  1. Having used many other atlases in years of teaching geography, this new NGS product has an excellent balance of thematic maps, regional maps, and data. While my other favorite, Goode's, has better thematic maps for teaching human geography, the National Geographic College Atlas excels in its clear and complete explanations of physical geography. de Blij does it again!

  2. I purchased this as a gift. She is a huge fan of maps and searched for a good world atlas. "This book could not be more wonderful" were her words. Simply perfect.

  3. This book is an excellent resource for students at teachers alike. It has a great balance of different map types and the level of detail is beyond anything I have ever seen in any other atlas. If you're taking Geography or any class about Regions and Nations in the world, this is the book for you.

  4. I like the book for it's big pictures and ease of use. Complements my National Geographic maps well with its world facts summaries for countries and territories and geographic comparisons of oceans and continents.

  5. The "Wiley/National Geographic College Atlas of the World" is the same as the "National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World" with one exception: The former does not have the binding trouble that the latter has. The binding trouble happens when you get a location at the center of a two-page map. Then it is annoyingly hard--if not impossible--to see the location. This is because the hardbound binding is inflexible. For the same location in the Wiley edition, you can push down on the the pages and see the location, because the Wiley version is paperback.

I give the Wiley version four stars because it serves the primary purpose I want it for: quick reference. With 55,000 place names, it is easy to pull off my bookshelf and look up most locations. It has a "Geographic Index" section that allows you to zoom quickly to any area of the world. I recommend putting an adhesive post-it note or a paperclip on this section. I also recommend doing the same for the "World Facts" section, which serves as a quick reference for a country's capital, language(s), religion(s), and a few other interesting statistics. Each continent has special maps: satellite view, physical map, political map, natural-world maps (vegetation, climate, natural events [quakes, volcanoes, tsunamis]), human-world maps (population and language), and economic-world maps (land development, trade, economic development, energy usage, income). I won't list them here, but this atlas also has many global maps dealing with special things like energy, environment, and countries with nuclear weapons.

I do not give it five stars because I disaprove of its physical maps. I prefer physical maps based on elevation, not rainfall. Actually I presume that the Wiley's physical maps are based on rainfall. I am not sure exactly what they are based on. I am sure, however, that I prefer the levels of elevation displayed by the maps in my "Times Atlas of the World," which I think is the traditional basis for physical maps.

Speaking of the "Times Atlas of the World," it is the atlas you should buy if you want to feel some confidence in being able to locate relatively unknown places. But it is VERY bulky, and expensive. For in-depth reference, it is my choice of atlas.

3 comments about The Penguin Atlas of Women in the World: Fourth Edition.
  1. I absolutely love this book. For anybody who is interested in gender issues, geography, politics, or sociology, it is a must read. It's not actually much of a "read" at all. It is a very visual book, with lots of colorful maps and graphs with very interesting statistics that you might not have otherwise thought about.

  2. I used this atlas in an Intro to Women's Studies and a Feminist Theory course. It is a great source of material for paper-writing, with very up-to date statistics, and fascinating maps. Of course, it does not always have as much indepth information as I'd like, but the maps would have to be significantly larger to incorporate 'everything'.

  3. I have always loved maps. I have never particularly cared for "women's issues." This book is a bridge.

One of my friends had to use this book for a women's studies course, and I happened to take a peek at it, having sensed the presence of maps. I decided to get my own copy to further study the deliciously colored curves of the continents and the cute little charts and graphs protruding from them. While it is obvious that a portion of the information contained within this book is either biased or presented in a misleading fashion, going through the pages will make people think about the state of women around the world.

As other reviewers have stated, there is very little to "read" in this book--that is because it is an atlas. The maps are political and discuss (in their maptastic key-wielding way) topics ranging from women in government to violence against women to the beauty industry. For the little I spent on this book, and for the relative brevity of it, it has inspired an outstanding number of conversations about culture and the sexes. If you are looking for a way to get both men and women talking about related issues, without digressing into "men are evil, women are dumb," this may be it.

5 comments about Streetwise Rome Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Rome, Italy - Folding pocket size travel map with metro map, subway.
  1. Streetwise maps are my favorites for visiting any unfamiliar city, and the Rome edition proved to be no exception. Its laminated, heavy construction guarantees that you can fold, re-fold, and carry it in pockets, purses and bags without having it fall apart on you.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about on the Rome map was the way the Historic District was broken off from the other sections of the city...I sometimes found myself flipping back and forth between that part of the map and the other areas of the city, trying to locate where I was when traveling between them and having some difficulty. But within each district I had no trouble navigating with this map.

  2. I have several other maps by this company that I really like. The size is convenient, the plastic coating keeps them from tearing on a windy or wet day. But I threw this Rome map away in frustration and just used the one free from the hotel desk instead! I found it difficult to use; I'd look up at a street sign and then struggle to find that street in the tiny print and abbreviations on the map, and the index grid system was little help.

  3. I have field tested my copy.... Getting late in the evening, raining, wind picking up, tourists are cursing their free maps fom the hotel lobby. I also have become lost and disoriented. I quickly flip out my Streetwise map and orient myself in the right direction of my hotel in an instant.

Next morning, fair weather, I check my streetwise map again to plot my days perigranatsione....I never got lost once, and found things that I did not expect to see, thanks to the lovely 3D icons on my map.

Before you say that what I am saying is all blather, lemme say this. This was my third visit to Rome in bad weather and in good. This was my best visit ever. The same also when I visited Naples using a streetwise map.

    Phil.

  4. Used this map for walking around touring Rome for 4 days. It was accurate and easy to read (even though some of the street signs in Rome are not!) This was much more useful than any hotel maps we found and we did not get lost once.

  5. This laminated map of Rome was very helpful as we moved around Rome visiting all the major sites.

  1. Interesting world atlas for that low price!

  2. This atlas has 3 small wire rings attached to the binding, allowing it to be inserted in a 3-ring binder. It has large maps of each continent, several U.S. maps, the flags of the world and a mercator projection map of the world. All in all, not a bad deal. Compares favorably with many larger, more expensive atlases.

  3. As a high school teacher, I find this slender atlas invaluable. The maps are very well done, and even the smallest countries are well marked. Textbooks cannot keep up with changing borders, and these maps are comprehensive. The small wire hooks work very well to keep it in my binder.

  4. I never received this Atlas, and am expecting to see a credit to my Charge Account on my next statement.

  5. We give this to all the freshmen in our school, and Philadelphia has been left off the map of the United States. That hardly seems fair.

February, 2009 Update: Philadelphia is labeled in the current edition. Excellent! I'd make it 5 stars if changes were permitted.

  1. I really like these maps. I have for LA and Chicago, and even tho' those are several years old, I still use them for getting around basic streets, etc. on current visits. They're good for marking w/grease pencils when you want to know where something is, and how to get there (then wipe clean when done). This Manhattan version joins our collection, and was purchased for a trip, tho' we really didn't use it that much since I was familiar with where we needed to go/be. Most of Manhattan is easy to get around, and a perfect walking city. This map shows subways, but I wouldn't rely on it for that, seems a little confusing. The Metro maps are much better for tube. This is great for streets and neighborhoods.

  2. I ordered the Streetwise Manhattan Map after my daughter, who lives there and uses public transport, pounced on the first one I bought. (Her pocket map wasn't laminated and it had finally disintegrated.) She loves the new map. To compensate, she gave me the marvelous 'Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City.'
Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City
But reading 'Inside the Apple,' I wanted my map back in order to locate all the fascinating spots it mentions within the larger context. I'm enjoying the two hugely together, and will be primed for my next visit, ready to use busses and subways and winkle out all the treasures described 'Inside the Apple.'.

  3. This MAP will help you get where you need most of the time or at a minimum point you to the right direction. Very durable considering how many times it is unfolded and put into a bag or jeans.

  4. I just purchased this map for friends who are visiting from Canada. I first found out about Streetwise Manhattan when I was an NYPD Field Training Officer back in the the 1980's. The Association for a Better New York, then under the direction of former NYC Mayor John Lindsey, gave us cases of maps to issue to new police officers assigned NSU-3 in Mid-town Manhattan. With Streetwise Maps our Officers were able to give specific directions to visitors and residents on where a place was and how to get there. It does not give a description of a place just the location and how to get there in an easy to read format. The map was folded and ringed to exactly fit in the NYPD issued memo book holders. The NYPD copies did include some specific information not listed on the regular copies back then. I myself used the map to give countless directions to people and other Officers when I was assigned to the area around the United Nations. I also frequently gave away my copies to visitors when they asked me. When my son and sister were appointed to the NYPD and assigned to Manhattan I gave them copies. My father use to give copies to co-workers visiting his New York office, so they could explore on their own. One of his business associates was staying at a hotel on Central Park South at 5th Ave. and looking for Central Park and FAO Schwartz on the corner of E59th St and 5th Ave. The map let him know that he was there. Central Park South is also called W 59th St. Avenue of the America's is also called 6th Ave and Lexington Ave 4th Ave by locals. I do find it odd that with all the copies I gave away I now have to purchase a copy. If your coming to experience New York, and everyone needs to visit and enjoy the energy, arts, shopping, museums, and everything else that is New York at least once, you need a copy of this map and an MTA card for the buses and subways to get around. And yes the subways in Manhattan are safe, fairly clean, and the best way to get around.

  5. I just spent a weekend in Manhattan, and this map unfailingly took me every place I wanted to go! It is the perfect size for the average handbag. The print is readable and clear; the layout is great. In the hotel room, I perused my guidebook, but this was the only map I used or needed to navigate the city with my husband and kids.

  1. Being the tightwad that I am, I initially hoped to get by on a free map of Paris from an info station. Fortunately my brilliant husband insisted that we get a good map. We used this map constantly during our week in Paris, and since it rained most of the time we were there, the waterproof nature of the map was especially handy!
It was also great to see the metro and train lines superimposed over the streets.

  2. I've used Streetwise laminated maps in about a dozen foreign cities. They are always handy and durable. Perfect for tourists. Sure beats having to struggle with large fold-out maps.

  3. A friend recommended this map, as she had used one for a trip to London. So we bought one for London and one for Paris. Both were handy as we toured the two cities. With both street and Metro maps, conveniently sized, light weight, and durable, it was the only map we needed as we navigated the crooked streets of Paris.

  4. This is a great little map, sturdy and laminated, easy to read and colorful.
It folds up accordion-style to about the size of a folded road map, but thinner. You
can easily open it to one section and leave the rest folded, so it shouldn't be awkward
to walk and look at the map at the same time. It also includes inset maps of France and one
    of the Paris Metro system.

  5. This map is a horror. Part of Paris is on one side & it is continued on the back, I still haven't figured out how it all fits together. Save your money. Frommer's has an excellent pull-out map in their book that is much more comprehensive (and smaller for easier carrying).

  1. We received the road atlas soon after we ordered it. The large scale maps are very easy to read and so far we are very pleased with it. We are using this atlas in our RV and find it very easy to store behind our seats.

  2. All good surprises are worth a mention. My first was the speed this atlas was delivered by USPS. The second surprise was the quality package this atlas really is. I can't recall getting better value for money on anything. The pages are organised in alphabetical order according to State. The grid reference system used makes finding locations very easy.
    Only two small critisms.
    1. No overlap on most pages where maps continue from page to page, with the occasional exception.
    2. Index font size could be larger for ease of reading.
Both these cons are no doubt in place to keep overall atlas size to a minimum & do not detract from the quality product. Well done Rand McNally.

  3. unlike most road atlases, this is USA only. I agree with other reviewers that there should at least be some overlap of maps on the edges as it is difficult to follow from one map to another. Plastic ring binding might not have been the best choice for something that may sit in a vehicle during the winter, and the covers ought to be a bit more durable or laminated as just from leafing through the atlas the covers have already started to fold where one's fingers grip while thumbing through to find the appropriate page. Beyond that, it seems to be an adequate atlas and larger scale is appreciated, though don't expect any comparison to a delorme state atlas in detail.

  4. I ordered this atlas because it was much less expensive than the exact same one at a local bookstore. I like it because it has strong plastic "wire" binding, making it stay open easily. Also, it has lots of city maps on the same pages as the states. More than my old one. The only problem with it is that most states take up 2 or 3 pages. "Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Eastern Tennessee, Western Tennessee, etc. This makes for large print and lots of details, but all the page splits and turning of pages make it hard to view at times. But I like it a lot. And it has lots of helpful tourist information.

  5. LARGE SIZE MAKES IT EASY TO READ, AND THE RING BINDING IS GREAT AS IT CAN TAKE A LOT OF WEAR AND TEAR WITHOUT FALLING APART.

  1. A true classic. Always has been through the years. Very informative and easy to use. My Dad and I used it for or cross country trips and now I'm using it for moving my family from California to the deep South.

  2. We've used the Rand-McNally Road Atlas for years; our mid-90s edition was out of date. The 2011 edition is exactly what we need - covers all territory where we drive with good detail, yet is a manageable size for in the car. This provides great coverage, with much lower cost and complexity than a GPS unit.

  3. I bought this atlas as a gift for my father who has a knack for viewing maps. The details provided in this atlas is really amazing. My father can visualize almost all of these countries roadways sitting in yet another totally distant country.
This serves far better than a GPS provided you are used to following maps by yourselves than being guided by a voice. It is real fun.

  4. Although I'm pleased that this edition of the atlas attempted to add more unincorporated communities (I have an interest in unincorporated communities), I also noticed that other unincorporated communites that were in previous editions (especially in the Los Angeles and Tampa/St. Petersburg insects) were also omitted, which was disappointing. Other than this issue, the map has changed significantly for the better.

  5. I've never before written an online review of anything, but I was so disappointed by this road atlas that I thought I really ought to speak up. I was buying it to replace an old Gousha road atlas, which was getting kind of ragged. (Rand McNally bought out Gousha a few years ago and then shut the place down.) I expected the two to be relatively similar in quality, detail, and usability, but they were not. Here are a few of the differences: (1) The Rand McNally atlas has idiotic wastes of space. For example, instead of a legend on each page (as with Gousha), a very useful thing, we have the following: "Best of the Road. This red award ribbon marks a Rand McNally Best of the Road trip route. Our editors have chosen scenic drives peppered with tasty dining, unique shopping, [etc.]" -- and a photograph of a windmill! (2) Gousha used a yellow background to denote built-up areas. Rand McNally uses orange, instead -- making it very difficult to read the text in those areas. (3) I live near Boston, and this is the area that I know best, so I checked out Rand McNally's coverage. Here is what I found: (a) The city-and-town index (inconveniently located at the back of the book, rather than with the state maps, as in the Gousha atlas) understates the population of the town I live in BY A FACTOR OF SIX (they say 800; the correct figure is about 5,000; the population hasn't been 800 since the 1930s). (b) The book devotes only two-thirds as much space to Massachusetts as Gousha did. The enlarged map of the Boston area is less than half the size of Gousha's. (c) Many of the "scenic routes" shown in Massachusetts aren't the slightest bit scenic. (It makes me sad to think that trusting tourists may actually go out of their way and waste valuable time just to ride on these dreary roads.) BOTTOM LINE: I sent the foolish thing back. I'll stick with my old Gousha, which gives me much more information and presents it more clearly. It also, as far as I know, makes no mistakes. (Sure, it may make some. Who knows? But the fact is that I checked the Rand McNally on one town, essentially randomly selected, and it botched it. That's an overall score of 0%. How much confidence does that leave you with?) The only reason I gave it two stars rather than one is that I have no idea how bad the competition is: if you need a road atlas, and I won't let you borrow my old Gousha, for all I know this sorry thing may be the best that you can do.

  1. I work in national security and I use this atlas for quick reference. Every single American should have one and study it. There is no reason why anyone should not be able to find Jordan on a map. Goode's World Atlas is a classic with all the features you could ever want in an atlas.

  2. Teacher actually wanted the 21st edit.
but he said this one works as well, so i bought it.
    Bought it Brand-New.
please keep one thing in mind. Get the same book as ur professors are using.
that way u won't be spending time to find the page/section that he/she talked about.

  3. The twenty-second edition of Goode's World Atlas results from the latest blend of geographic scholarship and GIS technology for map production, and thus is a major reworking of the atlas, not just an update. It offers new maps on topics ranging from global climate change to water resources, and provides an outstanding survey for any library seeking the latest geographic resources.

  4. Correct item shipped expeditiously with great follow up. You are a wonderful asset to this community.

    Kind regards

    Bazyli

About the book: I needed this for an international business course, boy was I surprised to open it. I was expecting glossy pages with clear maps. Boy was I wrong. I wouldn't use this book for anything other than a tea coaster on the coffee table, but make sure there is another book around just in case someone decides to open this one.

  5. Great service, got here before I even expected it. Very happy with the condition of the book. Looking into them again whenever I need a book.
