1 comments about Grasses and Bamboos.
  1. This is a pretty little book with great pictures and some very usable ideas for how to get started with grasses and bamboos in the garden. (Started, here, is the operative word.) All the photos are well labeled and there is an OK plant directory in the back. HOWEVER... If you have much experience or knowledge of grasses and bamboos, this book will be quite disappointing. It's more like an expanded horticultal magazine article. It attempts to cover too much ground, but would serve as a nice introduction for someone who wants to get a feel for what's available. Those looking for more in-depth resource material should try John Greenlee's 'The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses' (Rodale Press, 1992), and 'Bamboos' by Christine Recht (Timber Press, 1992).

5 comments about Papermaking with Plants: Creative Recipes and Projects Using Herbs, Flowers, Grasses, and Leaves.
  1. As a beginner papermaker interested in working with plant fibers, this book fulfills most of my papermaking needs: clear, concise instructions and illustrations; some good basic recipes; and great ideas to get the creative juices flowing. All this in a beautiful book that is also an interesting read.

  2. I always wanted to make paper. However, the idea of making paper out of paper, seems idiotic to me. Then I found this book. It's everything I ever wanted. I recommend it for anyone. I would also make a great gift.

  3. This book guids you through the magical world of plants and paper...Using it is an excellent way to learn papermaking, loving it and understanding plants and their formation. It is an excellent guide for those who love paper and its art.CONGRADULATIONS !

  4. This is a must have book for anyone who wants to make paper from plants. It is packed with information not found elsewhere. The full-color illustrations & step-by-step instructions guide you seamlessly through the papermaking process.

The author starts out by explaining the many kinds of plant fibers and how to find, harvest and store them. All equipment needed is detailed next. Processing the fiber including cooking, beating, and retting is then covered.

Using dyes & additives as well as making your own is also discussed. Both Japanese and western sheet formation are then covered. Instructions are included for making your own paper press, mold & deckle and high-tech drying box.

Many recipes including mulberry, rose-of-sharon, & seaweed follow. Several projects including vegetable papyrus & shaped envelopes are next. A chart with many fibers listed by type can be used to make additional paper types.

  5. I am really apreciative about my purchase. Happy new year to you and
    good luck. Thank you.

  1. This book offers a fine overview on grasses and is particulaly strong in the range and quality of the photos. If you have trouble choosing or identifying grasses from descriptions or line drawings this book will help enormously. My particular interest is the bamboos. There are photos of bamboos not often seen in this country (USA). The photos make the book a valuable addition to the books available on bamboo. But the text dealing with bamboo has many errors, surprising with an author with Roger Ground's experience. The book is published in this country by Timber Press and in the UK by David & Charles Publishers but is clearly a UK book reworked for the US market.

1 comments about Guide to Grasses of Southern Africa.
  1. The organisation of the book is logical, based on inflorescence types, making it easy to jump to the appropriate section. My main issue with the book is the inconsistency in detail between species, e.g. for one species there will be plenty of description of the leaves and for the next species no mention of leaves at all! This makes for difficult comparisons when trying to decide between two species. Still, from what I've been told by South Africans, this is the most comprehensive guide out there. Even with my completely novice skills (regarding grasses AND the region), I was quite comfortable using this book and confidently indentifying a number of grass species or genuses.

  1. This is a great book for a novice on ornamental grasses. The pictures are great. Many suggestions for combinations of plants. All the obligatory information on zones, latin names, growing conditions, etc. are included but not in a technically overpowering manner. I purchased it for myself and am now buying it as a gift. I wouldn't give mine up!

  1. I was so pleased to find this book. I am a beginning gardener, and I wanted to find out about all kinds of landscaping ideas and plants. This book has beautiful color photos of different ornamental grasses and groundcovers, one area I am interested in. It also includes a detailed description of each, and important information about climate, growing guidelines, height, and spread. Armed with the information in this book, I can now visit my local garden center knowing exactly what I want for my yard.

This book is especially attractive to me because of the way in which the material is presented. It is easy to browse and appealing to the eye. I found myself sitting for hours looking through the book to determine what types of grasses and groundcovers appealed to me the most. I have not found any other garden books which present their material in such a user-friendly manner. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in starting or enhancing their garden and landscape.
