3 comments about Hydrangeas.
- Every page has color pictures on it. The bulk of the book describes each variety of hydrangea. There's a little info on planting.
- This is a terrific little inexpensive book on hydrangeas. It was published in 2001/2002 by a New Zealand horticulturist. The pictures are luscious and most are labeled with specific variety names. However, this is not just a coffee table book. It contains easy to understand, accurate information on growing hydrangeas. The chapter on pruning is excellent and includes a section on pruning tree form hydrangeas. I would highly recommend this book.
- This is a wonderful and inexpensive book with many beautiful pictures and lots of useful information on hydrangeas. I will reference this book over and over.

2 comments about Beautiful American Rose Gardens.
- I was drawn to this book by the stunning pictures of roses and rose gardens. However, it is the wealth of valuable information on EVERY aspect of roses that make this one of my all-time favorite gardening books.
This book would make an excellent present for the neophyte and expert gardener alike. The author's passion is contagious. A great read and highly recommended
- Beautiful American Rose Gardens is a good but not a great book because too many of the rose gardens discussed in this book are too large (acres and acres). The pictures are wonderful and descriptions are well written and I recommend that rose lovers read this book. However, the book doesn't give enough detail into how a reader can create their own rose gardens, especially if they are not professional rosarians or wealthy enough to afford professional gardners. Most of the gardens in this book are owned by rose retailers or rich or famous people like Bob Hope.

1 comments about The Little Big Book of Roses (Little Big Book) (Little Big Book).
- What a gorgeous little book. All the rose lovers I know are getting one for Christmas this year. I first discovered it at an exclusive gift shop in a high-end mall, but resisted the urge to purchase, assuming it would cost far less at Amazon. I was right. Almost everyone who sits on my couch instinctively picks up the book and looks through it. Quick hits of all things rose (poems, lyrics, stories).

5 comments about American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses.
- This book is the greatest reference book you can have. There are over 2000 roses described, each with pictures, with everyting you would need to know such as average height and width (and height range based on climate), blooming period, fragrance, any drawbacks the flower has or any disaes susceptibility, and other names the rose is known by.
This is the book to go to if you read about a rose or go to a website with no picture and need to look up the color and size characteristics.
This is THE rose encyclopedia!
- though not our only guide,it is the first off the shelf when researching a new rose or history of favorites.living in california,we have to add a foot or two to heights, but otherwise this book is most accurate.this last volumne was purchased as a gift;we know it will be very appreciated.
- It would be difficult to over praise this excellent encyclopedia. The photography is outstanding; the descriptions of roses intense yet easily understood, and the added features on various rose breeders and their histories are so helpful. The introduction directs the reader on how to use the book to best advantage. Yes, a marvelous book, this first edition of The American Rose Society.
- Without a doubt this is my favorite book on Roses. There are numerous wonderful books on Roses - but I NOW could not live without this book. Simply great information such as the size of the rose bloom, whether the particular rose is once-blooming or a repeat-bloomer, strengths and defects, year introduced, etc., such useful and interesting details. From me, a big "Thank You" to Charles and Brigid Quest-Ritson for writing and putting this book together!
- I hesitate to call any reference book a "Bible", as the term is overused, but it may apply in this instance.
Excellent resource for experts and novices alike. A must have for the serious rosarian.

2 comments about Taylor's Guide to Roses: How to Select abd Grow 380 Roses, Including the New Hardy Ever-Blooming Varieties - Flexible Binding (Taylor's Gardening Guides).
- This book has lovely photographs, good descriptions of the plant, and suggestions on how to use particular rose varieties in your landscape. It is written with enthusiasm and is a pleasure to read.
- Taylor's Guides are popular tools for plant selection and this revised edition is no exception. The size of the new edition is a little larger than the old one but it is still a comfortable size for reading in bed or taking with you to the nursery. 380 roses are covered here, from all rose classes. 200+ pages are glossy and contain a color photograph of each rose. The gallery is followed by an "encyclopedia of roses" which gives basic information about growing the rose and how best to use it in the garden. A brief introduction covers the basics of buying roses, growing and caring for them. A chart is also included which explains pest and diseases and offers ecologically safe controls.
This is a good guide but if you are seeking a book that is more comprehensive and includes a larger selection of roses, you might want to check out "Botanica's Roses" by William Grant. This book includes over 2000 roses and is priced similarly. Also, the just released "American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses" is also outstanding but much higher in price.

5 comments about The Ultimate Rose Book: New Expanded Edition.
- This is the first Rose Book in my collection; it is responsible for my interest in roses. It is the biggest book of my rose book collection; in height, thickness or weight. Its production qualities are high and more than a decade after purchasing it, it is a book I still hold dear.
Over 1500 roses are presented, and for each there is a photo. The writing is clear and concise. And more than any other reference, we hear the writer's voice. When Macoboy particularly likes a rose, we know it. If he were writing a scientific reference, this may not be quite appropriate, but this personal voice brings us a step closer to viewing the roses as he does. And this draws us in.
A few bits of crucial information are listed in tabular form, the rose's breeder, its class, and how fragrant the rose is. Entries are listed alphabetically in three main sections: Species Roses, Miniature Roses, All other roses.
The book was published just after the commercial success of Austin's first remontant English roses and a handful of these roses are included.
But almost twenty years after its first release (the edition I write about was printed in the late 1980's), the book is beginning to look and feel dated. There has been a huge amount of work in the area of minis and this section seems quite dated. A significant portion of the Hybrid Tea roses and floribundas are not in commerce - not even at specialty nurseries. And many of the most popular of these classes do not appear. To make matters worse, a noticable portion of the roses Macoboy treasures were distributed only in Australia, so European and American gardeners never would have had a crack at them.
The photos are a mixed bag. On one hand almost every rose about which he writes is photographed. This is a monumental achievement. Few rose books come so close to complete photographic coverage as this one, and any that acheive full photographic coverage are less encyclopedic in scope and/ or present smaller photos. This may be the most photographically generous rose book in print.
Most of the rose photos are pretty good. Many are excellent. And some of the excellent ones fill a whole large page. The layout is large and the feeling it creates is lush and luxurious. But a few of the photos are seriously flawed. One photo, for instance, is of a rose that is waving back and forth madly in the wind and all we can see about the rose is that the flower is reddish - the whole photo is a big smudge. And there are a few cases in which we have serious questions about color reproduction.
So who should buy such a book? Well, if you are a rose-lover and wish to draw someone else into the field, this may be the best book to do it. The lavish illustration and infectious writing will do the trick better than just about any other book. And if you are a rose-lover and you want a coffee table book on roses, this may be the best choice. Or, if you know someone who is a little interested in gardening but knows nothing of roses and is afraid to take the plunge, this would be a good introductory gift.
If you just want a reference, get Botanica's Roses it is more up-to-date and it presents more roses. And visit RoseFile.com for other info on roses and to get help finding more books about roses at Amazon.com.
- This is such a lovely book, it's worth owning just to look at the beautiful photographs of roses. However, it offers much more. There are full descriptions of each rose, including origin, developer, growth, fragrance, etc. I needed to find a rose developed in Germany. Using this book I created quite a long list of potential roses. When I located a grower of the rose I wanted, it was interesting to see this book prominently displayed among his reference works. Highly recommended.
- This is an excellent book for those gardeners wanting information on many of the older hybrid teas and floribundas plus climbers that are carried by only specialized rose nurseries. This book also tells it like it is and so you get the negative aspects of some roses. Yes the book is VERY large but perfect to raise a small child to the table.
- We all know that most women love to receive flowers - especially on Valentine's Day. This year I decided to do something different and give my wife, who loves roses and grows them, the "Ultimate Rose Book" instead of a bouquet that would only last a week. She abasolutely loved it! She has poured over it again and again, and will for years to come. The photography is gorgeous and information very helpful. We highly recommend it to any serious "Rose" person.
- Beautiful book--makes me want to run out to the garden & see what roses I can plant.

2 comments about All About Roses (Ortho's All About Gardening).
- This book is definitely very good. The first time I opened it, I was disappointed, as I saw in the first two chapters a history about roses. Then comes the good part: it explains whatever you may need to take care of your roses. It has a lot of pictures and photos, it explains what kind of soil do roses need, how to choose the right plants, planting the roses, watering, fertilizing, pruning, reproducing, combating pest and diseases, how to protect the roses from freezing, etc. It includes pictures of how roses diseases looks like, gives you an explanation of the symptoms, and the solutions available for the disease. The last two chapters describe how to enjoy roses indoors, how to make potpourri, and has an "encyclopedia of roses" with photos of a lot of different species. In short: buy this book. Definitely the "American Rose Society endorsed" logo is well earned.
- I found this book to be very helpful. in fact I found just what I wanted. It tells you what types of roses are fragrant, dissease resistant, everything you would need to know about each rose. It also had beautiful pictures and was very easy to follow.

5 comments about Landscaping with Roses: Gardens Walkways Arbors Containers.
- This isn't your usual all-encompassing guide to rose varieties: instead it tells how to incorporate the rose bush into a variety of landscaping goals; from walkways and arbors to container gardening. Tips on choosing and growing the newer, hardier, low-maintenance breeds blend with those on how to arrange roses in conjunction with shrubs and other perennials for maximum effect.
- There are many books about roses but this is one of the better ones. Written by well-known garden host (HGTV and PBS) Jeff Cox, it is a beautiful yet practical book that delivers exactly what the title promises.
The first couple of hundred pages give you ideas for using roses in a whole range of different garden settings. The remainder explains how to buy, plant and care for roses. The advice is excellent for the novice or intermediate gardener. I give the writer full marks for not just providing a "directory of roses" - a cop-out all too often used to fill pages in garden books. Instead he shows how different types of roses can be used in the landscape. The book has plenty of colour photographs showing roses used in different settings. I have to say that I was turned off by the hype on the cover. This is not a "ground-breaking book", the effects are not "dazzling" and as a guide it was useful rather than "inspirational". However, the writer has produced a practical, workman-like guide to effective landscape design using roses. The book is well-designed and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who was thinkinf of incorporating roses into their garden.
- I love this book, and have found tons of inspiration in it. It's filled with ideas, technical answers, and beautiful photos. The book has tons information and is not just a glossary of popular roses.
The only drawback I found with this book is that almost all of the photos are of pink roses. I was hoping to find more photos of inspiring landscapes with yellow and red roses. However, that's only a minor detail, and all in all this book is fabulous. Highly recommended!
- I must have 30-40 books on Roses, and this is my very favorite! The practical approach to planting and growing roses, plus the realistic, yet beautiful photographs are just two of the reasons every rose grower MUST have this book among their collection. I especially enjoyed the landscaping listing of disease-resistant selections. Jeff Cox knows his roses!
