1. If one is interested in how this region has fit into the scheme of things over the past 250 or so years, this book is for you. It doesn't seem to play favorites, is well cited with loads of references and even though written in 1941, everything up to that point in time is well covered, especially the war-torn, strife-ridden years surrounding the Civil War. It is well-worth the price of admission for what it does tell and if one desires to dig even further, the references are there and hopefully still exist today, 65+ years after original publication. 5-stars all the way.
