1 comments about Primula.
- John Richards monograph on the genus Primula is the best book I have seen on the subject. I work with primroses every day and it would be much more difficult without this clarifying volume. The theoretical background is sound, the disposition is easy to follow and the illustrations are both informative and pleasing to the eye.

1 comments about The Essential Rose Garden.
- This is a really terrific book for the rose lover just starting their rose bed. Beautiful pictures and interesting rose history make this perfect for the coffee table, while the growing tips make it an invaluable tool for growing beautiful roses. Far too many rose books are written in a language that only a horticulturist can understand. This book gives clear instructions on planting, potting, pruning and feeding roses as well as excellent pictures and advice for identifying problems such as black spot, replant disease and powdery mildew.
This is truely the Essential Rose book!

1 comments about Annuals and Perennials (Sunset Book).
- This is an excellent book for anyone who is new to gardening and wanting a simple place to start. It has pictures and placement of perennials, grasses and annuals that you can find locally or use the chart at the back of the book which lists several reputable dealers. It also has instructions on where to place your plants and how to maintain them. The best part is there are several garden plans that I tried and my yard looks amazing!

5 comments about Growing Profits: How to Start and Operate a Backyard Nursery.
- Here's their back cover blurb: "Learn how to start a nursery in your backyard with virtually no capitual investment. In an area of only 1,000 sq. ft. it is possible to generate over $5,000 worth of plants in a single growing season."
The 207 page book delivers on its promise. The book is particularly good in explaining the value of "time" in the nursery business. If you expect to make money with your greenhouse... or with a nursery business, this is an EXCELLENT book to get. It's easy to read and contains lots of money-making ideas. Here's a way to get that greenhouse by your spouse... "look at the extra money we can make!" If you have teenage children, this is a great way for them to earn extra money. If you're a business man, I think there you can make more money with less work in other ways. But hey, it's fun. The book is oriented to growing flowers and shrubs... and not so much for growing vegetables. Although growing herbs is one of the things recommended. They deliver on describing how to make $5,000 in only 1,000 sq. ft. The most important thing this book delivers is the core thinking process that a nurseryman must analyze in terms of time, and profit per unit of time. I didn't realize this was so important, but now it makes sense to me.
- Only one paragraph on greenhouses, no wonder he only can make a few thousand. You really need a greenhouse to grow your starts in this business and to have only a little on this subject tells me alot..( he never made it big) There is no mention of caring for the enviorment here, The use of posins are recomended and no real overall plan for runoff or water table poulution, guess he doesn't care. Any way if you got extra bucks, get it cause one good idea can be worth the price.
- This book is a well written, concise basic introduction to the subject. The book helps the beginning businessman stay out of legal trouble by providing information on licenses, taxes, and zoning codes. Different operating options are provided as well as plant care and equipment requirements.
- This book is simply incredible!! It will litteraly point you in the right direction from the beginning and tell you what to ask when you get to where you are going on you nursery business venture. This book breaks down figures and estimates, hint's and tips.. . and much much more. If you want to start a nursery and even think that you might still be a beginner..buy this book it's worth its weight in gold.
- I loved this book. It's small compared to a lot of other books but it isn't short in material. It gives great information on what to grow, what size pots to use and marketing. You don't have to have a large piece of land to start growing and selling something. If you are interested in started a small nursery this is the book for you.

5 comments about Perennials For Every Purpose: Choose the Plants You Need for Your Conditions, Your Garden, and Your Taste.
- Canadian garden writer and lecturer Hodgson is true to his book's title, covering quite a lot of ground in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Preliminary chapters cover the basics such as getting started, creating a design, and keeping plants healthy. The highlight, however, is the 14 chapters that profile perennials that can be used in unique situations (e.g., dry, wet, sunny, shade, easy-care). Each plant profile includes a photograph, a sidebar listing plant characteristics, and informative paragraphs detailing good companion plants, problems and solutions, and the top performers and recommended varieties for each plant. Other "extras" include a beautiful section of seven garden designs, a glossary of the meanings of botanical names, plant sources, and the American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map.
- Although I have many books on gardening and perennials, this one is my absolute favorite. It's a wonderful resource for selecting, planting, and propagating hundreds of different perennials. Each plant is fully described on two pages with gorgeous photography. I especially like the "Plant Profile" section which offers a thumbnail description of color, size, hardiness, and several other factors. This enables the reader to instantly determine whether a particular plant will work in a given space. I also like the author's notes on "Problems and Solutions" for each plant. His blunt, honest, and humorous comments have saved me from planting beautiful, but migraine-inducing, flowers. A great reference and fun to read.
- For anyone living in the Northern part of the US or Canada, this book is a must. I especially appreciated the honest if opiniated descriptions of the strenghts and weaknesses of each plants. Care and propagation is also sensibly put forth, all the emphasis given to the concerns of the gardeners in zone 5, 4 and even 3.
- It is simply the best book on the market if you are looking for a book on Perennials ONLY.
- This book is my absolute favorite gardening book. Author includes a warning on those plants that can be overbearing. A great gift book for the beginning or seasoned gardener.
