  1. If you're interested in providing habitat for birds, this is a good resource...but if you're interested in preserving habitat for birds, ignore the invasive plants listed. I had assumed that an updated version of any book wouldn't list plants that are among those invading our natural areas! Even if these plants do provide nesting areas and food, they ultimately lead to a decrease in habitat as the invasive plants, such as multiflora rose, displace native plants. (For lists of invasive plants, check out www.invasive.org and other websites.) The book sometimes cautions to keep these plants under control, but why contribute to further problems when there are so many great native plants? Seeing these plants listed in a book that was updated so recently was very disappointing. Use this book cautiously - the information presented is very useful and well-organized. Before planting any of the plants listed, though, verify that it isn't invasive in your area.

  2. A very good book, can be used as a reference book when planning for planting, very informative and interesting.a worthy addition to the birders library.Good for beginners and expierienced persons familiar with plants and birds.

  1. We live in the Chicago area and this book was a huge help when, after losing three thirty year old pine trees, we needed to purchase new trees for our yard. In the past I have not always found the nursery people very helpful. Mistakes can be very costly in terms of money and labor. I actually brought this book with me and I felt much more confident in my purchases. I will never again go to a nursery to purchase trees or shrubs without it.

  2. This easy to read book is geographically specific.
It gives the beginning gardner a chance to schedule each month in the garden.
I would have liked some more actual instructional information but I will recommend this book

  1. This is a good resource guide for anyone who has questions about shrubs. The planting guides, soil requirements, watering tips, sunlight needs, etc. all play a big factor in the success of any plants, especially the ones that require a little extra care for outside growth.

  2. I've lived all my life in the north, and so I know northern gardening well. However, I moved to southeastern N. Carolina 3 years ago, and discovered that it's a whole different world for gardening, given the intensity of heat and humidity. Plus, in New England I learned how to make plants grow in rocky soil. Here the trick is to get anything to grow in sand.

This was the first garden guide book I bought, and four more followed - and this is the only one I constantly use. I've landscaped my entire yard based on its advice. It gives all the common shrubs, shows what they look like in color pictures, offers information on the kind of soil they like (acidic, sandy, well drained, etc.), light requirements, which bugs they're vulnerable too... I lost the book when I left it at a garden center accidentally - and I immediately came to Amazon to get another copy.

For information on growing southern shrubs this is the place to go.
