  1. This is a handy book for the beginning gardener. You get planting, watering, and fertilizing tips on 14 herbs, 26 veggies, and 10 fruits that grow fairly well in Georgia. The pictures are nice, and the planting tips are, for the most part, accurate. I took issue with some of the entries, though. For example, the section on apples failed to discuss some of the better varieties now on the market, and the section on asparagus failed to discuss how seriously you need to amend the soil to get a decent crop. The info in this book is about what you'd get on the backs of good seed packets, without having to buy the seeds. If you are a veteran gardener or are looking for in-depth discussions, this book is not for you.

  1. Beginner's Guide to Herb Gardening is pretty good but it could have been better but the first part of the book was wounderful...the designs for gardens i thought had wounderful photographs and good instructions for constructing them. But i believe it lacked real gardening information and i just started gardening last spring so i was looking for something to really help a novice, sorry but i did not find that. Though i give 5 stars for the photography.WOUNDERFUL!

5 comments about The Wicca Garden: A Modern Witch's Book of Magickal and Enchanted Herbs and Plants (Citadel Library of the Mystic Arts).
  1. I always enjoy reading books by Gerina Dunwich. I hope she enjoys what she does, and doesn't write just for the money. The Wicca Garden is a great book, but Dunwich should have put more ways to use herbs in healing and perhaps spells and rituals involving herbs. I'm now actually somewhat surprised she didn't. Her chapter on growing herbs is good and I enjoyed her chapter on Herbs of the Enchanted World, all the folklore involving fairies was quite interesting and reminded me of a time centuries ago. This book, like many of Dunwich's, is a large list. Lists of everything. Don't get me wrong though, this books makes an excellent reference guide that I have referred to several times. Yes, if you are interested in herbs, please look for this book and hurry, it's out of print. Thanks. Bye.

  2. I HIGHLY recommend this well-written and informative book to all Witches and anyone looking for information on the folklore and magickal application of herbs. The author, a practicing Witch, includes many areas of herbalism that many other books don't (such as mind-expanding plants, herbal poisons, and other such "taboo" subjects) and there is an excellent section devoted to the mandrake, "the most magickal of all plants and herbs." Gardening, healing, and divination are also covered in this modern Witch's book of enchanted herbs and plants, and a helpful glossary of herbalism terms is included at the back of the book.

  3. This book does make a good addition to a reference library as there is a lot covered. A plus is plant associations for other pantheons besides Roman and Greek. However I didn't find it logically laid out and there are long paragraphs that would have better served the reader in grid format. I also found too much mythology and old wives tales mixed in with the really helpful bits. There are chapters dedicated to these topics so it could have been better organized. Still, there is enough useful information to make it worthwhile as long as you are willing to spend a little extra time looking for it.

  4. This was my first book on Wicca and it was very informative.
I have successfully grown many herbs with the help of this
book, Thank-you Gerina Dunwich. T. Shields

  5. Book of magickal herbs and plants - the subtitle tells all. And although my purpose is different (I want to plan and plant a garden is such a way that it magickally protects the house and enhances lives of its inhabitants), which this book did not entirely fulfil, it is informative and covers a lot in its not so large format. It covers some basics of planting, fertilizing etc in section on herb gardening, lists and describes properties of magickal herbs, has a section on plants associated with fairies / elementals, section onn green healing, mind altering plants, dangerous plants, herb omens and supersticions, divinatory herbs and a very useful glossary. I agree with one of previous reviewers that good info is somehow lost in the rest. Good book thou, happy to have it

  3. I have bought various books of this subject matter and this book is not that good, it does not give detail instructions on the prayers that have to be said. It does not give enough things to do for love, it is too complicated when it talks about preparation of the talismans and mojo-bags, I think that the Karen lara books are better and more detailed. Please don't buy this book, look for other authors.

    Gracias

  1. This book is one of the very best field guides to medicinal herbs. A must have for serious herbalists of all levels. The photos are absolutely spectacular! The one flaw: the book is not easy to use as an identifier unless you are pretty sure of what the plants name is already, because the book is organized by name mainly. But, if you know the name of the plant you are looking for then there is no better book. Email the publisher telling them to reorganize this book so that it is more versatile as a field guide. The planet needs this book. I'm serious, it's that good.

  2. If you are curious about growing herbs, or already grow herbs and are interested in expanding your garden or your knowledge about these plants, this is the ONE book to buy. Gorgeous color photographs identify each herb (dozens upon dozens are listed) in its seed, flowering, and leafy stages -- popular varieties of herbs are included as well. Herbs are also listed accourding to use -- culinary, cosmetic, medicinal, decorative. Also included are step-by-step instructions for infusions, decoctions, and other herbal recipes. This book may not show you how to landscape your garden (try American Horticultural's Herb Gardens book) but aside from this, this will be your herb Bible.

  3. This well-produced book has lots of small illustrations reminiscent of a field guide. It includes lots of varieties for each herb type - 17 kinds of thyme, for instance. Not very much detail on medicinal uses, and you won't find really exotic species like gotu kola. It is a small book, and packs in lots of information for its size. Information on cultivation is condensed but adequate.

  4. I am very interested in medicinal herbs, and I wanted to know more about them. I know from experience that DK and Eyewitness handbooks are wonderful, so I checked this book out from the library, and it was so good that I ended up buying it.
The pictures are very clear, and aren't too small, as with some guide books. The text is detailed enough to tell you how to use the plant, but concise enough not to limit the number of plant species included. If you want to know more about herbs, whether for cooking or medicine, this book is essential!

  5. Do not hestitate to buy this book. This is a great treatment of more than 700 herbs from around the world. The indexing and helps are excellent and the picture/plates are also the best.

DK Publishing has another superb title with this one and this establishes their guidebooks as A-1 in my book always.

5 comments about Brother Cadfael's Herb Garden: An Illustrated Companion to Medieval Plants and Their Uses.
  1. I believe that this book is much more of a picture book than anything else. Within the text, it describes Brother Cadfeal more than it does his gardens or how he planned them or used them. This book is nicely done but it is not worth the price if you are looking for a comprehensive reference for how to grow and use herbs. Please look somewhere else. There are many out there which hold better information.

  2. Not only is this gorgeous books with excellent pictures of plants, it shows a deep insight into Brother Cadfael's herbarium and his respect for plants. I loved the excerpts from the many Brother Cadfael books. I would have liked to have seen a bit more on the layout of Brother Cadfael's garden and perhaps some recipes and potions. Still the authors produced a beautiful book at a reasonable price with the pages crammed with in-depth information on herbs.

  3. This is most useful as a guide to Elis Peters' novels. The index of plants is oriented toward the fictional Cadfael and his uses, rather than to mediaval practice.

The pictures are coffee table book quality.

A must for gardeners who are Brother Cadfael fans, or Cadfael fans who are gardeners, but not a serious work.

  4. This book is a joy-containing not only the facts about the Medieval herbs and plants-but also charming references to the amazing character of Cadfael.

Don't be put off by negative comments-this book's a gem.

  5. Brother Cadfael's Herb Garden: An Illustrated Companion to Medieval Plants and Their Uses

Don't be put off by negative reviews; in addition to being a gorgeous picture book, this volume is also a treasure trove of useful information on the medicinal and culinary uses of herbs. A wonderful introduction gives a history of herbs and gardens of the twelfth century, then the chapters go into detail about monastic gardens, Brother Cadfael's herbal kingdom and the superb A to Z index of the known herbs of the period.

Interspersed with the text are gorgeous photos of Wales, herbs, methods of storing them and much more. Also in sidebars we get a glimpse of related herbal lore straight from the pages of Ellis Peters' wonderful Cadfael Chronicles. What could be more wonderful for the Medievalist or Cadfael afficionado?

    Highly recommended.

2 comments about The Medicinal Garden: How to Grow and Use Your Own Medicinal Herbs.
  1. The Medicinal Garden is a great book for anyone who is interested in growing their own herbs for healing. It covers everything from how and where to plant, when to harvest, how to dry herbs and the book gives some interesting explanations of the latin names of the herbs. Also covered are the ailments that each herb helps, any dangers of the herbs, how to prepare teas, syrups, creams, compresses etc., and how to store them.

  2. I have not been unsatisfied by this book. It makes you want to read it. I have frequently fallen into mesmerizing information. If you are interested in growing your own herbs and using them, this is your book.

Truly, it is a new world of discovery. If you are unable to find or grow certain herbs, surprisingly there are many others given that could take its place. I was fascinated to find that there was so much overlap in the uses of plants. But then again, I didn't major in Horticulture. Whatever you majored in, this book will definitely catch you up on herbs and their various uses.

I may have to buy another copy in a few years because mine will soon look 100 years old from extensive use.

    Happy Growing!!!
