3 comments about The Lunar Garden: Planting by the Moon Phases (Capital Lifestyles).
- This small book is a lovely guide for people who want to start their own garden that grows by the light of the moon. You even get a free package of seeds with the book!
I highly recommend this book to all gardeners and flower lovers who want to be unique and try something different!
- This book was just "alright"
I love the idea of the book. It did have some interesting facts, but being a short book to begin with I was disappointed to find that more than half of the book was a lunar planting calender that goes from 2000-2003. Hello, it's 2006. Being that the calender was more than half of the book I think that some sort of perpetual calender would have been more appropriate.
I think that you might find more of what you are looking for in another book.
When I get a new book, it is like Christmas morning. I cannot wait for the kids to go to bed to dive into the book. I was disappointed that I read the entire book in about 1/2 hour.
It is more like a magazine article.
- I was extremely disappointed in this book...the calendar (the majority of the book) covers '01-'03....so, I returned it.
the rest of the very basic info can be found online: [...]
I am upset by the fact that the expired calendar is not mentioned, making the description misleading...
I guess I have to make sure to check publishing dates in the future.

2 comments about Gardening Through Your Golden Years.
- You may buy this book for a parent or aging friend, but first take the time to read it yourself. It's not a how-to book, because people who have been gardening for decades don't need to know how to garden. Instead, through personal stories that cover many long lifetimes of gardening experience, this little gem of a book captures the constancy with which gardens nurture us, helping us through the hardest times while providing moments of joy that stretch into lifetimes.
- Gardening Through Your Golden Years is done in three parts, starting with interviews with senior gardeners. Next are gardening suggestions and advice. Third and last are essays by long time garden writers, minimum age of 65.
Most of the gardeners interviewed have lovely, well-established gardens. All have had varied and interesting careers. It would have been nice if one or two gardeners with slightly more limited resources and smaller, but very nice, gardens had been included. We have a retired neighbor that fits this description and ensure we walk past her garden at least once a week in the summer just to enjoy watching it grow. It's really very motivating to those of us not quite so gifted with a green thumb.
The how to section of the book includes ideas for both how to garden and how to do it easier and more safely. Excellent advice with suggestions that everyone can use to their advantage.
The final section of essays is easy, pleasant reading. My favorite, The Orange Mailbox, by A. Carman Clark, is fun to read with some outstanding suggestions.
Overall, a little book that is both entertaining and informative.

4 comments about Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening.
- Well it is a textbook. It is authoritative and boring to read unless you are into the subject. It has no pictures. It is a classic. Put it on the book shelf and pull it out to look stuff up on organic gardening. You know it will have the answer. Well most of the time - keep in mind if you are trying to find out about Neem oil for roses look in something more recent.
- I have been a poor man's gardener for 40 years or so. Over the years I have accumulated dozens of books or booklets on gardening, yet I always end up looking up any subject in the Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening. It's the most useful book I have.
- This book has been around for many years and is one of the most valuable resources on organic gardening. True, it does not have beautiful glossy coloured pictures to capture one's attention, and you likely will not find it sitting around on someone's coffee table ready to stimulate conversation. However, what the book does offer is a wealth of information covering organic garden techniques, vegetable growing, organic fertilizers, fruit orchards, fruit and nut culture, herb gardening(my favourite section) and exotic tropical fruits (certainly not conducive to all climates, such as mine, if you are an outdoor gardener.) This is not a book the average person will sit down and read, cover to cover, in an evening - the length is over one thousand pages! However, if you are into organic gardening this is a must-have book. I particularly like the way the book is organized; considering the size of this monsterous volume, everything was easy to find. You are definitely getting a terrific value for your dollar, considering this is probably the only book you will ever need in respect to organic gardening.
- When this book arrived after ordering it from Amazon (and being fooled by other reviews), my husband and I couldn't stop laughing--this is not an encyclopedia but a pocket sized dictionary (literally 2inches squared), with entries such as "ants"--the descriptions of anything are way too short to be of any merit, and if you really need to look up the definition of "ant" you are going to need a lot more help in your garden than this book can supply!!
The only reason it gets two stars instead of one is the shock-value I had when I received it--and a good laugh is always worth something.
In place you might consider Nancy Bubel's "Seed Starting Handbook"--lots of useful, easy-to-follow, and fairly detailed information on gardening.

2 comments about The Feng Shui of Gardening.
- While this book was very short on useful feng shui information from a FS consultant's point of view, it was extremely entertaining in other ways. I really enjoyed the symbolism of the different plants in Chinese culture, the aromatherapy-as-applied-to-gardens section, and the useful listing of Oriental plant materials, their history, and cultivation data. No photos, but, hey, you can't have everything. Forget the Feng Shui part, it's still a great book on Chinese garden lore.
- The ancient and popular form of Eastern garden design, feng shui, holds that a garden should be a place for reflection, a place of peacefulness and happiness and that the garden should reflect the harmonies of nature. Philippa Warning shows us how to achieve this ideal setting by walking us through the basic design principles of feng shui in The Feng Shui of Gardening. Waring emphasizes key elements including the importance of representing all the forces of nature (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and allowing them to play against and with each other to create a positive flow of Chi.
While the directionally-challenged among us may be frustrated with Waring's initial attempts to interpret the "facing" direction of our homes and gardens (the front is not always where your door is!), the chapters on fragrant flowers, trees, and bamboos, with their select lists and descriptions of plants, puts the reader back into the feng shui state of mind. Waring has a clear understanding of the feng shui concepts and presents them here in a compact, easy-to-reference book that can be used to create a brand-new garden or to simply adapt your current garden to include feng shui principles.
