1 comments about Timber Press Pocket Guide to Palms (Timber Press Pocket Guides).
  1. Palm Trees can be found on every continent except Antarctica - and it isn't because of the cold that they aren't there. "Timber Press Pocket Guide to Palms" is a comprehensive look at this enigmatic tree, so often ignored as simply a decoration for tropical islands when it really is a resilient plant that can grow in extreme temperatures as low as five degrees Fahrenheit. The guide covers everything one would possibly need to know to grow over two hundred of the common palm species. Enhanced with over three hundred color photographs and appendixes, this information packed guide is highly recommended for community library collections on plant life and for anyone who seeks to grow a palm themselves.

3 comments about Timber Press Pocket Guide to Hostas (Timber Press Pocket Guides).
  1. This is another in the continuing series of Pocket Guides being published by Timber Press, more or less based on TP's comprehensive collection of authoritative books on a wide variety of gardening and horticultural subjects.

This volume, stemming from Diana Grenfell and Michael Shadrack's classic reference tome published in 2004, "The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas," will appeal to all gardeners and nursery people interested in hostas and want to know more about them.

In addition to being up to date with the inclusion of over 70 new introductions, it lists the tried and tested classic hostas enjoyed in numerous large and small gardens in North America and Europe.

Easy to carry around, the small volume is packed with information on cultural details, pest control and landscaping ideas. There are also succinct sections on history, botany and what to look for when purchasing hostas, an excellent index and a quick reference at the beginning on choosing hostas for different sites and climatic conditions.

The photographs clearly illustrate the wide variety of textures and shades of leaf color, as well as the sumptuousness of hostas with the largest leaves. In addition, they highlight the wide variety of different shapes in which hosta leaves are available.

Highly recommended for all gardeners and nursery people; a wealth of practical information at a bargain price.

    Warren I. Pollock
    Contributing Editor
    "The Hosta Journal"

  2. This book was everything I expected based on the previous reviews I had read. You won't be disappointed!!!

    John

  3. It is a good handbook but does not contain all the important information to identify a hosta like the number of vein pairs.

5 comments about Growing Perennials in Cold Climates.
  1. This book lets you know which perennials you can buy and grow in cold climates. It is a must for anyone in the Northern Areas of 20 degree's below 0 even in Canada. It shows the pictures of the flowers and where they will grow best for cold weather. It also shows you the best variety to buy and where you can order them, plant them and how to do it. It is a must for cold weather climates.

  2. I've bought and borrowed numerous books regarding perennials. None has been so complete and well illustrated. Each plant species has varieties listed as well as planting, mulching, pruning, dividing techniques and advice. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Kudos to the authors!

  3. A passionately written book. The information is detailed yet to the point and not boring or too scientific. A great book for the cold climate novice gardener or a reference for the master.
The pictures are beautiful and plenty. The layout is clear, logical and well organized. The book's a real keeper. Great job.

  4. For those living in zone 4 or 3 - this is a fantastic all inclusive gardening book for anyone. Would highly recommend it.

  5. This is an excellent book for gardeners in USDA Zones 3b through 5b east of the 100th meridian. While one can certainly quarrel with which genera are covered, within its scope this book offers very solid advice. No similar reference offers as much breadth regarding specific cultivars. I hope the publisher will offer an expanded (including Thalictrums and Polygonatums!) and updated second edition in the near future. If you are a beginning to intermediate gardener this book is definitely worth having.

5 comments about 100 Flowers and How They Got Their Names.
  1. This is a wonderful, charming book. Each section provides an interesting anecdotal essay about the flower it covers. However, do not expect completeness (of course, there are many more than 100 flowers out there, and more than could be said about each than is possible in a page or two).

Also, don't look for consistent information about flower naming or morphology. Rather, these are very personal essays on each flower. The essays usually include some historical information that has to do with how the flower was named. At times, this format feel forced--I would have liked the author to be able to paint with a broader brush, as I sense she wanted to. And I also think that of the 100 flowers there are a few she doesn't really like that much. (Well, me too!).

These minor objections to the form of the book aside, it's really incredibly sweet, and very educational. 5 Stars plus.

  2. 100 Flowers is more of a small coffee table book than a garden guide. It's sweet and interesting. It would be a perfect gift for mother's day, the lady who babysits the cat, your nicest neighbor. I would be interested in other things the author has done or seeing her on Martha.

  3. I was a little dissapointed with this book. It was a lot smaller in size than I was expecting, and the illustrations are just black and white outlines, not color photos of each flower like I was expecting. They should call it "How 100 flowers got their names" instead.

  4. This little but informative book was a hit for my mom-in-law. She thought she knew all about flowers, but no. She was amazed at all the facts in this book. A real nice present for flower lovers.!!

  5. What a great reference book for all who love flowers. As a professional Florist, Event & Party planner in Seattle, WA, we use this book on a daily basis for customers asking quesion of flowers.

    A must have...

  1. This book is a pleasure to read and look at even if you don't do flower arranging. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing is clear and direct. I bought multiple copies and gave them to clients for holiday presents, and it was very well received.

  2. Nice book, explains various techniques used in this flower arranging art.
I liked the techniques of creating decorations using more than one vaze side by side and the ways they are connected with flowers.

2 comments about The Flower Gardener's Bible: Time-Tested Techniques, Creative Designs, and Perfect Plants for Colorful Gardens.
  1. I would highly recommend this book for the beginner through advanced. Alot of information to reference back to.

The only thing I found in Rodales Perennials for Every Purpose that I like better- is the book is setup "Plants for every season". It has the contents list in order of blooming time. ie.. Early Spring, late spring early summer, etc

Gardeners Bible- has alot of great pics, deals alot with bulbs, cuttings, transplanting. saving seeds, planting- more so than Rodales Perennials.

Conclusion: It would be tough to decide which one I like better, I think I will have to keep them both.

  2. This book was an excellent read. It is loaded with tons of information, starting out with teaching you how to identify what type of garden you have, how to get the best results out of it, and then moving on to things like planning/designing, and caring for your garden. There are also several topics that cover transplanting and starting from seeds, along with other much needed information for the gardener. The final chapter is a section that will take you through many different flowers, teaching you information about them, and how to care for them.

On a final note, I want to add that this book was very easy to comprehend, and the authors took me through the book as if they were standing in the garden with me. They share the type of wisdom and knowledge that you can only gain from very experienced gardeners who have the deepest of passions for this craft of life.
