- This is one of the best books ever written on fruit trees, berries, nut trees, grapes, etc. for the Western US. As a Master Gardener I reference it constantly. It doesn't use the standard USDA 10 zones, but a much more specific 19. Each type of fruit has its own chapter, with information on rootstock, fruiting date per variety, pruning type, mature size, and so forth. Their variety charts show name, zones, best features and shortcomings for each variety and an extensive narrative. It also contains chapters on grafting, subtropicals, container grown trees, pests and diseases, custom propagation and fruit growing in small areas. Written for the novice, it is outstanding in all respects.
