  1. North American gardeners who want to learn about begonias now receive all the information in Begonias, a book devoted to this one plant alone. From its history and key discoveries to its culture and propagation, Begonias packs in details on how to handle and successfully grow a variety of begonias.

  2. This is a very good, concise book covering history, cultivation, propagation and even hybridizing methods of tuberous begonias. When I purchased this book, I didn't know the difference between tuberous and non-tuberous begonias so I was a bit disappointed to discover that begonias of my primary interest, the non-tuberous type, are barely covered. This review is mostly a warning to those who might not know the difference. The focus of the book is tuberous begonias which are primarily grown for their flowers (and are well-represented by the excellent photos). The author includes a brief chapter covering the various types of non-tuberous begonias (which interest me because of their foliage) and short propagation notes. Non-tuberous begonias include varieties which are cane-like (including the "Angel Wing" varieties), thick-stemmed, rhizomatous, trailing-scandents, Rex and semperflorens (wax leaf - common bedding begonia). If you are interested in these types, you should keep searching for another book.

  1. A milestone for Begonia enthusiasts, it's a reference for the expert, and an excellent how-to for the newbee.

  2. This 200 page British entry caters mainly to the tuberous begonia grower but it also addresses the other types of begonias. It does a good job of describing the history and cultivation of each class of begonia. Although only tuberous begonias are illustrated, the descriptions of begonias are well done, giving accurate desciptions of the plants, foliage, growing habits and flowers as well as the parentage for the hybrids. Sections on Growing for Showing, Hybridizing, Propagation, Pest and Diseases, and Composts are well written. I was impressed by the overall quality of the book. Of course, I would have liked more pictures of the begonias. This book is a "keeper".

  1. This book is the ultimate reference to the genus Begonia, or is at least for the moment! Our indoor gardening association calls it "the Begonia bible" for good reason; her scholarship and research has yet to be surpassed and she documents most of the many species now in cultivation. In addition, it has a wealth of color and black and white pictures for positive identification. Well worth the search for this out-of-print gem of a resource!

  2. The definitive book on begonias, including descriptions of all classes of begonias, culture, propagating, and lots of pictures.

  3. This book is a must for serious begonia growers. It is a begonia growers bible. The Thompson's spent years compiling this now out of print book and there is nothing like it in print. It does not contain the newest varieties but the culture information and pictures make the begoniac drool with envy.

  4. This book remains the Definitive Begonia Book. The information on the culture of begonias has stood the test of time. I agree with the other comments about this being the "Begonia Bible". I find myself using it as a guide and reference time and again. A must-have for the serious begonia enthusiast. Plus, the authors' love of this wonderful plant family just shines throughout the text!
