1. This book offers ideas for selecting flowers and containers that can look beautiful in your home. Starting with basic design principles and ending with notes on flower care and conditioning, most of the book is divided into chapters by colour. With any book of this type the illustrations are the focus, and there are page after page of truly beautiful colour photographs. They make you want to rush out to the florist and spend all the grocery money on tulips or alliums.

   I spent a delightful half hour going through this book, but I wouldn't buy it - pretty pictures aside, there's just not enough substance to it.

1. This wonderful treasury of annual flowers is inspirational and gives great ideas for garden design. Although it's a small book, it's packed with great pictures and is well-organized. The sections of flower choices by color, design ideas and how-to gardening tips are all useful and nice to look at. A nice gift for novice gardeners.

1. I will buy virtually any book on roses so I don't regret buying this one. The book provides each rose a single page and photograph so its fun to just look at the pictures, annotated with the relevant stats and a short description of the rose. The author has a long association with Jackson-Perkins and Horticulture Magazine. For me, the book's shortcomings are fairly serious. Reviewing the descriptions of the roses made it immensely obvious that the author and I don't use similar criteria when identifying favorite roses. The term 'favorite' is a purely subjective term so one can't critique the author for a value judgement, nevertheless, I wouldn't let this list of favorites guide my selection of roses to plant. For example, one favorite rose had the following in the description: "Mildew and blackspot are often a problem", "It is not especially hardy" and has "slight fragrance." Another rose had "sparse growth and inhibited flower! ing when hot" while at the same time being "not super hardy". Those roses wouldn't go in my garden. Just as a nicety, I always look for a bibliography and this book had none. Cultivation was only very briefly touched on.

1. This is an excellent book for anyone who is new to gardening and wanting a simple place to start. It has pictures and placement of perennials, grasses and annuals that you can find locally or use the chart at the back of the book which lists several reputable dealers. It also has instructions on where to place your plants and how to maintain them. The best part is there are several garden plans that I tried and my yard looks amazing!

1. I loved this book! I have my first garden this year, and since I rent, I can only plant annuals. This book has tons of information about what types of plants to choose, and the different heights, several garden plans and further resources. The only thing I didn't like about it, was there was no real zoning information, except very general. Some of the plants may not grow in my area that are suggested in the book, according to a local garden center.
