- I also purchased this unit on HSN. Since it was a gift for my son, I wanted to make sure that it was truly user friendly. Well, it is. You don't have to go to a manual for directions in order to figure out how to use it. Great Product!
- I was a little dubious when I ordered this product as it is relatively inexpensive. The fact that this is a new product line for the Dummies people made me hesitant as well. However, I have been very happy with the unit in the two weeks I have had it.
Pros:
1. It gets a satellite fix very quickly, unlike my previous GPS devices,
which could take up to 10 minutes.
2. Very lightweight.
3. It shows road features such as medians and one way streets.
4. It speaks the street name for your upcoming turn (aka text to speech); the lack of this feature is probably the most significant drawback with inexpensive GPS units.
5. Technical support was prompt and courteous in response to my questions.
Cons:
1. No wall plug; it only comes with an auto charger.
2. Occasional map database errors.
- Tried to get a signal....was on the road for over 2 hours before it finally found one. The two other times we tried it we never got anything. I returned this product.
- This GPS works pretty good for the price it does make some small mistakes so be careful. Butt all-in-all it's a good gps
- After checking out the reveiws here, I went to HSN, and was surprised by what was written. Most were negative, and there were far more reviews at that site than here.

5 comments about TomTom ONE Portable GPS Automobile Navigator (Refurbished).
- I ordered a NEW TomTom One GPS from Amazon on October 2, 2007. I was sent a refurbished unit. I emailed Amazon 4 times starting October 3 to resolve the issue and had one "I am sorry" reply. I called and was told nothing can be done on the phone. I wrote a letter to Amazon on October 8, 2007 with copies of their ad advertising a new unit. It is now November 4, 2007 and I have had no reply of any type. The unit was charged to my card within within 8 hours of the order.
I have a unit I can not review because I can not open the box without losing my ability to be able to return the GPS. I have no GPS that I can use and my money is gone.
Amazon has made no attempt to reply to me in a month. No real service available. Careful what you buy - they do not reply.
NO REAL REVIEW OF THE UNIT AFTER A MONTH AS I CAN NOT USE THE UNIT UNTIL THIS DISPUTE IS RESOLVED.
EWB
- TomTom One is an absolute delight to use in the Northwest area. Its fast, accurate, very easy to setup, and intuitive to use. But, I had to return the first two units to get one that worked. Despite the issues noted below, I would buy a TomTom again. They are really very good at what they do when they work.
The first one locked up. After two hours of online trouble shooting, TomTom sent a replacement. This one worked but had to be reset after each use or it would not start. More online troubleshooting, and finally a replacement that worked.
My online search indicates that about 15% of users experience the lockups and reset problem, even on new units. One gets the impression that failed units are being recycled with little or poor refurbishing. (Perhaps their repair work is outsourced?)
Very well trained & friendly online support, but other than reloading faulty software, there is little they can do but authorize a replacement.
If all you want or need is a simple to use get from here to there navigation without add-on frills and entertainment, you will love the TomTom One. It makes for a fun trip.
However, be prepared for frustration with refurbished units. It would be smarter and much less frustrating and very worthwhile to search for a new unit at discount.
- This GPS unit works fairly well if plugged into power, but it has unacceptable battery life. I charged the battery overnight twice but it still only holds a charge for about 10 minutes. The GPS functions are good, not great. If you don't arrive at your programmed destination, you are constantly alerted to keep moving unless you program a new destination. To end a destination early, you have to go several screens into the interface - very inconvenient. I ended turning off the voice directions most of the time. I bought a refurbished unit, and I have read several negative reviews of model One refurbs since, so I suspect Tomtom dumps their inferior refurbished products back on the market. Very disappointing. I will avoid refurbs and Tomtoms from now on.
- I bought mine retail before X-Mas, so this is not a refurb review, but as far as the unit goes, it's great!
I have been using it regularly in Texas since purchase and it has always given 100% accurate directions. Easy to use, love the voice navigation and the screen is easy to see in any light (including bright sunlight).
We took it on the first big family trip last week and it performed like a champ. Took me straigt to every door we asked it to. We had paper directions as a backup but never had to pull them out.
I have never used the traffic on it, but for navigation it's a winner in my book!
-
This is one of the most featured-packed portable GPS system one can get for under $200.00. I did a lot of research and decided to buy a used or refurbished One rather than get the 3rd edition which lacks a lot of features like advanced trip planning and multiple via points. I have only been using my refurbished TOM TOM One for a week but so far so good. I highly recommend it for someone who wants a simple GPS with some advanced features that may come in handy for long road trips. It is definitely a better bargain than the Garmin Nuvi 200 or Maegellal Maestro. If you can't find a used/refurbished TomTom One or One (LE), go for the Tom Tom One XL. It is the same exact device but with a wide screen. My one complaint is that the suction cup mount arm is too short. When mounted, it is quite a stretch for me to interact with the device. I think I will have to buy a ProClip mount for it and my Jetta.

- This unit is essentially a paperweight. The maps are ridiculously old and there is no chance of getting updated versions, since ViaMichelin is no longer making GPS units. They have also turned a deaf ear to the existing customers who are begging for new maps. If you call customer service, they will outright LIE and say that new maps are coming soon, but don't believe it. The smart money is on anything but a ViaMichelin.
- I purchased the X930 for my wife. The con they list is probably the most important fact they can mention. It is difficult to the point of impossible (occasionally) to input and find locations. It would appear from the product's website that they have discontinued the product and even the website is somewhat difficult to get around. My friend has a Garmin and I recommend their product over this one with no reservations. I am unimpressed with the lacking userfriendliness of this product and do not recommend it's purchase despite it's low price tag.
- Really sorry I bought this one. Maps are old, can't locate my house on it and I've lived here 5 years. Little to no support from the company. It appears their main market in Europe. Map updates are not available. Find a unit that allows you to update your maps from the internet. I am sure there are better units available.
- I bought this product last year, it was like $175 when I got it. It works good, can guide you to the place you wish. Two point I don't like: 1. the screen cannot be clearly seen when strong sunshine. 2. Seems I never successfully mounted on my window, maybe this is my problem. Map is old, it would be better if free map update is provided.
- At first I was pleased with this unit but in less than 2 months of actual use it was on the way out. It refused to find some addresses. Then it would flash between screens. I called customer support with the usual results...no support. The foreign lady told me to do a hard reset and I did. Now the unit will not come up at all. If you must have a GPS please do not buy this one. A Garman or a Magellan is far superior and will last for years not 2 months.

- DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!! THERE IS NO SIGNAL AT ALL!!! AND U RISK "RESTOCKING" FEE AS WELL.
- Well satisfied with the instrument so far EXCEPT that though the voiced turns are geographically correct the naming of NUMBERED streets is at times way off. E.g. a left turn onto 84th street might be VOICED as a left turn onto 144th street. Can be confusing if one is completely unfamiliar with the area in play.
Have asked the company for their comment but received no reply.
- I had been pricing gps's on Amazon with text-to-speach in which the actual street name was announced. I came across this Harmon Kardon model with a very reasonable price point. The delivery was prompt and right on the money. As per the instructions I charged up the battery, opened the locking device outside, and received the gps signal. I entered a destination and was on my way. The gps worked like a charm with turns and actual street names being announced. The second time I tried it the gps read waiting for gps signal. I'm still waiting. The so-called manual or operator's guide that comes with the gps has only the basic start up instrictions. It is vague and does not supply enough enfo. I could not find a support site for Harmon Kardon on the web. I'm extremely dissapointed in this product and hope that Amazon investigates these short comings for me. Amazon once again has backed up their return policy and has aloud me to return the gps for a full refund.
- I don't like the product mainly because of two reasons:
- It takes a very long time (1-5 min) till it finds the satellite connection.
- It cannot really pronounce street names. It's not helpful to hear street names, but it's more trouble.
Also, it does not function if it gets sunshine for a while or is left in the car when the temperature is around 60s.
I do not recommend this product.
- Take time for intial set up and hard to use.
Not really as good as it brand name

- I got this GPS unit last week, and for an entry price range unit, I was really blown away by the performance and functionality of this unit. This unit only takes about 5 to 10 seconds to acquire satellites and locate my position, and I love the ability to select major road as a route option and the ability to navigate by higher level view or zoom in to local streets.
In the high level view, I really like that every street is named so I really know what's around me, and I can really see where I'm going. When I pull off route into a McDonald, the GPS recalculate my route in seconds when I get back on the road. I haven't tried out the MP3 player or the photo viewer yet, I am sure it work fine but I really don't need this unit for those function anyhow.
I've owned and use other navigation products from the Tom Tom One, to Mio C220, and even the Garmin Nuvi 360, I like this GPS unit the best. This product really exceed my expectation, so I highly recommend this product.
- I got it from staples, which has a very bad reviews. From my personal view, I found that this unit is reasonably good especially when you look at the text to speech function which is really nice at this price tag. It receive the GPS signals in about 1-3 mins, while the first time you use it may take longer time. The directions are clear and accurate.
One common problem one may encounter is that this unit may automatically shut down. However, after you change the setting for the sleep time, the problem will be gone. Some guys in the staples review give this unit a poor score due to this, while they don't know /change this setting.
The turn by turn and text to speech function is excellent. Some other guys in the staples review found that the battery maybe poor, however, for me ,it may last about 2 hours. This is reasonable for me since most of the time you will drive you car. Another good thing is that you can charge the battery by directly connected to computer.
Some minor problems with this unit is that it may not respond very quickly (compared to MIO C220) when you touch the screen. However, it is good enough to handle.
Anyway, this unit is a deal especially when you can get at a sub200 price.
- Bought one, had to take it back because at full volume I couldnt hear it. Got another and still had the same problem. Now I have a Garmin and can hear it fine.
- I loved everything about this unit. It was super-easy to use. Quickly responsive. Provided street names. Had all the features one could want. But we regretfully had to return it after one short trip. We soon discovered that when traveling at a faster speed on the open road, the volume, even at maximum, could not be heard over the normal road noise in a Honda Accord. If you're alone in your vehicle, no music and just in-town traveling, it would be ideal.
- It's 3-in-1 product. gps, mp3 player, and picture viewer. I did not use other than gps. It's a great product other than
1. It can be slow to update. On road it can be annoying, if your turns are within 200 feet or less. By the time gps's done saying, I've already missed the turn at the speed of 20miles/hour.
2. It does not get gps signal that easily.
good value for the price overall.

- I bought two, as they were on sale. I gave one to a friend. Both units are horrible. I have sent it in for service twice. It has a hard time gaining signal. It loses signal while driving. It does not always give the proper route. It notes exits on expressways where there are none. It freezes up. I have read other reviews. If you want it for a movie viewer, have fun. If you need it for travelling - do not purchase this unit. It probably deserves a recall. Many of the other reviewers had the same problems as me. In addition, JVC service doesn't care if they keep it for a year. All in all - Stay far away!
- Pros: Cheap. Was on sale for $150 from CompUSA
Cons:
1) Journey over by the time it finds signal
2) If it does find a signal, it sends you the most inconvenient way, tells you to turn where there are no turns.
3) It's too heavy and constantly falls off the windshield.
4) When it shows 3 out of 4 bars on the battery indicator = low battery and it's just about to die.
5) No map update support at all. I seem to spend most of my time driving in the wilderness, offroading according to this unit. (The Crosstown Expresway in Tampa - built in the 70's doesn't exist)...
6) Freezes up almost every time it's switched on.
7) Useless menu
8) Useless in cities due to poor reception
9) Useless in the countryside when driving under trees
Oh, I have another Pro:
For some reason this DID work going through the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 in Colorado... lol
- This little unit is a great buy for the money - Bought it and had it running in minutes, something my last GPS was lacking in. Even before I downloaded the updates - I still got signal inside at my desk, in a brick building nest to a computer!
Took it for a test drive and it got me there 1st try. Actually bought this new off of that auction site whom we shall not mention, and paid far less than what others are selling it for.
Minuses - A little larger than some units
Sounds are slightly annoying
Pluses - Movie/mp3 playback
Good reception
Well made
Speakers work great
Good VALUE
- I got this GPS in June 2008. It is very slow catching the signal and very hard to follow the directions. For every exit automated voice mentions to be on the left. I generally don't try to write bad reviews unless the item is horrible. One positive aspect is JVC customer service has done repairs and sent me back while I complained. Even after the service it's slow but works better. Invest your money on Mio, Magellean or Garmin. I used these 3 brands and they are pretty good.
- Well, I'm glad I sold this unit years ago right after I bought it (and purchased a different one). The value is just going to get less and less on this. I just wanted to warn other buyers planning to buy this now--DON'T! At the time, I bought this for $200 thinking that was a great deal... This GPS is honestly not even worth $100.
If this is your first GPS, the whole GPS feeling might seem cool at first, but once you actually use this and compare with other GPS units out there, this is complete garbage. It's absolutely useless.
- It takes a long time to lock on to the satellite. (only a few satellites built-in too, which means less reliability.)
- The unit is very fat because of the hard drive. Hard drive is prone to more failures. Makes additional clicking noises, like most hard drives, when accessing anything.
- POI, address searches takes forever. Worthless. Very very low processor.
- The unit cannot turn on right away. It takes awhile to boot-up every time.
- When navigating through the maps, it has to preload each area. It takes forever; it's like having a 28k dial-up connection or less and trying to drag through the maps in Google Maps. Very limited zooming/viewing options.
- Route calculations takes forever. If you go off course, recalculation is completely out of the question.
- Video playback is a gimmick. This is a GPS. It's not even worth it for the video capability because it is strict on the video resolution and file format (I believe it was something really low like 320x240 and XVID) AND because of the slow processor, it can't even keep up with most of the video -- even if you meet the minimum requirement/video bitrate, etc.
This is outdated technology. GPS is getting cheaper, since it's becoming more common, and you can get much better features/portability for your money. Even if this is selling really cheap on Ebay, I suggest you don't waste your money.

5 comments about Sony NV-U70 NAV-U Portable GPS Navigator.
- This device is very easy, simply type in the destination and it will tell you where to go, make a wrong turn and it recalculates to get you back on track. Very easy to set up and go.
- I just bought a refurbished NV-U70 for $129. Out of the box it worked well getting me home from the Sony Outlet store. I did get a message the maps are more than 12 months old but I called Sony and they are sending me the 2008 maps for free! This is lowest price I have seen for a GPS and it does the basics, shows the route, speaks the next navigations, calculates the re-route when you miss a turn or decide to go another way. It finds the position fast and the mount is easily moved from one car to another. Great price .. good options ... what more could you ask?
- My husband bought this a few years ago. The first problem we encountered was that you can't load the software onto a Mac computer, I guess he should have read the system specs before buying it. Second problem we encountered was that we couldn't load the software onto my work Windows based laptop either, so haven't been able to update the maps. The third problem we encountered was that it is difficult to change states with the interface. The fourth and most frustrating problem, especially for a New Yorker, is that when you enter a zip code for Brooklyn, then ask for 1st Ave, it wants to take you to 1st Ave in Manhattan, not Brooklyn. There have been times when I've just wanted to throw the thing out the car window. Instead I open the glove compartment and pull out the Hagstrom NYC atlas. I'm trying to decide whether we should just bite the bullet and buy a TomTom.
As an update, I stupidly bought the update disk. There are significant problems with Sony's update software. The software only works on Windows operating systems, but not Windows Vista. Also, the software will not load on any computer that has Microsoft Office 2007 loaded.
I reiterate, DO NOT BUY this product. I would go so far as to say, DO NOT BUY any SONY GPS navigation system. When you buy a system, make sure its accompanying software will work on your computer.
- It is better for Sony to manufacture electronics and stay away from GPS. I am a Sony Customer but highly disappointed with Sony GPS. I could not find any special feature which would make it better than 90 bucks GPS.
Interface not friendly need to go some steps to even find simple search.
You need to know zip code to get the correct street/address because if you just go with city name, it will give you multiple zipcodes and then come back not finding the street.
If you want to find POI, not easy to find and it will keep waiting for ever. I guess very slow processor.
Will take you through the crowded streets of city while easy and quick highway route is available.(even after selecting Quickest instead of shortest route).
Start in one direction and after some times make you turn in opposite direction going through small streets. Can't figure it out you are on the highway or 10 meter away on service road.
Battery life is low so you will have to keep it plugged.
Only interstate names are text to speech and rest of all streets just keep left and keep right.
If multiple exits on left/right you know the result.
Maps are atleast ten years old and last to issue the updates.
Signal strength is good but bad in snow and high buildings.
I would not recommend someone to buy this Sony GPS.
- The interface is difficult and not very intuitive to use. Why SONY makes things so complicated is unknown to me. I'm taking it back to Radio Shack and exchanging for a Garmin, I will gladly pay the difference and refurbishing charge.
