  1. These books are pretty expensive, and unfortunately they are not very representative of the current (2008) test. They are really only helpful to give an indication of how the test questions are worded.

  1. Borrowed this book from the library but have to buy it. It's a good reference and does great explanations. Real helpful for a novice like me.

  2. This is a very good book for those who already have a pond. It does not get into the design and construction of ponds, but concentrates on maintaining the pond you have. This is exactly what I was looking for. I did not need to design or construct a pond; however, I did need the knowledge to maintain an existing pond, and this book fit the bill perfectly.

    It covers:
    * Water quality - the nitrogen cycle and what tests you need to perform
    * Filtration - types of filters, filter media, cleaning filters
    * Algae and plants - types of plants and how to grow them, how to contain algae
    * Fish - the different types of fish suitable for a pond and how to diagnose problems
    * Pond cleaning - when and how to clean the pond
    * Seasonal maintenance. - fall and winter preparations

Also this book is illustrated with many full color pictures so you can see clearly what the author is talking about.

  3. I used Interpet Products available from my local garden centre and I decided to check out some of the books advertised with their products and so ordered the "Your Healthy Garden Pond".
I have read this book and found it a very useful reference, easy to read and with good illustrations. I would recommend it to anyone with a small garden pond.

  4. This gem of a book contains all the information a new pond owner needs to maintain a healthy, happy water feature. It's very readable, well-organized, and succinct.

  1. I'm a trained archaeologist and worked in the field for many years. I learned much from this book, including some things that I had never even imagined. Well done -- easy to read.

  1. I didn't expect this book to be the beautiful publication that is is. I read a very favorable review of the book in local paper, so I decided to buy a copy for myself. I was very surprised by the editorial quality of the book. I am bilingual and the writers of this book are top notch, in both languages. The book is in english and spanish, which I love because I know both languages. The photographs are really stunning, and give some remodeling ideas as well. In fact I recently moved into a new home and I use some design ideas from the book! I loved reading the projects about the interior designers in this 2000 version of the "Design" series coffeetable books. I am sure that if you purchase this book, you'll be very happy with your purchase. According to the book, there is a DESIGN 2001 coming later this year, along with an ART 2001 book as well. I look forward to these releases with great anticipation. Meanwhile this book replaces my previous home design book on my coffeetable.

  2. Where was this book published? That is what I was asking myself after seeing this book at a local bookstore. As an avid collector of interior design/architecture books, I was stunned to see the quality of the photographs in the pages of the book. Some of the designers I have never heard of, but others are very respected individuals in their profession. I initially thought the $45 was a bit steep, but after owning and enjoying this book for the last couple months, I must say it is a very worthy purchase. Even the Design Diva Perla Lichi is in this book! Buy it, you won't be disapointed.

1 comments about Local Attachments: The Making of an American Urban Neighborhood, 1850 to 1920 (Creating the North American Landscape).
  1. While academic in its approach, von Hoffman tells the colorful story of Boston's political landscape -- shifting away from the independent neighborhoods toward the centralized city government. Von Hoffman focuses on the growth of Jamaica Plain, a city neighborhood which began as a group of country estates on rural Jamaica Pond and transformed by the late 1800s into a dense, vibrant streetcar suburb surrounded by the lush parkland of Frederick Law Olmstead's Emerald Necklace. Most fascinating are the chapters on neighborhood society and the struggle over the construction of the Emerald Necklace. The author ends his analysis in the 1920s, leaving the abandonment of the neighborhood and its late-century revival into a dynamic, ethnicly diverse, family-friendly city neighborhood for a later book. This text is used by Von Hoffman in the class he teaches at Harvard University.

1 comments about The Garden As an Art.
  1. In this book Miller challenges contemporary aesthetic theory to include gardens in an expanded definition of art. She provides a radical critique of three central tenets within current intellectual debate: first, the art historical notion that art should only be studied within the context of a single culture and period; second, the philosophical belief that art should be conceived as a discrete object unrelated to our survival as persons, as cultural communities, as a species; and third, the notion that all signifying systems are like language.

1 comments about Dan Kiley: The Complete Works of America's Master Landscape Architect.
  1. Not being that well versed in Kiley-ism, or even being that familiar with his legacy, this book may or may not be an accurate representation. But there is no doubt that this book is an excellent source of inspiration for pulling oneself out of the mundane, everyday rut and realizing that the truly fabulous is possible, and not so out of reach. EXCELLENT photography, and a skillful narrative combined with some of Kiley's sketches, make this a textbook (of sorts) in spite of the ineveitable inclination to place it on a coffee table. Oh, go ahead and buy it. You'll use it.
