5 comments about Ensemble Studios Official Strategies & Secrets to Microsoft's Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.
  1. I haven't read Prima's guide, but I have been very pleased with this one. It focuses on multiplayer which is what I like, and it offers a good amount of detailed tips that will help you become very competitive on the zone. The poster could have been better and some color photos would have been nice, but I bought the book to become a better AOK player and it has definitely helped me acomplish that.

  2. The book is well-written, but is pretty weak in the multiplayer/online content section. I'd like to see a book written by real online gaming experts. But it has a lot of great single-player tips.

  3. I love Aok and play both rm and dm multiplayer. As a hardcore fan and as someone who has a zone rating of 1750 and has played many other games not rated the guide isnt very useful. If you are a beginner its pretty good and if you like the campaigns it is good it also has some basic rules and concepts. One thing I hated is that it has no strategies for deathmatch games. I love dm and it is fast moving and has tons of battles the book has no strats and i guess you just have to learn the hard way to win like i did. I wish there was a multiplayer book with advanced strategies but oh well.

  4. Having played AOK for about a year (mainly against the computer - some online) I thought I was an OK player. I had strategies that worked for me most of the time and I could generally hold my own against any civilization up through the moderate level of difficulty.

With this book, I learned three strategy tips the in the first several chapters that immediately made the game more enjoyable and my efforts much more effective against the bad guys.

There are tips sprinkled throughout the book from players who don't work for Ensemble Studios but who are very successful players. These tips were generally helpful as well, and gave some insight into some unorthodox strategies at times.

Shortcuts and hot keys are emphasized and highlighted throughout the chapters. This guide will definitely have you practicing the use of hot keys more than ever (if you don't already).

There is considerable information related to multi-player games as well, such as how to complement your partner and how to know what opposing forces can lend each other in terms of help. I am not sure what the "hard-core" multiplayer readers who rated this book poorly are looking for, but it gave me great insight into being a better team player.

The book does not go into the minute detail of what steps you should takein what order, in every game and every scenario. Certain AOK websites have taken this process to the level of art, and maybe that is what some people are looking for. The book does, however, provide insight into Ensemble's mindset in designing the game and also gives the average-above average player a great boost in terms of knowledge.

If you want to be sure that you are employing as many time-saving tips and shortcuts as you can, and you want to hear what tactics are employed by outstanding players, buy this book. If you are a highly rated Zone player, or can smoke the computer on the Hard difficulty level or above, you probably do not need this guide anyway.

  5. I'm revising my review, because after playing the game for awhile, I realized the advice I poo-pooed actually comes in handy. HOT KEYS ARE ESSENTIAL. This is probably the most critical piece of advice I overlooked, a piece which this book covers well. There are also good tactics for each culture. I recommend this book. For context, my original review appears below:

I was disappointed with the "secrets" contained in this book. I'm only a beginner and it didn't really tell me anything I didn't know or couldn't figure out for myself. Some of the lame advice included "use hotkeys," "listen for the audio clues," and "use combined arms." Section on Diplomacy was weak and it didn't really mention how to handle a game against several computer opponents which always tend to gang up on you. Scenario section looked quite helpful if you play the scenarios, but I don't. I would recommend this book for raw beginners, but not anyone above that.

  1. After this abomination, I may never buy another strategy guide again. I was expecting some real insight from this book, but it didn't teach me anything in regards to how to play this game better. The only thing of any value is the listing of the races which tell you what new items you will unlock and when. Unfortunately, even this isn't as good as it could be, as it is flat out wrong in many cases. I don't know what to trust anymore. And lastly, early on, when listing the game options, they mention how you can turn "Car Damage" on and off. But this feature isn't in the game! My feeling is that they rushed to put this book out and used a VERY early version of the game. When the final version of the game was released, rather than updating their strategy guide, they just left it as is. Very unprofessional in my opinion, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth for ALL strategy guides that will come after it. A total waste of money.

  2. Considering the game title is a fairly straightforward streetracing game, and a very well produced one at that, the book is quite well put together. There are no real secrets in the game to talk about other than "Drive as fast as you possibly can"; especially as much of the fun in the game is centered on customizing your car which can be a riot in itself.

Subsequently I find the book to have more appeal as supplementary information for the game and for fans of this entire great series from EA rather than as a profound strategy manual. Anyone that needs revelations in this form for racing games just doesnt get it. For the previous review writer, it sounds like he had a bone to pick with EA and/or Prima. Go back to reviewing toasters dude, your input is way SKU'd.

  3. I really like this game. It has a lot of pimpin' cars and mods. It is one of the best racing games ever. It really brings you into the world of street racing.

  1. Tricks of the DOOM Programming Gurus is an excellent book due to the fact it is easy to follow and *all* lessons are required to do otherwise the end WAD will not be complete (unlike some other how-to computer books) Pictures, Diagrams and tables are included to help the reader understand the various elements in Doom. An excellent feature of this book is that when you finish reading it you will be fully qualified to make excellent WAD files without ever needing to refer back to the book, and its another point of its easy-to-understand feature. Overall, the book is an excellent work and good. However, its only let-down is that Doom gets out-of-date very quickly with more modern games, and it doesnt teach you much for the future; however, this is of no fault of the authors.

  2. Now that Doom has become 3d with all these new ports (DosDoom, Zdoom, DoomGL) people really want to learn how to edit levels, quickly and beutifully. This explains step by step. A very good book! I'd suggest it to anyone that wants to male there own Doom levels!

  3. i got this book waaaayy back when it first came out and it has been a companion for me for editing doom which i still do as a hobby today. doom has to be the easiest game to edit on the planet and the possibilities are endless. this book is huge first off and theres a reason why. it gives you step by step instructions on level editing, graphics editing and miscellaneous editing to make your own custom doom. every chapter explains how to use the editors and also surprisingly tells how they work and how they can work for you. theres also another book that came out which is newer, 3-D alcemey however you spell it which is a continuation of this book. i recemmend this book to anyone with barely any computer programming knowledge who wants to make their own game out of doom.

  1. good book BUT CFS 3 has too many problems I gave My cfS3 to my son to see what he could do with the STUPID thing

  2. Don't buy it because you may want to purchase the product. The only strategy that I want to figure out is how to get my money back for this waste of an optic disk.

  3. The info in the strategy guide is good, but there are other books and websites about air combat that can provide information that is just as good or better.

  4. GREAT GAME, TO FLY AND HAVE FUN AND DOGFIGHTING ON THE INTERNET IS GREAT. REALISTIC TO THE TIMEES.

5 comments about Donkey Kong 64 Official Strategy Guide (VIDEO GAME BOOKS).
  1. the Golden Banana? the American Dream? is anyone seeing the connection? this is social allegory at its finest. Schmidt and Bogenn play upon the secret hope of all of us, to find the "strategy guide" that will impart upon us the "surefire trick" to "defeat the boss" and attain the "Golden Banana." ....... Written under Marx's ideological wing, this guide teaches that EVERYONE can use these techniques, and WE ALL can "beat the game." The only obstacles are the bosses and their minions (the capitalists and the police that exist to protect their property), and that there are enough bananas for every proletarian monkey to be satisfied if only they learn to work together.

  2. I call this guide the gateway because it has helped me so much. It tells you all you need to know plus it comes with a poster how good is that.

  3. This is one of two strategy guides I used to play this delightful game. There are strengths and weaknesses in both. This guide is particularly helpful in guiding you step by step through each area to accomplish all of the goals and challenges. It is most helpful because it takes you through each area in an order that is the most efficient and the least confusing.

Initially, you have to acquire each Kong family member by rescuing them in a particular order and this guide takes you through those steps. Once you have acquired all of your characters, it later becomes necessary to use one Kong member before another or in a particular order. This guide gives the order they recommend and the reason why.

Of particular interest to me was the information regarding how to gain a third melon (your life meter in this game). Not being an experienced video gamer, I needed all the help and chances I could get. This information gave me hope that I could get that extra cushion (about a third into the game) so I would not have to keep replaying certain parts over and over again.

The maps were not as clear or helpful as they were in the other guide I used which was "Donkey Kong 64: Prima's Official Strategy Guide". (See my other review on it) For me, having the best of both of these books, greatly enhanced my game experience.

  4. This is a very good guide in that it goes through details of how to get most golden bannanas and most metals. Yet it has falts. For example, the maps are no good do to the fact that there is no way to tell how to get from one place to another50. Also the other stratagy guide that someone else mentioned is a lot sturdier. I mean even if your as gentel as beep the pages will rip out of this stratagy guide. Finally in order to recieve a metal to let you fight K. Rool you have to beat this old fashion Donkey Kong arcade game twice. Though this guide mentions the game it dosen't explain how to beet level 3 of 4 well enough. Other than that it's a pretty good stratagy guide.
