5 comments about Ensemble Studios Official Strategies & Secrets to Microsoft's Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings.
  1. I haven't read Prima's guide, but I have been very pleased with this one. It focuses on multiplayer which is what I like, and it offers a good amount of detailed tips that will help you become very competitive on the zone. The poster could have been better and some color photos would have been nice, but I bought the book to become a better AOK player and it has definitely helped me acomplish that.

  2. The book is well-written, but is pretty weak in the multiplayer/online content section. I'd like to see a book written by real online gaming experts. But it has a lot of great single-player tips.

  3. I love Aok and play both rm and dm multiplayer. As a hardcore fan and as someone who has a zone rating of 1750 and has played many other games not rated the guide isnt very useful. If you are a beginner its pretty good and if you like the campaigns it is good it also has some basic rules and concepts. One thing I hated is that it has no strategies for deathmatch games. I love dm and it is fast moving and has tons of battles the book has no strats and i guess you just have to learn the hard way to win like i did. I wish there was a multiplayer book with advanced strategies but oh well.

  4. Having played AOK for about a year (mainly against the computer - some online) I thought I was an OK player. I had strategies that worked for me most of the time and I could generally hold my own against any civilization up through the moderate level of difficulty.

With this book, I learned three strategy tips the in the first several chapters that immediately made the game more enjoyable and my efforts much more effective against the bad guys.

There are tips sprinkled throughout the book from players who don't work for Ensemble Studios but who are very successful players. These tips were generally helpful as well, and gave some insight into some unorthodox strategies at times.

Shortcuts and hot keys are emphasized and highlighted throughout the chapters. This guide will definitely have you practicing the use of hot keys more than ever (if you don't already).

There is considerable information related to multi-player games as well, such as how to complement your partner and how to know what opposing forces can lend each other in terms of help. I am not sure what the "hard-core" multiplayer readers who rated this book poorly are looking for, but it gave me great insight into being a better team player.

The book does not go into the minute detail of what steps you should takein what order, in every game and every scenario. Certain AOK websites have taken this process to the level of art, and maybe that is what some people are looking for. The book does, however, provide insight into Ensemble's mindset in designing the game and also gives the average-above average player a great boost in terms of knowledge.

If you want to be sure that you are employing as many time-saving tips and shortcuts as you can, and you want to hear what tactics are employed by outstanding players, buy this book. If you are a highly rated Zone player, or can smoke the computer on the Hard difficulty level or above, you probably do not need this guide anyway.

  5. I'm revising my review, because after playing the game for awhile, I realized the advice I poo-pooed actually comes in handy. HOT KEYS ARE ESSENTIAL. This is probably the most critical piece of advice I overlooked, a piece which this book covers well. There are also good tactics for each culture. I recommend this book. For context, my original review appears below:

I was disappointed with the "secrets" contained in this book. I'm only a beginner and it didn't really tell me anything I didn't know or couldn't figure out for myself. Some of the lame advice included "use hotkeys," "listen for the audio clues," and "use combined arms." Section on Diplomacy was weak and it didn't really mention how to handle a game against several computer opponents which always tend to gang up on you. Scenario section looked quite helpful if you play the scenarios, but I don't. I would recommend this book for raw beginners, but not anyone above that.

5 comments about Omikron: The Nomad Soul (DC): Prima's Official Strategy Guide.
  1. This is the best strategy guide I have ever used. Everything was completly explained in detail and was very easy to follow. The game was very hard and without this I could not have beaten it. If you own the game or are going to buy it you will definatly need the guide, and trust me, it's worth it!

  2. The game is similar to Resident Evil:CV, and if you are like me, they you probably have trouble solving puzzles. In the game, there are many objectives that are completed by being different people, and you may have trouble figuring out how to solve the puzzles and who you have to be to solve them. Although strategy guides defeat the purpose of these types of games, it is also no fun if you get stuck and cannot find your way around the game. I recommend this book if you get stuck easily. Prima's Strategy Guides are very thorough, and with this book you won't miss any secrets.

  3. Omikron: The Nomad Soul is much, much more than a game. It is an entire world. When you start it, you truly feel that you are leaving this world and entering another. All the cliches like groundbreaking, innovative, and evocative hold true with Omikron but they do not do it justice.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul is so vast, so deep, and so multi-threaded that the Prima Official Strategy Guide is an absolute must have. No matter what your level of familiarity with Omikron is, you really do need this guide. There are many places that you've never visited in Omikron, many characters you've never met, and many sub-plots you've never followed. And they are all here in the Prima guide. The incredible level of detail, the descriptions of the numerous elements encountered in the game, and the why and how of doing what you do while in Omikron are all here.

Page after page of full color screen shots, maps, descriptions, character studies, hints and tips, and much more are to be found in the guide. It is beautifully done with 175 full color glossy pages packed with information about Omikron that the serious devotee has to have to get the most out of the world/game.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul is sure to become a classic in interactive entertainment, and the Prima Official Strategy Guide is a great accessory to the world/game, and is also quite beautiful in it's own right.

Buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

  5. Omikron is a very fun game, but sometimes it gets pretty tricky. Some of the navigation through rooftop labyrinths just aren't something you're going to get right away, and there are other things like secret characters, or directions on how to obtain the goals. One thing is when you're trying to blow up a bridge, there's this big section you have to run through and switch buttons on to create a distraction while shooting and running to a specific door that will take you to rafts that will take you to the bridge. That's pretty crazy. The book tells you what to do. It has great graphics, easy to understand step-by-step directions, and helpful hints on what you could do to make it easier before you go into these parts of the game. It was very useful to me and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the game.

  1. This has to be one of the best hint books I have ever read. It explains everything from beating boards to codes to attack patterns for use in multi-player mode

  2. since i'm a doom fanatic, i look for everything that's about doom, especially all doom collections games and books. i suggest you buy it cuz it's a must-have book for everyone who got some plobrems on the DOOM II levels. and also with the right prize, i suggest you buy it now.

  3. Probably one of the better DOOM guides out there. Ed Dille, the writer of this very good guide, adds more than just the basic strategy to this guide. He adds some attitude and a few sections that most guides do not have. I suggest this guide to nearly anyone. My only problem is that the strategies are explained in a few paragraphs and you have to read through the whole level strategy to find the part you are looking for. Other than that the maps are amazing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Also see the Bradygames DOOM II strategy guide for an alternative.

  1. THIS STRATEGY GUIDE RULES! W/O IT I WOULD HAVE NEVER BEAT THIS GAME. IT HAS DETAILED DESCRIPITIONS OF ALL THE WEAPONS AND MAPS. AS WELL AS IN DEPTH TACTIC GUIDES.

A MUST HAVE FOR THE H/C GAMER:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. This book also leaves much to be desired, and I still think that Mark Walker is a much better author. But I did get some info from this book, and am happy with it as it is. The book arrived in a timely manor and in excellent shape. Thanks.

  3. go online.
    Get a guide there
Use these pictures to help get oriented.
The maps are useful, but the game's AI make the tactics
    and descriptions offered
something you will master through other means.
Worth it used, you can buy the game for its new price.

5 comments about Tekken 3 (Prima's Official Strategy Guide).
  1. After I read this book, it left a lot to my mind. There was SOME strategy, but not very much per character. Ben Cureton's, Versus Books', and IGN's guide were much better done, and they were all written by Tekken experts (especially Cureton, who is a three-time national Tekken champ). This book could have been written by my ten-year old brother. Avoid this and buy either BradyGame's book or (better yet) Versus Book's.

  2. Boy, was I disappointed. This "strategy guide" had NO strategy. Heck, it didn't even have a good layout for the moves!! I bought this book for the characters exclusive to the PlayStation version, hoping for a COMPLETE moves list for them, but of course, I was wrong. It didn't even have combos, and what they passed off as combos were actually the 10-strings that are already in the game! The strategy disgraces the genius of Tekken! I could probably beat Simon Hill because the Versus Books strategy guide was actually a strategy guide! And that strategy guide was actually made by national Tekken champs!

Don't get this strategy guide. The best parts of the book are ones you can glance through when you're sitting down reading it in the newstand. The artwork (4 measly pieces that you can download) and the history of Namco are the only things going for it.

  3. The guide for tekken 3 could have been better. They spent lots of time with the photos, but some of the moves were either wrong or incomplete(paul's tackle to choke move). King's links could have been explained better, and there is lack of actual combos for all the characters. I enjoyed brady's guide better.

  4. This game I give a rating out of ten, 20. I've had it since 1999 and its now past half way through 2001. If you like martial art style games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, this puts them to shame. The first time I played Tekken, I was hooked, and I had a ps by the time Tekken2 was released, I couldnt help my self, and when Tekken3 came out, I was almost sick of the tekken saga, until I baught it, and trust me, it was well and truly worth the wait. The mixture of global martial art styles was a delight. From Brazilian Capoeira to Japanese Manji and Chinese styles of all kinds. Not only were these styles accurately named and studied, but Namco still added more, thousands, literaly thousands of unmentioned and unlisted moves to give the game far more life. Every character you unlock also unlocks hours more. The modes available make the game interesting, and again, more life is added per mode you unlock. The realistic movement and 3d envirenment lift the game into a higher light, where as in MK4 it is still 3d, but there is no sidesteps, various combos, throws and power moves as opposed to Tekken3. Survival mode means you can never stop improving and the endings are humourus, exiting and thought provoking.

To put it short, Tekken3 is brilliant, the only flaw is that there arent enough stages in Force mode. 200% rating from me

  5. In response to

The usual from Prima, May 31, 1999
Reviewer: A reader from Los Angeles, California

This man has never read the book. This book has EVERY move availble to the characters. Some characters span several pages more than others (Lei Wulong). It tells strategies on how to beat EVERY other character in the game. This guy must not of bothered to open the book.
