- Lifelong gardener Anne Halpin draws upon her many years of experience and expertise in Annuals, Perennials & Bulbs: Designing, Planting, Maintaining to offer the home gardener and landscaper a detailed guide to creating beds and borders that will showcase these garden plants to their best advantage. Halpin provides 40 step-by-step photo sequences taking the aspiring gardening through essential gardening tasks, as well as in-depth profiles of 125 favorite garden planes, enhanced with 600 color photographs (many of them clearly illustrating essential gardening techniques) and more than 50 watercolor illustrations. 3 comments about The Complete Book of Garden Flowers.
- This book gives a lot of detailed information and superb pictures of annuals and perennials. It gives information on planting, what to expect and disease and treatment.
- Great comprehensive book of annuals, perennials and bulbs! Being a beginning gardener, I spent quite a bit of time deliberating on a choice for a general flower reference book. This book has proven its worth! There are general overviews of the three flowering categories, explaining how to integrate them into a well-planned garden. There are pages and pages of lavish photographs of individual varieties with info presented in a concise, reader-friendly format. Garden-store tags are often woefully incomplete, so this has been invaluable to me for getting the full scoop. I find myself looking at this book just about every day, if only to dream about the enticing flowers I'd like to plant some day.
- This is a fantastic book, if you want concise information on a wide variety of flowers. I was familiar with a few types of flowers, but I wanted to find out what would grow well around our house, when we moved in a few years ago.
The book is divided into four sections (annuals, perennials, a short section on roses, and bulbs), with general information about each type and using them in a garden, then there is a long encyclopedia section for each type. Each flower gets a page, usually with 2 pictures (one of the flower up close, and one of the entire plant), features of the flower, best planting sites, a monthly calendar describing when to plant and maintenance through the year, how to grow, how it typically flowers, and any additional maintenance or care, if needed.
My mother-in-law is a certified Master Gardener, and she often looks through this book. We're going to buy her a copy for her birthday, this year.

3 comments about The Botanical Garden: Volume II: Perennials and Annuals (Botanical Garden).
- I have seen an early copy of this book through a friend, and I can honestly say it is the best botanical reference book that i have ever seen.
The Pictures are brillient, with the plants seeming to come alive from the page. The authors- Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix are two of the most respected authors and have a welth of experience that they are egar to share with you. My Advice- PreOrder this book before the Christmas Season rust to advoide dissapointment.
- A little awkward to navigate, I would prefer Botanical alphabetical order...you definitely will be going to the index a lot. I would also like to see more specific information on the plant's preferred environment and zones. Excellent illustrations; great for plant I.D.
- This is great for botanist and gardeners. I am a botanist and will say that these pictures are worth a thousand and one words. It is faster to look though this book than search the web, when you are trying to remember a flower because the images are so clear and vivid. They are arranged by scientific families and there is a glossary of common and scientific names.
The book is VERY heavy and the pages are glossy (got for free super saver shipping!). It is necessary that this book be hardback, because it will be used. I have artist friends that have borrowed it to sketch from. Friends have looked though it to get ideas for planting flowers and researching native blooms. I wish I had had this book as a child, because I loved plants then too!
Be sure to get the set(book on shrubs too). If you buy the set, instead of one at a time, the books come in a box. I purchased my set in the box while working at the New York Botanical. This box helps protect the spines and hold these huge books upright.

5 comments about Botanica's Annuals & Perennials: Over 1000 Pages & over 2000 Plants Listed (Botanica).
- Annuals and Perennials is a great book for gardeners of all ages. It tells you when to grow plants, when the flowers of that plant will bloom, and where in the U.S. it will grow. With full color pictures and info on tons of plants, I gave this book a five-star rating.
- I bought this book thinking it would be comprehensive and a useful resource for planning the flower beds around our house, but found it to have a number of shortcomings.
On the plus side, it does have lots of nice photos. However, I usually can't find the particular cultivars that it has in local greenhouses, nor does it often have photos of the cultivars that they do stock. On the con side, the worst flaw is the index, which is practically useless. Many of the plants that I have looked up are not listed by EITHER latin or common names in the index, though some of them are in fact listed in the book. In some cases, the index will refer you to another name ("see under X") but then X is not listed in the index either. It is maddening. The end result is that in many cases I cannot find anything about even common species in this book. Also, the book has very little specific information about what types of conditions each plant prefers, and how to cultivate it. This is due in part to the large number of different varieties that it contains, so that the book tends to generalize (eg, plants of the X family prefer sun or shade, depending on the variety). So that makes it much less useful. I would recommend this book only if you know a lot about gardening already and only want it as a reference to look up photos of different strains of flowers.
- The excitement of having a plethora of pictures of each annual and perennial is accomplished with this book. The photos are lovely. However, had the contents been organized in a longer setting(12X14) and more user-friendly reference of the plants, I would have been more forgiving in this review. The book is too small (5x8)and too compact for the enjoyment of looking for the perfect plant(s). The common names are not included and this makes for a need for ordinary identification.
Kudos to the photographers.
- I have owned this book for 2 years and I use it almost daily during the "gardening season" and a lot through the cold times, dreaming and planning. There is also a wonderful reference table at the back of the book that lists quick statistics for each plant. (Perennial or annual, zone, bloom color, planting time & flowering season.)
This book does not claim to be a landscape planning book, so knocking it for not being one is unjustified. The index is very comprehensive, even for common names. I've had no problems with it. But, to expect any book to know all of the strange, usually regional common names given to plants, as mentioned by an above reviewer, is unreasonable. I loved this book when it first arrived and I love it more all the time. I can't imagine how this book was made for such a reasonable price! I've paid much more for books with far fewer pictures. You will love this book!
- I bought both Annuals & Perennials, and Trees & Shrubs for considerable price and found them both lacking in listings and information. Some commonly grown plants that are excluded from this collection include: daffodils, artichokes, tulips, bamboos, chamomile, crocosmia, crocus, ostritch fern, cinimmon fern, and on, and on. I was hoping to use the books to correlate Zone information between Sunset Western Garden's system and the USDA Zone system, however, many plants that ARE listed in the Sunset book are NOT listed in the Botanica books. I'd highly recommend the Sunset Western Garden book over these two photo albums provided by Botanica. Whether you garden in the Western U.S. or not.
