4 comments about Cite Your Sources: A Manual for Documenting Family Histories and Genealogical Records.
  1. For a book on such an important subject with regards to genealogy, I was a little disappointed. While there are ample examples throughout book, this book is out-of-date for today's genealogist. No mention of electronic sources and how to document. Save your money and buy "Evidence: Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian" by Elizabeth Shown Mills. Ms. Mills refers to Lackey's book countless times and gives better examples.

  2. This was THE authority on the subject, however Elizabeth Shown Mills' book Evidence! Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian is better.

  3. I have had my copy of the CITE YOUR SOURCES for so many years, I cannot remember when I bought it. The point being that this should be just about the first book anyone starting their reseach should buy. If we as new or researchers of long standing do not Cite Our Sources, our research is really not worth much to ourselves or to others. Thanks to Mr. Lackey for writing it and for those who have kept it in publication for so many years. To dwell on just a few chapters would be unfair to the entire book. Each page is most important to our research as a whole - not just in part as we all must know where each available proof is located in order that our information may be taken as fact rather than "I think or I believe".

  4. This book is well thought out and accurate; however, it is somewhat outdated for today's researcher. There are no mentions of web/Internet data. The formats suggested for the Works Cited or footnotes section of a genealogist's publication are somewhat archaic.

2 comments about Passports of Southeastern Pioneers, 1770-1823: Indian, Spanish and Other Land Passports for Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, North and South Carolina.
  1. This book was well writing, with many unknown facts on the movement of American families caming to the Southern states. It is a shame that it is out of print.

  2. The southern states east of the Mississippi were in a territory that was for a long time under Spanish or Indian jurisdiction. By law, only persons issued passports were allowed to enter the southeastern territories, and so the passport records have the largest body of data relating to the pioneers to the Southeastern United States.

Dorothy W. Potter spent eight years doing research in the records of the War Department, the State Department, the archives of the individual states, as well as records of the Spanish and the British in West Florida. So she has assembled a complete collection of the passports and travel documents issued to individuals and families going to the Mississippi Valley area from Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Never again can genealogists complain that research in the Old South is hampered by lack of a comprehensive source book, for in this one outstanding reference work there is now a huge and invaluable body of source material at their disposal. No wonder this book was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Tennessee Historical Commission!

"...This is one of the finest reference books we have ever seen."--Winston De Ville, Alexandria (LA) Daily Town Talk

"...Mrs. Potter has made a major contribution to genealogical research in the southern states."--Charles F. Bryan, Jr., Tennessee Historical Quarterly

"May I take a moment of your time to tell you how impressed I am with your Passports of Southeastern Pioneers. It is a model work of genealogical scholarship...."--Letter to the author from Elizabeth Shown Mills

2 comments about Sullivan's Hollow.
  1. This book reviews the history of a place that doesn't even exist to the rest of the world. I happen to live half an hour from the Hollow, and it fits the typical description of the "reputation" of the people that live there today.

If you like reading historical writings, I highly recommend this.

  2. This short book is interesting reading but not a serious history work. Those who live near Sullivan's Hollow have heard the reputation of the place, but if this book is accurate, there is little to the legend.

1 comments about Tracing Your Alabama Past.
  1. This book is great for the true researcher.
It gives the years in which each County conatins what records which will save a lot of phone calls & trips.
It refers to other wonderful books that one can get to trace something inparticular. It also refers to finding Alabama research in other States which I found most helpful.
