5 comments about Gilsson 3-Foot High Performance Active Remote External GPS Antenna.
- Accessory antenna attached to windshield by suction cups is out of sight (except for the wire) behind the rearview mirror and increases the signal strength to my Garmin 60cs handheld GPS. Allows the handheld to be held under the metal roof for a closer look and handed to others in the vehicle without loosing the satellite signal. I'm very pleased.
- I purchased a Garmin 330 GPS only to find that it had an impossible time finding satellites in our 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It seems that all the electronics in the car somehow interferes with satellite reception...the Garmin works fine in other vehicles, even if it's not sitting right on the dash. I mounted this amplified remote antenna at the top right corner of the windshield and have no problem getting a strong signal. The price was one-third that of other antennas on the market. Highly recommended!
- I have a Garmin Street Pilot. The car I primarily use it in has an in-windshield antenna that prevents the Garmin from finding the satellites. I bought this, stuck it on the roof, and plugged it into the Gramin and it works better than it ever has. It finds the satellites as least twice as fast and never loses the signal. Have been using this for about 6 months now with no problems whatsoever. I highly recommend it.
- The tinted windshield on my Mazda Protege shielded my Garmin C330. Under cloud cover or rain, it couldn't acquire satellites, although the Garmin C330 works fine in my Fiero.
This antenna gives me good reception. It must be placed on the flat of the hood. With the 3' wire, I can't reach the roof. When on the slope of a fender, the antenna was useless. I wish I had clicked the 6 foot cord, because the 3 foot cord is almost too short, and limits where I can place antenna and the Garmin. But it works.
The antenna is not easy to disconnect or connect to the Garmin, so the quick-disconnect windshield mount only is quick if you leave the antenna plugged in; another reason to get the longer antenna wire.
Of course the magnet mount won't work for plastic-body cars like Fiero, Saturn, or Corvette.
- I have a 2007 Camry with one of those windshields that interferes with reception on my Garmin c340. Got tired of losing the satellites and got the Glisson antenna (with a 9 foot cord, didn't think 3 foot would be enough) which virtually eliminates satellite loss. I wrap the cord around the rear view mirror once and stick the rest up between the sunroof and the sunroof sliding shield. Works great up there. Didn't have to run it outside like I expected to. When updating my Garmin destinations indoors, I can now easily acquire satellite signals. which I could not do before connecting the external antenna, which just demonstrates the difference it makes.

2 comments about GARMIN 010-00459-00 Portable Fishfinder 90.
- Purchased this fishfinder on Amazon with $30 off when opened Amazon credit card. Installation was pretty easy, everything I needed was in a box. Took the boat out the next day on Wye River in MD, worked pretty well for me: showed water temperature at 80 degrees, finally warm! the depth gauge was pretty accurate too. I measured the depth with a pole and compared with Garmin and the accuracy was within 0.5 inches! I bought this unit because I had a budget under $100, but was looking for one that warns when the water is shallow and it also has a dual beam (you can set a narrow beam for more depth and accuracy or wider beam for greater coverage). The screen is big and clear, even in the sun thanks to a special anti-reflective coating, pretty easy to navigate through the menu, no need to load anything as this is NOT a marine GPS unit. Fish finding feature was neat (was assuring to see big and little fish on the screen). I think the manual stated the images on the screen had up to 5 seconds delay. Still not bad if you do not go too fast. I was crabbing that day, so cannot really tell if it helps you catch fish, but the images were definately clear on the screen. I did not get a portable hardware, but unless you switch between boats you do not really need it. I simply take the unit off the holder when park the boat, so it does not get wet/hot/stollen. The holder has a swiwel feature, so you can adjust it to whatever angle you like and then secure in that position. It also beeps when there is a school of fish nearby. I saw circles in the water and fish jumping, then Garmin started beeping, so it definately knows where the fish is. In overall, I think if you need a basic unit that warns you of water depth (you can set it to beep when it is less than X feet), shows where the fish is (including the depth where the fish is), and water temperature you will be happy with Garmin 90. It might not have a touch screen or complex menu options, but it definately does the trick for a lot less $. But if you also need a GPS feature, look into more expensive ones.
- Had to replace a Garmin Fishfinder 85 that failed after one year and only 3 months of service on the water. The Garmin 90 plugged into the boat's existing Fishfinder 85 sensors and worked immediately. Does an adequate job. I don't see a lot of differences from the Garmin 85.

5 comments about Garmin GPSMAP 76CS 115MB Handheld GPS.
- This is my second Garmin unit. My first was the eMap. I loved that one so I only researched other garmin units. This one had everything I wanted. I use it on the road, hiking the AT and marine navigation. To get more than simple use you have to purchased additional software. City Select for detailed local street level, Blue Charts for bathometric charts and topo for hiking. Battery life is excellent! The unit is larger than my eMap, but very light and water proof.
The only con to this unit is the lack of expandable memory. My eMap could accept cards with additional maps. That really hasn't effected my use. I'm a big Garmin fan from software to the handheld units.
- As a game warden in Florida there is a need for a GPS. We locate illegal hunting site quite often. When the time comes to catch the poacher we usually can't approach the site the way the poachers do. We have to come through different and unfamiliar ways. Sometimes through thick woods, swamps or other obstacle covered ways. This GPS with the contour maps and blue water disk is extremely helpful.. I would recommened this item to all.
- The unit itself is a little bulky but the larger issue is the maps. The unlocking process is just brutal. Its not worth the aggravation. Stay away. And just so you know, I'm an IT professional and this is the most difficult product I think I ever worked with.
- I originally purchased the GPS to use with my jet ski with the option to use it for navigtion around town as a secondary function. Seadoo designed special glove boxes to flush mount one of these units due to their superior waterproof ability to handle the wet environment experienced in skiing. However the City Navigator software coupled with the portable GPSMAP series provides an even more incredible combo worth far more then the dedicated units in my opinion. Overall it is very easy to transfer tracks from the unit to record fishing drifts and plot waypoints and routes on your computer for download into the GPS handheld. Instead of printing google maps, I use the mapping software to create waypoints and routes to all my destinations.
- Easy to use, after reading the instructions! Enjoy using this for maps
