until then, I'm happy with the XOG as is. In use, the unit brings me to my destination every time. The only gripe I have concerns the battery life, which lasts 3-4 hours. It's no problem to just leave it plugged in to an accessory outlet, so it's a minor gripe. Also, the suction cup mount is very well made and sturdy. It has 2 pivot points which adjusts nicely.

  2. I purchased this GPS as it had marine maps for us to use along with roads. In first 2 uses I was given blatant wrong directions that resulted in trying to turn into guardrail, going south on a north bound highway and a few others. Bad product for vehicle use. Maybe all the money was spent on marine/hiking stuff but not good for cars.

  3. I bought the XOG primarily for use on my motorcycle and car. I've had it for a few days now and am very impressed with the unit. The unit came with version 1.5 software. Lowrance had 1.7 download on their site. So the first thing I did was to upgrade. The satellite lock is very fast. It takes me right to where I asked to be every time. It gives you plenty of warning on turns and is very accurate as to where the turn is. I got the RAM mount for my bike and it worked just as well there as it did in the car. I had loaded a SD card with some of my MP3 music. While riding the bike I used the head phone jack to my helmet speakers to listen to music and navigation messages. When the unit needed to give me a navigation message, it halts the music, tells me what it needs to tell me, and starts the music again where it halted. Very seamless. The directions are clear and easy to follow even if you are not looking at the screen.
The cons for this unit: The battery does suck. About two hours is all it will carry the unit. Not much of a problem for me as most of my use is with external power connector. The screen does wash out in bright sunlight. Its still viewable, but you'll have a hard time reading the fine print. Overlays are configurable as to print size, which helps a lot.
As to performance and price. I would recommend the Lowrance XOG.

  4. Very happy with this unit. The roads seem to be up to date. I also bought a Lakemaster Gps chip. That is very cool, it shows you exactly where you are on the lake and at the exact lake depths. The only thing that would be nice for a updated model would be able to choose the shortest route verses the route that takes you out of the way just to use more state and interstate roads. Other wise very happy with the Gps.
    Tim

  5. We purchased the XOG to use as a cross over unit, for my car and for our boat. My husband purchased a Lowrance GPS/Fish Finder combo unit and we do a lot of fishing in Western Washington. We wanted a secondary GPS just in case something happens to our main unit on our boat, so we can get back home. We have the Nautic path Marine SD Card and when placed in the XOG it gives us great detail of the ocean bottom, depths and any sunken hazards we need to be wary of.

The mapping system for my car is surprisingly easy to use. After a few minutes of going over the manual and playing with the touch screen, I had it up and running and it is GREAT!

I recently went to Tucson, AZ. I had never been there before, but with the XOG, I had no problem finding where I needed to go. It comes standard with lots of maps and detail and I am so pleased. I recommend this unit to any one. The only draw back is it does not have voice activation nor is it blue-tooth enabled.

But for what I use it and need it for, it gets 5 BIG STARS!

  1. It worked fine in the start and then it couldn't stopped working. I checked the batteries and it still didn't do anything for me. I'm glad I brought this from a great company like Amazon though. I got my refund, so I feel good about that at least.

  2. fit in the glove compartment, does the work of helping my wife get where she needs

  3. this gps is absolutely worth the money. I vel-cro'd it to my motorcycle and have had no problems at all. It does everything I need it to and more at an inexpensive price.

  4. You will hear it a million times (or as many times as there are people who have GPS's) once you have one - especially if you travel often to unknown places (midwives, salesmen, weddings, vacation spots, etc), we don't want to travel without our GPS's! I have only used one - the Garmin - so I can't compare; but my daughter has a TomTom, and says she likes mine better than her touch screen GPS. I will tell you that this one being small is not a big help, because it's harder to read than the big ones (I mean while you're driving and need to keep your eyes on the road). It would be nice to have the voice state the name of the street, instead of just having to read it on the unit, but that's not been much of a hindrance. Also very important is the customer service you get with Garmin. Again, I don't know about the other brands, but the Garmin people are really there for you. I even got a free update ($60 value), when I called with a problem with wrong turns. And speaking of wrong turns, if you detect a glitch in Garmin's directions, there's a site you can go to and write a correction which (they say) they take into consideration when writing another update. Altogether, I LOVE (like alot) my GARMIN. I laugh at the commercial where the guy tells his that he loves "her"....!

  5. I purchased two of these GPS units for Christmas when we first moved to Georgia from California and they proved invaluable since we couldn't find anything. But, now, after less than 18 months, one of them only is "searching for signals" and never gets us anywhere. My husband went on the Garmin's website and replaced the batteries and reset the unit and it worked one time after that. Today we had to use my cell phone to get us to a birthday party in Atlanta and home again. Over a 1 1/2 drive that should have been much easier on the driver - me. We had to use my cell phone to get us back from Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago. Why does my cell gets a satelite, but not my GPS? I feel like this was a lot of money to have to replace one of the units already. It certainly isn't going to be with another Garmin. I asked my daughter-in-law how her's was working and she said "okay" but does lose the signal frequently but comes back. It's like ours went out for lunch and got lost - and now we are getting lost too! I'd check around before settling on this unit. The extra money is probably worth it. This one won't route you around traffic problems, either - when it even works! I paid $280 each for mine.
