5 comments about The Movie Book of Answers.
  1. Carol is a multi-disciplinary artist who has a passion for quotes and incorporates words into her two-dimensional and sculptural works. She told me she was working on a third book and finally it has been published!

This one gives even better answers than the first two, to the point where I am starting to wonder if I am being watched when I ask the book a question. One time last week, I asked the book the same question three times! The book almost said: "I told you the answer the first time." The answers I kept getting for the first question finally concluded in me reading: "Anything you do could have serious repercussions on future events."

    Talk about a warning!

The picture here at Amazon does not do this book justice. It is about two inches thick, the size of your hand, and is covered in a classic blue cover. The book feels good in your hands. If you saw it on a coffee table you would reach out for it intuitively.

To research this book, Carol had the immense challenge of deciding which movie quotes to include. I was pleased to see she included quotes from: It's a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. Some other favorites include:

It sounds better in French. -Jerry Mulligan: An American in Paris
I've warned you fairly, don't change your course. -Faith Wishart: Ebb Tide
Make Time. -Frank Stark: Rebel Without a Cause
Yes, but don't hold that against me. -Peter Warne: It Happened One Night

My first introduction to Carol's books was: "The Book of Answers." It is a book of mystery and you are instantly intrigued when you see its unique size and the first thing you will think will be: "What is that book about?"

I was one of the last people to a book signing party. They were just putting the books away, when I became intrigued. I walked over and found the last Autographed copy...as if it was waiting for me. I opened the book and saw a few words on each page. What I didn't realize was that I had to ask a question first, and then open the book!

Fortunately Carol Bolt was there to save me and explained how the book worked. Carol Bolt is one of the nicest authors I have ever met. She is just as fun to talk to as her book is to read. She said that the idea for "The Book of Answers" came from the advice her parents gave to her while she was growing up. She told me it held "all the answers to her life."

As soon as I knew the secret of how to play with this new toy for my brain, I was laughing and told my husband we had to buy this book. Carol explained that her books have the intrigue of a magic eight ball, but unlike the magic ball, this book has so many more answers.

You supply all the questions, and then you can find one answer printed in capital letters on each page. The instructions are on the back of the cover on a removable sticker and are also in the front of the book. You place your hand on the cover, reflect on a question, and then when it feels right you open the book and read the answer.

In the first book: My husband asked: "Will I make more money at my new job." The answer: "In a year from now, it won't matter!"
Well, since then we have moved to an area where you can make the same amount of money and afford to live better.

    So, how about that!

I can highly recommend all three of Carol's really fun books! They are great for parties and will have your guests intrigued in no time!

So what did it say when I asked: "Will everyone love this book?"

"Once you have found it never let it go." -Emile: South Pacific

    ~The Rebecca Review

  2. "The Movie Book of Answers" compiled by Carol Bolt is pretty much a cross between Bartlett's Famous Quotations and The Magic 8 Ball. The process for using this volume is the same with which Virgil's epic poem "The Aeneid" was used in ancient times: you hold the book closed, take 10-15 seconds to concentrate on a closed-end question, stroke the edge of the pages (yes, that is in the instructions) and when you sense the time is right, you open the book and PRESTO the right answer will be there before you.

I have to tell you in all truth and honesty that Virgil worked a lot better for me than this volume. Maybe I am not stroking it the right way, who knows? I read Rebecca's review and of the great success she has had with this volume and I think "Will she like this review?" and I ask the book and it comes back with "Oh Yes, You Can...You Must" (Captain Von Trapp: "The Sound of Music"). I am so confused (Grandfather: "Moonstruck"--I am just quoting here, I do not know if it is really in this book). Maybe I am just under a curse. Did I mention that Virgil works really well for me? I tried it again: "Will Amazon.com edit this review?" and the books says, "[You] can never go back" (Narrator: "Rebecca"). Wait! There's a link! If only I was asking about Rebecca when I got the "Rebecca" quote.

Maybe I am just one off here by one. Wouldn't THAT be ironic?

Look, I happen to like The Magic 8 Ball and I like movie quotes, so this is a great combination in the tradition of peanut butter and chocolate. Maybe I am just under a curse. That would explain why I am having all these problems.

  3. Either it didn't work for me, I'm stupid, or it's a piece of [junk]. Because when I asked it questions, I got stupid answers that no one would understand!

  4. This book is a really nice personal wisdom tool- if you can take a couple of quality minuets in your day & use it as instructed and seriously(without asking lite-hearted or stupid questions) it will give some pretty insightful replies for you to ponder on. I understand that Carol Bolt has also released "The Souls Book Of Answers" which answers more "open-ended" type questions(i.e. "what should I do about....."). This form of divination is relativly new to me, having studied the Tarot for several years, but I find it a refreshing break for using from time to time. The truth about all forms of divination(Tarot, Crystal Balls, Dice, Books, etc.) is that they are not "special" in themselves, but they help you to connect to the answer(s) deep within you. There are some fortunate individuals in this world who already possess highly developed "sixth senses", but for the rest of us there are tools like "The Movie Book Of Answers". Try it & find out for yourself.

  5. I liked this book and the only reason that I didn't
rate it a 5 is because some of the phrases do not
make any sense. Most of them do though and that is
good. The book itself is fun and I use it every time
I have a yes or no question. It is suppossed answer
your question, which most of the time it does. You
would not want buy this book if you just wanted to
read it like a chapter book. This is more for reference.
I do like the quotes, and the design, and overall this
is a good buy in my opinion!

5 comments about Game Modeling Using Low Polygon Techniques (Charles River Media Graphics).
  1. This book has to many vague descrpitions that will leave the reader referencing every other reading material they own in order to figure out what the authors are talking about. The picture which the authors tell you to reference in the book are small images in black and white, which are impossilbe to make out, I bought this book used and I wanted to return it. These aurthors tell the readers to reference models which are clearly not the original model they started working with as an easy way for the authors to move on, while the reader is left scratch their heads because what they have doesn't match with the authors, Any one learning modeling aviod this book, it will only fustrate you, save your money for something else.

  2. Please pocket your money. Don't shell it out on this book. This book is ALL about using the extrude feature in your 3D program. Extrude this, extrude that. It's tutorials are also VERY unclear and leave you hanging in the dark with unanswered questions. It uses awful, uninspiring art for sample work throughout the tutorials. You're better off learning on your own, experimenting with the controls and what not. What a "lie" . The title is very misleading. I am never buying anything from that publishing company ever again.

  3. The book will show you enough to know how to make a model and UV map the thing and to be honest when your new and want to get into modding games or somthing thats all you care about however in a way I agree with the ones that were unhappy with this book in regards to the fact that you do the same thing over and over but when your new thats all you do anyways so if you want to get your feet wet and "have the EXTRA money" go ahead and buy the thing it will teach somthing you didn't know.MAYBE:) Everyone has to start somewhere!!!!

  5. This book would have been relevent in 1995, but lots have changed in the game modeling world since then. The really weird thing about the book is the fact that they are working entirely in triangles instead of quads. It's close to impossible to really see your mesh flow and get proper "edge looping" in areas like the shoulders and knees, an issue not even mentioned in the book. The models may look nice, but when rigged, they will move like crap. Deformation is not even mentioned and like the above reviews state, all the pages talk about "Extruding" the edge profile. That's just a start. What about poly clean-up and edge spacing? You could easily trim this book down to about 10 pages. I recommend GAME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WITH MAYA(even for max users) instead because Antony Ward goes into "deformation testing" while modeling a character with proper edge loops.

5 comments about The Making of Doom(r) III: The Official Guide.
  1. Steven Kent was given extraordinary access to the creative team doing Doom 3 while the project was under develoment. In this book he charts that development from early conception and the development of details like a new graphics engine that would do the actual on screen graphics. He then moves on to the development of characters, locations, and sounds that make the game what it is. One by one the developers are introduced, often by interview. And the developers get to say their prospective on the game and their part in it. The book is profusely illustrated showing the characters in the sceens where they belong.

It is surprising, no incredible to me that the game of Doom 3 was created in total by a team of some 22 peop.le.

  2. This book gives a great insight on the inner workings of ID software. The paper used in the publication of this seems to be extremely high quality. My only gripe is the book is not hardcover. Overall Steven Kent does a great job as usual. If you want to understand how ID works this book will explain alot.

  3. I purchased both this book and the Half-Life 2 'Raising the Bar' book together for a discounted price. Both are exceptional and both I HIGHLY recommend owning.

The Doom 3 book is far heavier on word count and focuses on the entire production of Doom 3 as opposed to the sporadic comments and captions grouped with pictures in 'Raising The Bar'. Having said that both are different and will appeal to everyone interested regardless.

Both are printed on very high quality paper, 'Raising The Bar' even having a hard cover, a sore omission from The Making Doom 3. The content is brilliant with hundreds of images gracing throughout and insights into the making of these games. I particularly liked reading about the ideas, monsters and objects that were cut from the final games. Seriously, every gamer or visual artist/designer should own these, awesome and inspirational 'picture' books to have laying around.

SO! If you are a fan-boy or girl of either game, get both, they are EXCEPTIONAL READING and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  4. This book was an utter let-down. I was pumped up ready to dive into this book after reading the previous reviews here on Amazon. The reviews made it sound like it was a solid book with a lot of detailed information regarding the actual "making of doom 3". This book in reality is a half-assed, piece-mailed collage of hype and fluff. There is no meat here. Steven Kent is not David Kushner, and this is not "The Masters of Doom" (part 2)... very unfortunately.

What I was expecting from this book was stuff about how the team created what they created (which the book does, to some extent), but more importantly, WHY. What were the reasons for making certain decisions, what were the challenges they had to overcome, what technological barriers did they break, and how did they persevere together, as a team? I also wanted to know about the personal stories and the inner happenings of the game in production. I wanted to learn about the conflicts between the developers and the motivations for doing things they way they did. I wanted to know what kind of pizza they ordered after working 80+ hours a week, and how many liters of Mountain Dew they consumed as a whole. None of this was even pretended to be addressed.

What the book does is a cheap, glossed-over summary of doom 3. It talks about the doom story mostly and tells some basic information about how things were created. (Anyone already in game development will surely recognize the provided information as elementary and immediately self-evident.)

About the only good thing in this book is the Question and Answer Section with John Carmack. As always, John provides a real treat by articulating his knowledge of technical issues and world view opinion in the most elegant way. The author, Steven Kent, gets one point here for not editing Carmack's dialogue; for Carmack, on a number of occasions, seems to poke fun at the interviewer's most obvious lack of game development knowledge.

Get this book if you are interested in game design (but have no previous knowledge) and/or if you are a die-hard id fanboy.

  5. Great book by the writer Mr. Kent! The only problem that I came across was the that the pages fall out with minimal use. Warnig!!! Don not treat this book as a standard book!
