- Covers all aspects of lavender culture, taxonomy, uses, extraction, farming ,world-wide.Plenty of illustrations.Really in depth, very readable, all you ever wanted to know about lavender.Great for any lover of herbs with lots of recipes and lavender products in addition.
- I have just read the new revised edition of Lavender Sweet Lavender (released for the millenium). It has been much enlarged with new large sections on lavender growing, farms and products in Provence and in the USA, as well as a masterly and comprehensive overview of the genus, its species and hundreds of varieties. The photography is wonderful (all new and from around the world) and the writing is just so evocative.I agree with a previous reviewer. It remains the most authorative text on the subject, but it is also a book to dream over and to read many times.

- I just saw this book while visiting a B&B on a lavender farm and came right home to try to find a copy to buy - i just had to have it! The photographs of commercial lavender fields in bloom are unbelievably gorgeous and make you want to take the next plane to Provence or Norfolk. The history is fascinating and also beautifully illustrated with pictures and quotations. The crafts are lovely and the recipes tempting. This book is a treat for the gardener, cook, craftsperson, traveller, historian and many others as well.
- This is a great book if you want to learn a little bit about growing and using your lavender.

- Recipes, aromatherapy, herb pillow directions, advice on soaps, nosegays, potpourri, it even includes directions for making lavender wands and bath bags! Each two page spread has its own theme, my favorite was the end of the book, entitled 'Tea Time' with recipes for lavender biscuits and directions on how to make lavender tea. This little tiny book (only 41 pages) is packed with beautiful pictures and loads of information. My only regret is that I didn't get the rest of the books in this set.

5 comments about The Lavender Garden: Beautiful Varieties to Grow and Gather.
- I enjoyed this book because it didn't assume you were a botanist, but explained things in a way that answered my questions and yet wasn't too simple. Compared to the several other of the Lavender books that I have purchased I felt that this one was the most complete, it had a nice breakdown of the lavenders and good sections on growing. It is a book of substance and readability. My advice is that if you want a book to get you started and only want to buy one book, get this one.
- Grew up with vast fields of French lavender as a child and lavender is a daily part of my life still. Love this book because it gives so much useful information on soil requirements, watering and best type of lavender to grow where you live. There is also a great recipe section in the back part of the book with the Buttermilk Lavender Bread and Lavender Lemon Shortbread (which is a cookie) being two recipes that even the most manly of men would even enjoy. Beginning on page 112 the author has given a Farms and Garden listing for throughout the states Canada that carry lavender items. On page 116 the author provides a good map of the United States and the different growing zones for those interested in growing lavender. Will also note the book is beautiful and one that I love to simply pick up and re-read often.
- Lavender is my latest garden discovery -- easy to grow, hardy, useful, beautiful.
- Of the five books on growing and using lavender, Robert Kourik's book provided the most practical information on growing lavender. It is well written and nicely punctuated with beautiful photographs.
- This is a great little book all about lavender. It contains lots of information and beautiful pictures about the many types of lavender available. If you were to only buy one book on lavender, make it this one.

3 comments about Lavender: How to Grow and Use the Fragrant Herb.
- This book is beautifully illustrated and very thorough in its contents about lavendar. Varieties, soil and climate conditions are all covered in this book. But it really wasn't for me. I would have liked to have seen a lot more recipes and uses for lavendar for which there are many more than what was suggested.
- I am new to cultivating lavender and I took this book out of the library only to find that it is INVALUABLE and I had to purchase a copy for my home. I refer to it again and again.
The author is very knowledgeable and covers a variety of topics which are all of interest to me. Her writing style is engaging and you can tell the author knows her stuff. On top of all that, there are beautiful pictures throughout. This book helped me greatly to learn what variety works best in my home garden. Excellent book and a must-have for anyone interested in lavender. If you are looking for a recipe book look elsewhere--this book is for serious gardeners.
- I have been growing lavender for 3 years and bought this book primarily for information about improving the quality of my plants and crop. While Ellen includes interesting projects and tidbits, this book definitely did not meet my needs as a grower.

- This is a lovely book full of in-depth information about different types of lavender with beautiful, detailed pictures. It's a great reference source, but works equally well as a coffee table book because it is so stunning to look at. I have only one minor criticism of this book and that is that it doesn't go into enough detail about the Lanata hybrids that seem to do well in our hot, dry southern California climate. I would have liked to have seen more pictures of these particular lavenders (there are a few, but not that many) and would have enjoyed learning more about them.
- Virginia tells all about lavender! This is the only book you need to be successful growing lavender.
- If you are a lavender lover who maintains all the plants in the garden with labels, then this book's for you. In a recent move, the labels of two plants were lost--I needed to re-identify them. This is a technical book right down to it's bracts and sepals. But it also is beautifully photographed so one can identify individual flowers, not just big pictures of a plant's growing habits. The only drawback was falling in love with a particular flower and realizing that it might only be available in her English homeland. But part of the fun of collecting is in the hunt! This book is truly the lavender "bible".
- This lady knows her stuff. Every attribute you ever wanted to know about lavender is here. Though told from an Australian's exposure to lavender it is the bible for lavender grower's in identification of species and their traits. My only wish is it was more directed at America's varieties and conditions but it can be easily enough transferred over. The pictures are stunning and accurately done
- In my opinion, Virginia McNaughton's book, Lavender the growers guide is a very good book. However, the title may mislead buyers into thinking it is a "how to" book, which it isn't really. It provides excellent detailed information on classification of lavender, but does not provided a great deal of information on actually growing it. Since there are numerous other sources on the ins and outs of growing of lavender, but few, if any others, that provide this level of detail on classification of lavender, it provides a unique contribution to the field, albeit a bit esoteric for the average gardner.

3 comments about Growing & Using Lavender: Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin A-155 (Storey Publishing Bulletin, a-155).
- This summer I planted 80 lavender plants in honor of my mom who recently passed away. This book has been a major part of the success my garden has achieved, with 2 harvestings of lavender to date. An excellent resource and inspiration for how to grow and use lavender
- This little gem is so full of useful information it puts the other books I have on lavender to shame. Not only does it discuss the many varieties of lavender and their history and growing wants/needs. But one learns how to propagate, trim and use the various lavenders be it in bath items or medicinally, cooking or as gifts. I grow lavender and make various things from the plants but really want to try making the 'Net sachets' shown on page 24 which are gorgeous!
- This is a brief bulletin of information but still quite helpful. Ms. Barrett touches on the types, the maintenance and the uses of lavender. It's a small book, but I found tips and recipes in here that were missing in other lavender books. It's plain and simple, short and sweet. A very good basic reference book.
