5 comments about The Cannabis Grow Bible: The Definitive Guide to Growing Marijuana for Recreational and Medical Use.
  1. I've been writing about cannabis for years now and thought I should find out what's going on with cultivation. I do not have a green thumb and I've never really grown anything more complicated than a tomato. What I like about this book is the realistic appraisal of all the challenges related to cultivation. The details about coaxing the plant into existence are splendid. So many growing guides, websites, and magazine articles imply that the process is relatively effortless. It is not. Even when cannabis is re-legalized, I can see that this task is beyond me.

I was particularly struck by all the outrageous hassles that have nothing to do with the plant and everything to do with prohibition. Big sections on security, sea of green growing to keep the number of plants to a minimum, carbon filters for preventing the detection of odors...It's insane. I love that growers have shown such ingenuity and skill, but can't help wondering what they could have done to improve the plant itself if they hadn't spent all this time and energy on secrecy.

Users should read this book simply to further their appreciation of the plant and the cultivators. The book should also get them motivated to work for the repeal of prohibition because each section makes it obvious that cannabis could be better and cheaper if these horticulturists could devote their time to more important matters than avoiding detection.

Non-users should at least thumb through this book. If they can understand that cultivators are willing to endure the ridiculous irritations that prohibition creates, they will know that any attempt to legislate this plant out of existence is doomed to failure.

  2. The book has easy to understand, in-depth information. Chapter 18, "Important Cannabis Issues", is a must read for the Entire world!

  3. Whaazup!? Is it 4:20 already? Time to wake and bake!

Being a young man with an abusive atheist father and a mom that ran out on me when I was 3, I have always had this huge void in my life. When I was a pup I would fill this void by stealing things and engaging in the destruction of other people's property!

In middle school I got violent. I would pick on the kids that were smaller then me and I was always getting into fights with the big-wigs of the school. I even hit a teacher once, dat bxxitch just wouldn't leave me alone about that homework!

That's all in the past though. Some of the other poverty-stricken kids that went to my school turned me onto this holy sacrament. It's been all good since then. Whenever I get sad about how horrible my life is, all I gotta do is sit back and puff.

Yeah, so that's where this book comes in. The more you toke, the more you're broke, hehe, yeah. So I got this book so I could grow my own private stash. The book told me everything I needed to know about growing wacky weed.

Unfortunately what it didn't tell me was that growing it was a crime! I am doin some time right now, but I'll make parole soon. I can't wait to get out and partake of sweet Mary Jane again though. Hey, puff puff give! Can I come over to you guys's place when I get out? Please?

  4. A truely excellent product. Don't let the title decieve you, the cannabis grow bible has plenty of information about other topics regarding cannabis such as the legalization debate. In the middle of the book are some vivid color photos on photo quality paper, another plus. This is the only book about cannabis you will ever need!

  5. This book was a great find! It has more information than pictures which is okay, it is very descript in its information and easy to read. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to further their knowlegde in this art.

5 comments about Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots: Gardening Together with Children.
  1. With lyrical watercolors this lively text explains how to create 12 child-friendly theme gardens, including both a moon garden and a pizza garden. I simply had to buy this book, because even though I'm not gardening with children, I enjoy dreaming up and planting fun theme gardens.
I included this book in my article "25 Best Books For Hobby Farmers", in the November/December 2006 issue of Hobby Farms magazine.

  2. I bought both books. Roots,Shoots,Buckets & Boots, and Sunflower Houses. They are not the same! There are a couple of similar items, but both worth having and different. Sunflower houses shows how to make leaf hats and flower crowns, screechers, boats, pansy dolls, and much much more. The first book (roots, shoots,..) shows more creative gardening and hideouts and things like pizza patches sunflower hideouts and flower mazes. They both teach how to make hollyhock dolls. I recommend both. But if you only want one, get the roots, shoots, buckets and boots. However dont pass up the chance later on to get Sunflower Houses. Enjoy!!!

  3. All I wanted to say has already been said. I just wanted to add my 5 stars. I got a copy of this book last Spring, and it has been well loved. I was very excited that we were able to dig it out again for this year. To much cool stuff!

  4. This is an excellent book for 3-10 year old children who show an interesting in gardening. It will motivate them to explore gardening and to enjoy it!

  5. Again a great book for gardening with kids. For example a sunflower house, pizza garden, a garden of giants, and a water garden. The neat thing is that you spend time gardening with your children and the kids get to enjoy playing in what they have grown.

  1. Excellent coverage of garden plants. Concise encyclopedia for basic information. In latin order; common names on the back of the book. Very good investment.

  2. The A-Z Encyclopdia of Garden Plants has been the most outstanding plant Bible that I have ever used. I manage a Garden Center for a top retail company. This company brought in this book for reference purposes. We use this book on a daily basis. That it why I call it a Plant Bible. We have learned so much. I could not stand it anymore so I now have one of my own at home. OUTSTANDING !!!

  3. I bought this book several years ago and have since given away literally boxes of other gardening books. This is very concise. If I need further information about a particular plant the internet is always available. The book is big and heavy but this book is a literal A-Z of gardening and worth EVERY penny you pay for it. I highly recommend for ALL gardeners.

  4. An illustrated, complete book of garden plants. Offers great information for the advanced as well as the novice gardener. One negative aspect is it's size and weight. Very cumbersome to handle which is not conducive to longevity of the spine of the book. Would have been better published in two volumes.

  5. I have been through my book, cover to cover twice so far and the second time through I found plants I thought were missing the first time and both were in photographings of said plants. It(the book) has helped me tremendously as a Master Gardener in selecting plants to propagate wisely for the community butterfly gardens I am now planting from the plants that I have grown from seeds or cuttings at least 90%. The other few were from wise purchases. We(mastergardeners) keep this bible in the shelves to assist the Master Gardener answering the "hotline" with questions about any kind of plants or problems people in Polk County, Fl have to ask our help in solving. I will probably be getting one on propagation to complete my needs and if one for Florida exists, it will be one that I review! I bought the encyclopedia so I could have it at home for personal refrence.

  1. I thought this book would give me resources to purchasing seeds to grow. It just tells you how to grow them. If you are a gardener you dont need this book.

  2. INFORMATIVE BOOK A GREAT STARTER BOOK GIVES THE BASICS OF ALL BREWING HERBS AND GRAINS INCLUDING HOPS RECCOMEND READING

  3. I bought this book looking for a guide to grow hops... It is certainly that, and more. It covers varieties and where they grow, how to treat the soil, where to plant, what how to build an effective trellis etc... AND it covers how to dry the fresh hops in preparation for use in a brew... how to build an oast (which is the drying structure)... And it does all of this in a very approachable way.

Bonus for me - was that it covers the same for the cultivation, harvest, and treatment (malting and drying) of barley ... And has a nice run-down of brewing herbs and their uses (how much of what herb to use in the brew - and when to add it)...

Just noticed - the cover says:

How to easily grow prepare, and use your own Hops, Malts, and Brewing Herbs

    yeah ... that's about right. ;)
    Inspiring.

  4. I bought this book for the Hop part I am a home brewer and the Hop shortage worried me, I bought a house last summer, and I have a spot that I can use for growing hops, I bought this book and others, this one has the layout well wrote, it is a clear cut information book, I have no gardening experience, and this book helped me in setting up my hops, and maintain then they are about a foot long now and healthy, the other parts of the book grain, and herb is also nice , it makes me want to grow my herb and grain... this book is the only one you need to grow hops....and I sure other product in it.

  5. Great book. Lots of useful info. Seller got it to me in a quick mannor and in great condition.

  1. Great for the beginner gardener, it's easy to understand and gives a lot of information on planning your perrennial gardens to look great from early spring right into the fall.

  2. Keep this book on your counter all spring and summer long - you'll find lots of reasons to refer to it.

  3. My wife wore out her 1st copy and the yard looks great.

  4. I am really enjoying this book. It has given me a lot of good ideas for my garden this summer. I already have some of the flowers it lists, and I agree they are winners. An excellent book for beginning and experienced gardeners looking for new flowers for their yard.

  5. This is a well organized and colorful book that is good for the first time gardener as well as the seasoned veteran. Attractive pictures pull the reader into the page, then concise, helpful information is readily available.

  1. I was in search of a way to take care of my gardens, grass etc. with less toxic chemicals. Jerry Baker's books were just what I was looking for. I started in the fall with dethatching and aeriating my lawn. I plan to use this book as my bible for my lawn this season. This book will take me through the summer, into winter, and then back to spring. Since I have not used the suggestions in this book for a full year, I can't testify to the results. But I am excited to give all the tonics a try.

  2. This book is great for the homeowner who likes a nice yard. Easy solutions to treat any lawn issue.

  3. I had this book in hardback and lent it to a friend...I never got it back.....so I got another one. It is wonderful. A great reference for lawn care. There are somethings that I don't do but I have loved all the tips and tonics that he has. They really do help my lawn.

  4. I have used the recommended schedule that Jerry suggests and my grass is thick and healthy. His recipes use items that are easily found in any store or around your home and don't cost a fortune. I am looking forward to seeing how my grass will fare throughout the summer. I am sure my neighbors are quite envious and can't figure why my grass is so GREEN. :-)

  5. The product arrived promptly at my door in top condition following "one click" on my computer screen... which is just a hard to beat arrangement... Thanks Amazon

  1. I love the full color pictures - it gave me all sorts of ideas. I just wished there were a few more pages on "How to do it" I'd recommend this book though for the price - it was awesome.

  2. Beautiful book, well put together, LOTS of pictures. I especially liked the way the author covered different styles of stonework. I'm not a fan of very formal design and he included examples of more informal, earthy landscaping.

  3. What beautiful and innovative designs this book has. My husband and I wanted to landscape much of our property with stone. We actually did more than planned because we were so impressed by much of the ideas in this book. A concern of ours was the price. Much of the simpler projects you find you can do yourself (such as the small retaining wall around the garden), which saved on additional labor costs. We were guided which stones to use, and stones that could be found around the property. For the work that was a bit more extensive we called in a professional and showed him from the book what we wanted. He was very much impressed with this book himself.

  4. Pick this up if you are always at Menards, Home depot, or you just like to play with rocks, on a friday night. It did occur to me after I read this, that my friends may think that I am wierd, because I read a book about rocks and how to place rocks, all on a...you guessed it...FRIDAY NIGHT! LOL! I am not cool!

  5. From single stone placements to walkways, patios and garden rooms, this book will provide you with endless ideas and inspiration. The instructions are thorough yet easy to follow. A must for a resplendent garden!

  1. The book was a delight, and I enjoy reading it over and over. The gorgeous illustrations are a joy. Tasha has done exactly what she wanted to do in life...spend it simply, and creatively. She is such an inspiration, that I've bought several of her other books, as well as one of her videos, "Take Joy."

  2. I bought a Tasha Tudor print for my daughter's birthday and ordered this book to go with it. It came just in time.

  3. If we could all live in a fantasy world this book would probaly be more meaningful. Got this book as a garden/back to nature resource. Not for people who have to balance their families, work and of course money. Skip unless you are an absolute Tasha Tudor fan.

  4. I love this book. I saw her in Victoria magazine years ago, and then again in a bookstore, and finally ordered it on Amazon and read it from front to back in 2 days. I could not put this down. This amazing lady is living life as She wants to live it. This will transport you to a more gentler time, slower than today's crazy pace. You'll be inspired to live up to your own dreams. I love seasons, but I happen to live in a place where we don't have them, this book has enabled me to enjoy them when I need to. Her home and gardens are very inspiring and the photo's are great.

  5. Beautiful book about a very interesting person and shows her lovely artwork. Love Vermont and the photographs were wonderful. Gave it as a gift to my daughter, who was very pleased.

5 comments about Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening: The Indispensable Resource for Every Gardener.
  1. This book is so bland and boring it is nearly generic. If you are at all excited by the prospect of things organic, don't buy this book. Look for something with juices flowing in the veins or you will find yourself semi-comatose and bored with organic before you begin.

This book could have been more than just a [quite generalized] reference book. It could have been an inspiration. Fortunately it's recyclable.

  2. This book was recommended by a friend and it is exceptionally informative and well written. I would recommend it to anyone seeking more info on organic gardening. It has ideas that are cheap to do that work wonderfully!

  3. Chock full of useful information! This is probably the only book on gardening you'll ever need! I can't believe how informative this is! It truly is an Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening! Whatever your question or plant you are sure to find it here! This is a must have for any organic gardener!

  4. I use this book so often. I have several gardening books about specific topics such as soil or companion planting or planting or pruning.. it's good to have specific books but this one has it all as a great general reference. I always check this out in addition to whatever other resource I am using. It is so comprehensive!

  5. This is a great book, very informative whether you have just one potted plant or an acre of garden blooming in your backyard. It touches on just about any topic imaginable, including composting, rose care, types of garden pests and how to deter them, and tips on growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs. The information easy to understand and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book, and it would make a great gift for anyone aspiring to have a green thumb.

  1. Native California plants have their own way of showing natutual beauty. This book catches the spirit of these plants. Would like to see more closeup pictures so that I can learn to identify them.

  2. As I've finally come to terms with the fact that an English garden just won't flourish in Los Angeles, this book has replaced my sadness with optimism. I don't know a lot about plants, and I've found this book an invaluable resource as I set about my plans to completely revamp my garden.

  3. I bought this book several weeks ago and am very happy with it! Lots of helpful and useful information...and great photos too. This book is definitely a great resource if you are interested in landscaping with California native plants.

  4. This is one of two must have books if you are interested in gardening with native California plants. This book is definitely the 'guidebook' half of that collection (the other being Designing California Native Gardens). It does an excellent job of getting you acquainted with all the different plants you may be wanting to bring into your garden, and in giving you actual photographs of the plants! One giant peeve of mine in gardening books and guidebooks is the use of hand done illustrations- in other contexts they are charming but you really can't get a feel for a plant unless you are looking at its' actual picture. It just gives you a much better feeling for the plant- the texture of it's leaves, the weediness of its' growth habit, that kind of thing. This is a book you will find yourself using as a reference again and again. Five stars are given enthusiastically.

  5. A beautifully written and edited book that is a must have for the avid gardener. Possibly the 'Bible' of California native plants. I keep it close by for reference or when heading out to do my buying.
