  1. Sticklin's study of Southern Baptist progressives basically contends that a vibrant, although small and loosely organized, strain of progressivism flourished within the SBC. This strand of dissent stood in stark contrast to the confident triumphalism of the Southern Baptist institutional machine and wondered what might happen if Southern Baptist energies and organizations were directed away from self-promotion and toward alleviation of human suffering. Stricklin illustrates how various personal connections created this genealogy of dissent. He then explains the dominane SBC position consensus on race, peace and justice, and women in ministry, and then shows how progressives pursued a more radical response to these issues. He then contends that the agitation of progressives, especially in the area of women in ministry, was a key factor that set in motion the fundamentalist take over of the SBC.

Stricklin understands both progressives and fundamentalists as "outsiders" to the SBC moderate leadership. Thus Stricklin divides the SBC into three groups: 1. moderates, who placed their faith in tolerant leadership and the cooperative work of the institutions as the best way to accomplish God's will; 2. fundamentalists, who placed their faith in pure doctrine and who would rather limit the effectiveness of the institution in order to maintain doctrinal purity; and 3. progressives, who placed their faith in local congregations and informal networks and who wanted to use this grassroots movement of faith as a way to change the political and economic world.

Fundamentalists won control of the SBC because they were able to mobilize their supporters against the moderates, who were often characterized as "liberal" because of their willingness to tolerate the progressives. While the book could do more in explaining the theology of the dissenters, it succeeds in showing the various ways of being Baptist and suggesting why these ways could no longer coexist within the SBC.

  1. Great story of one man's journey to find his family roots. Lucky me, one of the families is related to me also. I liked the book so much, I bought a second copy to give to another family member who is "in" to genealogy.

  2. I am a genalogist and have common ancestors in the Topsfield, MAss.-Salem Witch trial section of this book.It is a good effort for those with a genealogy interest. It may not be that interesting to those who don,t have these.

  3. Excellent Book. Well written and good topic coverage by an excellent CNBC favorite. Bill G. did good job of bringing personal family history into today's world. Recommended reading for anyone involved in their own family genealogy.

  4. First, you should know that Bill Griffeth is my cousin - his dad and mine were brothers. I became a Neslund by adoption, and will forever honor my Neslund parents for nourishing another family's "extra" child. But adoptees often grow up wondering who they "really" are.
Bill's book has given me a window into my Griffeth family history that is fascinating, detailed with personal touches, and moves down through the many branches and twigs of great-great-great (etc.) grandfathers and grandmothers of the family tree. There are several surprising events in the family history, including a family member being burned at the stake in Salem, Massachusetts and a branch of the family joining Joseph Smith and the early Mormon church and later traveling west to help found that church's presence in Utah.
Many families in America have similar stories to tell, including engagements - both friendly and otherwise - with the Native Americans, ancestors fighting in the War of the Revolution, and the uncivil Civil War - sometimes serving on both sides against each other - and the great migration from east to west.
Cousin Bill has detailed the suffering our fore-fathers and -mothers made so that we can enjoy the freedoms we now have. It goes without saying, I highly recommend this book!

  5. Since I enjoy researching our family genealogy, I enjoyed this book, which combines genealogy research with a history of the early Christian church.

  1. I ordered 2 books. One was in excellet condition (as advertised) and the other was in good condition (as advertised). I enjoyed paying half price for the books. It was immaterial to me whether they were brand new or not; they were for my use. The content of the book was just what I was looking for.

  2. It is amazing to me how many Christians are leaving the teaching of the Bible and embracing a practice found in every pagan society of breaking curses. Don't you know that we are in Christ and that His Spirit lives in us? How can we be under curse? As it says in Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"--
Question: Where in the New Testament does it mention breaking generational curses?

  3. An excellent study that gives insight into many problems of unknown origin that you may be experiencing in your life. You begin to realize that some problems are handed down through the generations but you can break the cycle by utilizing God's grace.

  4. Received item as described, fast delivery, will purchase from vendor again
    Thank you
    M Haynes

  5. There were a few markings on the book but on the whole the product was in excellent condition. I am enjoying the contents of the books
