It takes the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How out of playing. So if you like Pokemon, Monster Rancher, and/or RPGs then buy this book. Oh yeah the Game too.

  2. I bought the game just for a little laugh at Bandai's Pokemon imitation. It turned out to be a whole lot more than I expected! I am definitly bought buy the strategy guide! You get to raise your own cute (or weird!)Digimon.

5 comments about Gaming Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools.
  1. This book covers everything. You can go old school and get information on Mame games and building your own arcade machine. It covers portable with information on PDA games, hacking your Gameboy, and installing a PS2 in your car. It talks about the online world with combat strategies, how to game the systems to make money, and how to find and avoid cheaters. It's got great advice on how to build high end gaming PCs. Consoles are covered as well. He talks about overclocking them and chipping them to play import games. And that's just a sample.

    Were this any other type of book I would say that the coverage is unfocused because it's too broad. But it's a Hacks book and these are intended for people with a clue to give them material on a wider range of topics. It starts you off and expects that you will run with it. For example, you get a lot of information about how to create a home arcade machine with Mame, but you won't get the detailed construction plans.

    The text is well written, though he does tend to use the gamer lingo, so you may need a translator if you aren't up to the minute. Certainly the best book I have seen for people who want to push their gaming experience beyond what you can get out of the box from Electronics Boutique.

  2. If you're a gamer who is always looking for new information to improve your gaming experience, check out Gaming Hacks by Simon Carless (O'Reilly).

    Chapter list: Playing Classic Games; Playing Portably; Playing Well With Others; Playing With Hardware; Playing with Console and Arcade Hardware; Playing Around the Game Engine; Playing Your Own Games; Playing Everything Else; Index

    Like all Hacks titles, there are 100 hints, tips, and hacks that cover the spectrum of gaming, from hardware to software, from consoles to online gaming. If you're old like me, you might enjoy Play Commodore 64 Games Without the C-64 (#2) and Play Atari ROMs Without the Atari (#3). Those will take you back to your early days of computing. If you're into first player shooting games, Tweak Your Tactics for FPS Glory (#94) will help boost your scoring. Carless will even help you play Japanese video games without knowing the language in #97 - Play Japanese Games Without Speaking Japanese. He shows you some basic hiragana and katakana that you'll encounter frequently in those games, and that might allow you to bridge the language gap.

    The only trouble I see with the book is that it's covering such a wide area of subject matter. Unless you're a full-time gamer, you'll probably find a number of areas in this book that don't pertain to your interests. In some ways, that's OK for a Hacks title, as not everything is meant to apply to every single reader. But this particular title seems to be a bit more scattered than usual. The material is good, to be sure, but each reader may have a different opinion of the book based on what their gaming interests are.

  3. If you want to go far beyond the obvious, whether you want to modify your console controller to work on other consoles, create your own text adventure, or modify your Game Boy, there is an awful lot of fun you can have for cheap or free, using the creative exploits of the gaming gurus. Gaming Hacks is the indispensable guide to cool things gamers can do to create, modify, and hack videogame hardware and software.

    Everything from social exploits and tips to be used in MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) to soldering-iron heavy hardware hacks is covered in this extreme-cool hack guide written by gamers for gamers. Gaming Hacks offers a stunning variety of hacks, exploits, and other creative acts on both modern and archaic console hardware and today's PC hardware. One hundred detailed, ingenious hacks are included.

    Gaming Hacks also includes detailed software-based looks at MMO (massively multiplayer) titles, FPS (first-person shooter) games, machinima (real-time movies created using game engines), emulation, save-game hacking, and many other miscellaneous subgenres and topics.

    Gaming Hacks shows hardcore gamers how to configure the best FPS peripherals, hack the Nuon DVD Player/Gaming System, modify their Game Boy, watch movies and listen to music and their Sega Dreamcast, and much, much more.

    Gaming Hacks shows you how to do things you didn't know could be done. If you want more than your average gamer, if you want to explore and experiment, unearth shortcuts, or make your games do what you want them to do Gaming Hacks will show you how. You don't need to be gaming guru to pick up Gaming Hacks, but you will be one when you put it down.

  4. This book was a lot of fun to read and provides a lot of great tips for not only getting the most out of your current gaming system, but also for enjoying those games you played 20 years ago. The book starts out with an introduction to emulation and MAME, which allows you to play old console games (like the Atari 2600) or arcade games on a PC. The author even provides directions to illustrate how you can take an old Atari 2600 paddle controller and hook it into your PC (with a soddering iron and a little work). Any gamer who ever played on the Atari would love something like this.

    In my favorite chapter, the author shows how to maximize portable devices for gaming fun. In one hack, the author shows how to play games on your iPod. In another hack, the author shows how to produce color pictures from the Game Boy's black and white camera attachment. There are even instructions for turning your PocketPC or PalmPilot into a Game Boy or even a Commordore 64.

    The author has a section dedicated to creating the best game machine, where he discusses video cards, mice, and other peripherals. In other sections, the author discusses how to modify your gaming console, including Xbox mods, tunneling (e.g. making games play online that weren't designed to be played online), and other game hacks. Finally, the author rounds out the discussion by demonstrating how to create and add a vehicle to Unreal Tournament 2004. While it does require a bit of time and some work, I was surprised at how relatively easy the whole process was.

    This is a great book to read if you enjoy gaming-regardless of whether they're games from 20 years ago or brand new. This book will help you to get the most out of your gaming experience and have a lot of fun doing it.

  5. This book covers a lot of ground -- check out the table of contents and you'll see something for every flavor of computer or video game, from the Atari VCS to PC-based first-person-shooters and massively multiplayer online role-playing games, to handhelds like Palm and Pocket PC devices, to all of the major console machines you attach to your television.

    Like any computer book, this is full of ephemeral information that may not age well. In a few years, many of the links given here will cease to exist, and much of the hardware referenced could be difficult to find. Some of the tools which seem cool today will be commonplace, having been built into new revisions of hardware. The author does a good job of anticipating where this might happen, and sticks to generalities while providing specific examples wherever possible. As I write this review, the book has been in print for almost a year, and in my opinion, it remains fresh, relevant, and worthy of purchase.

    Some of the activity described in this book is in the grey area between legal and illegal activity, and Carless takes care to warn the reader when he/she might be stepping on dangerous ground. Such caveats make this book even more interesting to this reviewer and probably others as well.

    If you've ever done any of these things, enjoyed it, and wanted to do more, then this book is for you!
    - played a Japanese game on a USA or UK territory console;
    - played a "hacked" ROM of an old game in emulation;
    - wanted to get more out of old games which are boring now;
    - wondered about nonstandard import adapters and accessories;
    - wanted to interface your console with your PC

    In other words, if you're creative enough to want to think outside the narrow box that some manufacturers have put us in, and want more, you want this book, even if you've already done a lot of this stuff on your own. The weblinks alone will provide hours of entertainment, but the book draws everything together into a coherent whole. Cheers to Carless for writing this and to O'Reilly for having the courage to publish this in the age of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act!

3 comments about Official Nintendo Power FINAL FANTASY V ADVANCE Player's Guide.
  1. This guide contains a wealth of information for the game, as well as a handful of larger versions of the original Amano artwork. All of the jobs have their abilities laid out in easy-to-use charts, there are full and useful maps in the back, and it's certainly much kinder on the eyes than a FAQ. These few things, however, are its only strong points.

    It unfortunately falls into the trend of strategy guides that only present bare minimum information for a topic. For example, one of the last pages has a chart listing all of the Blue Magic spells available, but only lists a single creature for each spell. This despite the fact that sometimes three or four enemies have the capability to cast a spell, and the one presented in the chart is not always the first that will allow a character access to the spell. There are charts for every spell in the game, though the chart lacks the level of each spell, making planning job ability swaps a bit difficult.

    The layout isn't always especially great, with information that would seem rather important(such as the jobs unlocked at a certain point) being hidden in a tiny list or piece of a larger paragraph in most cases. Jobs and spells are listed with page numbers, though in my experience most of the pages referred to have nothing at all to do with the sourced material. Also, for some reason the screenshots for most pages must have been placed with the wrong resolution, as most are muddled and distorted.

    As a personal preference, which I can't exactly hold against the book, I would have preferred to have a bit of variety in the boss/enemy tactics. About halfway through all of the boss tactics basically degenerate to "Use your strongest summon and the Samurai's Zeninage ability." Thanks? Even the hidden bosses list that same tactic. It would have been nice to have more than two short sentences of advice for a battle that the guide describes as the hardest enemy in the game, or to have tactics for more than one of the game's multitude of job abilities. Even a section with interesting suggestions for job/ability combinations could have helped liven it up a bit.

    All-in-all, this is a decent guide if you really desire a lot of nice visual aids and the most basic information on the game. Outside of that, it is a book marred with problems that simply should not exist in a finished professional product.

  2. but if you do not want to print out an entire book, from an online site, then this would be helpful.I found myself having to visit forums and print some important, strategic information that was lacking in the guide. Annoying. Never did find some of the information ANYWHERE. One would think that it should be in an OFFICIAL guide.I agree with Falchieyan's review.

  3. The guide is good, with nice screenshots and helpful hints for getting items. I couldn't have gotten through the game and collected the things I did without it. But, it is short on detail, and for a novice player--like me--it can be very frustrating.

2 comments about Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (Prima Official Game Guide).
  1. I used Prima's guide for Ghost Recon: Island Thunder and found it an invaluable resource in getting through the tough spots of that game. So naturally when I picked up Advanced Warfighter for Xbox, I got the Prima guide too.

    What a disappointment. There is absolutely no useful information contained in this book to help you get through the game. None. How the authors manage to ramble on and on for dozens of pages with dozens of pretty screen shots and tell you nothing useful is beyond me.

    Of course, I can only speak confidently of my experience with the Xbox portions of this guide. Maybe if you have an Xbox 360, that portion of the guide actually is helpful (that wouldn't surprise me). My recommendation for Xbox players is to enjoy GRAW (it's awesome) but don't bother with the guide. Xbox 360 players, judge for yourselves.

  2. gave me the edge to beat the game but could have had a lot more info.

  1. I bought this (ahem) "strategy guide" hoping it would improve my bad opinion of the worst Wii Video Game I have yet to buy: "Nights."

    It didn't improve my opinion of the game....but it did prove to me that a poorly designed video game is likely to have just as poorly a written guide.

    A word of advice to the publishers of this debacle: Leave the writing of strategy guides to Prima.

    Save your money on this as well as the horrible game!

  2. Nights is the best game ever this idoit below be sucks he doesn`t even own the game he is a lair its the best game ver most magizenes gave it a 9.5 out of 10 how could it be bad

  3. I bought this guide hoping to find out a few more secrets to improve the lifespan of the game, sadly, there wasn't the wealth of information I was hoping for.
    While this is not the fault of the strategy guide (the game is too short and has few secrets)it makes buying it a bit pointless.
    There are no real strategies for breeding the pians and mepians either, which would have made the guide a bit more useful.
    You don't need the maps and boss strategies as the levels are on a set path (unless you decide to wander about as the kids) and the boss levels are easy and obvious to complete.

    It's handy for the dreamdrop guide and there's some nice official artwork in there, but if you expect it to give the game a bit of extra longevity you will be disappointed.

5 comments about Legend of Mana Official Strategy Guide (Official Guide).
  1. Okay, let me start off by saying I have beaten Legend of Mana, and used this exact guide.

    The guide gives great walkthroughs, nice pictures, cool intro with characters and battle tips explained. Tells you how to do all the events, and has them mapped out in the game perfectly where you don't have to be flipping from one page to another ( which is difficult to do b/c LoM is a non-linear game big time ). Overall I was very satisfied, the only complaint, however, is that the items list in the back of the book is useless, it doesn't even tell you what the stuff does...but if you can see past that little flaw, this is an excelent guide. Would recomend.

  2. This guide is good a helping you complete all of the events in a good order, and the flowchart in the front of the book helps out simetimes. On the other hand, the flowchart is flawed and sometimes doesn't work, and some of the events are out of order (one event concerning Daena is placed in the middle of the book, whereas, it should be in the front, which is the only ime in the game that you can complete the event). Although the guide states that there is an ability list, there isn't one at all. If you're not trying to master this game, I suggest you buy this guide. If you're looking to find everything, find a walkthrough at GameFAQs or something.

  3. If you want a step by step describtion of every event in the game get this guide. If you want to raise monsters, seeds, golems, etc. then don't. The guide only goes over the events in the game and touches on the other stuff only briefly. The other problem is that the guide has you get the final artifact right in the beginning of its chapter 4, this leaves about 35-40 even events to do before it goes over it. I don't know any gamer that would be able to complete the game knowing very well that they could just lay down the Sword of Mana and win the game. The guide was very poorly set up and should have been planned to ensure that the player would get through more than 90% of the game before they could initiate the end game sequence. Don't buy it if you don't have to.

  4. If you are absolutely desperate for a guide and totally lost...go online and find a nice FAQ or walkthrough. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS unless you have no access to the Internet and have money to waste. The walkthrough is very inaccurate, there is NO ABILITIES SECTION, the last third of the book dealing with "information" is useless. It glosses over a great deal of information, and the rest is not mentioned at all. Really, if you're going to buy a guide, buy the Japanese version. It's 20$ more and all, but even if you can't read it at least it has nice pictures, you could probably figure most of it out from them alone.

  5. Legend of Mana is ancient in the game world by now, but just in case, I offer this warning: THIS GUIDE IS A JOKE.

    The maps are chaotic at best, the events poorly explained, and much of the information is downright wrong. It's as if the authors got bored halfway through the book and just filled in the blanks randomly. For instance: "Fights: none. When you leave, you will fight Niccolo."

    Run, don't walk, to GameFAQS for help on this game.
