  1. It's probably safe to call this one a classic; it's just unfortunate that it's out of print and a bit hard to find.
Peter Adams comes at the subject of bonsai from the point of view of the trained artist, and his training shows through here. His emphasis on artistic method should be a welcome antidote to the oft-found notion that bonsai is little more than keeping alive a cute little tree in a pot.
In addition, this book has a wealth of hands-on information concerning soils, horticulture and strategies for long-term development of specimens. Keep in mind that few true bonsai are created in less than a few years, even when starting with specimens that already have a well-developed trunk and roots.
Adams has a special respect for, and treatment of, collected trees -- those taken from the wild.
This is a very good how-to book with lots of examples of how individual specimens were designed and developed.
This book is perhaps a little intimidating for the beginner; a novice might be better off starting with something like Herb Gustafson's "Bonsai Workshop," which gives a better basic overview of the art form but shares Adams's project-oriented approach. Or John Naka's "Bonsai Techniques" I & II, which have a wealth of very accessible information. Or even Peter Adams's "The Art of Flowering Bonsai," which has a lot of general information on developing trees as well as species-specific information related to certain blossoming kinds.
But if you find a used copy of "Bonsai Design" somewhere, buy it. If you don't read it now, you'll want to refer to it later.

  1. This book is a useful guide to making the art of Bonsai a little easier for those of us with busy lives. It is full of useful information and good clear pictures. My only critisim is its bias towards USA conditions. Otherwise a good and useful book.

  1. This book deals mostly with miniature landscaping in an outdoor setting and is not very useful for landscaping a dollhouse. Many of the plants recommended are very difficult to find and require an outdoor location. Very few indoor plants are mentioned. It's a Great book for someone interested in outdoor gardening in miniature.

  1. I've read this book from cover to cover. I'm already on my 3rd bonzai tree. What an excellent book! You can tell the publisher and the author put alot of work into it.

    nice job

  2. I ordered this book because it sounded comprehensive and promised lots of photos. Having spent a good bit of time looking it over, I confess to very mixed feelings about it. There is a lot of excellent information inside and some very handsome bonsai portraits, but the overall subject treatment varies: sometimes Dr. Liang goes into depth, while at other times her approach remains superficial. Her section "Bonsai Creation," for instance, runs all of 4 pages (primarily photographs) and essentially recommends spending a lot of time looking at trees. Worse, I couldn't escape the sense that the book is in some regards a vanity publication. Many of the pictures focus on Dr. Liang and her trees, occasionally including family members, and very few of those pictures are instructive; they seem intended instead to show off her collection. And while the writing is generally solid, the English is at times stilted and could have used editing by someone for whom it is not a second language. Having said all that, it's not a bad book by any means and it does contain useful information. However, I recommend thinking of it as one source among many and suggest buying a used copy to save a few dollars.

  3. The book is awesome great pics good tips for almost everything its big i mean the book is really big if you like bonsai you will like this book the quality is good the book came in great condition not even a scratch i recomend it 100%

  4. There is a lot of good information, but it is mostly beginner 'common sense' bonsai information, such as how to sow seeds. Half the book contains just pictures of bonsai (beautiful, but only a small portion is dedicated to 'principles and techniques' like the title promises). I LOVED the section on miniature rock formations and a glimpse into 'suiseki' (the art of rock appreciation). A good book for a the coffee table.

  5. I received the book at the time when I expected it. It was in superb condition as promised. I will recommend this seller for anybody who do not want to be disappointed when using the net buying books.

  1. This book was well-written, and very informative for the beginner. It went over all of the basics for Bonsai care, and was even appropriate as a reference book for the intermediate Bonsai caregiver. I would recommend it for anyone who is interested in starting a Bonsai garden

  2. While the trees themselves have not changes, books have. This book is good, but there are better Bonsai books out there that are available for the beginner. Check out "The Complete Book of Bonsai" by Harry Tomlinson instead

  1. This is one of the best bonsai books. It should be in every seriuos hobbyst's library. It contains all the information needed to get started on bonsai. It has an apendix for tools, equipment and soil, and another one very helpfull, with plant names in Chinese-Japanese Characters. Yoshimora is a truly great Bonsai master. The disvantages are that the B&w photos are not of very good quality and the text can be a little tedious to read

  2. This book, beyond a doubt, has all of the information the serious bonsai artist needs to know. A friend gave me this book when I first expressed an interest in bonsai, and it succeeded in intimidating me. The authors provide very thorough details about creating bonsai, and take it to the level of science rather than art. However, it is because of this high degree of detail that I was struck with how serious the art really can be. I find it unfortunate that it is currently out of print, since it does cover bonsai in such detail. I would tend to recommend Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes to the person who is quite dedicated to pursuing the art, and would not recommend it to a person with a more casual interest.
