  1. This is of the same quality as Lunar 1. If you have the game this is a MUST-HAVE!. Do yourself a favor and pick this up

  2. I live in a box! The pictures amused me, but I sold the shiny part to a group of passing sherpas. BROMIDES ARE NEAT! STAY OUT OF THE SUN! BEWARE THE SPORK OF DESTINY!

  3. When i bought Lunar 2, I made the mistake of buying this guide. First, this guide is intended for the Sega CD version of the game. Working Design changed enough of the game when porting it to the PSX that Maps, Item Lists, etc.. are completely incorrect in this guide. Second, even if it was correct, there's little in this guide other than maps. Finally, the game is so linear that a guide isn't needed. To sum it all up, avoid this guide.

  4. Okay, first of all, this book helps a helluva lot... Second of all, many people are complaining that it doesn't. Its as simple as reading the info. This is for the Sega CD/Sega Saturn version of the game, so read carefully. Zach Meston is hilarious and his comments have always made me smile. I got rid of my old Sega systems quite some time ago, but I still have this book. It might help for the new one, it might not. But if you don't like to take chances, don't buy it. But if you want it for the Sega versions, by all means, buy it.

  5. This guide is fun to read and very helpful, since Lunar 2 for Sega CD is harder than for Playstation. Zach Meston writes fun captions and comments along the way. The guide is in beautiful full color throughout the book, unlike Lunar The Silver Star for Sega CD which is in black and white. The story is slightly different than the Playstation version.

  1. The guidebook helps to figure out how to play the game. The game itself doesn't have much as far as "how to" options. I am new to one-person shooter games and so I wanted a little help. The book helps you to do that, but it lacks great graphics. Most of the graphics are dark and thus hard to see. Plus, it would have been nice for the book to show examples of the XBox and PS2 controllers when explaining the functions of the buttons. All it does is explain the controls. It would have been nice to have something to reference to besides just the actual controller itself. It's a good book, though, just not great...

5 comments about Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide 2002.
  1. Leonard Maltin, unfortunately, is apparently held in high esteem by the DVD makers. His inane commentaries have shown up on everything from Disney's Donald Duck DVD's to the Little Rascals DVD's to the Marx Brothers' DVD's. Unfortunately, he is the type of guy that is an apologist for any cultural references resulting from a certain era in cinema. The kind of guy that has to be PC about everything.

On the same side of the coin, as shown in his video guides...he praises some of the inane tripe currently coming out of Hollywood, while bashing some of the classics of earlier years....probably because they aren't PC enough.

His book is filled with comments that show his real lack of perspective on history. And not only is he not a good historian, he needs some help with alphabetizing the movies, as well. What a pain trying to locate a movie using his system ["often" comes after "of a", but before "of the"].

He picks and chooses the actors he lists in his index...and some strange choices there are.

And, additionally....while he lists what is available on DVD...he DOESN'T indicate screen ratios, OAR's, pan & scans, etc, making the indicator rather useless for the TRUE movie fan.

My recommendation....stick with Martin/Porter or Moviehound. While you may not always agree with them, their comments aren't near as insipid and PC, and you'll be able to actually find a movie without having to interpret a hole new way of alphabetizing.

  2. I sometimes cycle through this guide for a laugh. Maltin is a horrible film critic and a total historian - basically meaning that any film predating 1960 MUST be given 4/4 (unless it's really mediocre which, according to him, is rare). However he didn't hesitate to give BATMAN AND ROBIN 2.5/4 and TAXI DRIVER 2/4.

He also gave THE BLADE MASTER, one of the worst films ever created, 0.5/4, yet he's given some truly decent films "turkeys."

I'd rather read a video guide by Ebert because unlike Maltin, Ebert doesn't judge different films of different genres of various years against each other. He's pretty fair. Maltin is not.

  3. OK. I've installed this on my ipaq 3670. It opens fine. It works fine. It's installed on my CF card. Yes, it's slow -- but it's a 4 MB book (that's big). I can wait a little bit.

It didn't cause my pocket pc to crash. It didn't cause me to do a hard reset.

It's alot better than the e edition of Maltin's 2003 film guide. The 2003 version did not have the "Lookup Definition" section on the cover page.

Yes, you find the film by "looking up" the definition, but so what? Without this feature (as in the 2003 edition), it really doesn't work. But this 2004 edition DOES WORK. So what if you have to look up "Sting, The"? I can adapt. As for activating the MS Reader, you have to do that once, and you have to do it if you are going to read any copyrighted MS Reader book. It's really not that hard.

I'm really sorry the other guy had so many problems, but I'm not having them. Maybe you need to have a pocket pc with at least 64 MB RAM and a decent amount of memory free to operate it. Also, make sure you install the MS reader into your RAM, but install the ebook on an external memory card.

    Good luck

  4. I have not found a single review in this book that I could passionately disagree with. There are some controversial decisions in here (Donnie Darko and Memento have a formidible cult fan-base, but recieve reviews that are not terribly flattering); but if you really did want to see these films, why would you be listening to someone else's opinions? Basically, if you are going to review this book, compare it to the other review books on offer-Leonard Maltin's is much more comprehensive and helpful than any I know of, especially Halliwell's Film Guide, which I recommend never looking at, if you can help it.

  5. I must protest that in Maltin's 2004 movie and video book, Maltin calls the Gary Cooper character a "mercenary" in the movie "For Whom the Bells Tolls". How could anyone make such a dumb mistake?

  1. After reading this book almost cover to cover, I can easily say this is the most comprehensive book regarding online gambling written to date. From software providers to sites to avoide, Mark Balestra has included it all. I have found it to be an excellent choice for reading as well as a good reference tool. Thank you Mark Balestra.

  2. mark balestra has done a wonderful job in putting together what potential players will need to know before playing offshore. it is simple to write a book that explains how the different games are played online but the big concern here is safety factors when fronting your money offshore. mark makes these things crytal clear and tells you what to avoid and where to go for advice. i highly recommend this fine book for anyone who is considering internet wagering!

  3. This book has basic information of the sort you quickly find on your own. Like other _Idiot_ books, pages get filled with elaboration of the obvious. The book also has a very rah-rah cheerleading tone for the gambling industry -- a highly complimentary reviewer above is in Belize, a major host of gambling servers. There is a short, common sense section on how to avoid problems, but no mention of any of the actual URLs who've been ripping people off. For that, go to the free portals like winneronline, gamemasteronline, gambling.com. However, I think the book still would be quite useful to someone new to both gambling and the web.

5 comments about The Wing Commander Confederation Handbook.
  1. Although full of incredible images and some fun facts, the handbook is only alright. I was looking for another STAR WARS TECHNICAL MANUAL but I was disappointed by the 'glossy' workmanship inside. Not to say this isn't a good read for WC fans! Many of the areas, like Blair and Maniac's academy forms and the Deck Officer's 21 Rules and Regs is actually quiet fun and Tolwyn's reviews of officers are interesting. A lot of the book could be made better, like the opening interview with Sir Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn or the layout of the Tiger's Claw. Over all, a disappointing but nessessary book for all WC fans.

  2. FINALLY! Wing Commander finally gets a technical book like the ones in the Star Wars universe. This book is full of rich detail. The pictures are nice, and the extra's like Jump Point physics and analysis of Pilgrim Brain Wave patterns were very nice. McCubbin did a wonderful job with this book

  3. Yes inded it is. It's a great manual with a lot of facts and scifi- stuff. It has a lot of great illustrations and the art work is god. But there is one thing that bugt me though. Only half the book is in color, the rest is black and white. Not that it matters but I just thought that I would bring it up. Every Sci-fi and Wing Commander fan should have one. The best thing about the book(manual) is that you get the background information on the Pilgrim Conflict from the movie, Theres also included a boarding protocol for marines, and technical information of their weapons and equipment. another thing which can be a little anoying is that theres only technical information about the ships and fighters from the movie. I would have liked them to have included some of the other confed. ships from the 3rd and 4th installment of the CD.rom games. All in All this book is great I wouldn't miss it for the world, there is tons of cool stuff in it which I do not wan't to reveal to spoil your fun. Now, go buy the book. A tip: Buy the movie soundtrack, sit down on your favorite cauch, open a can of soda relax and read the book(manual). Alvin from Denmark

  4. My god... I have played to games, and i have read the books. The only good thing about the book is that it sticks to the movie. But the problem with that is that the movie sucked equally.

The facts are wrong and corny. I do not recommend reading the book or seeing the movie even if you arent a Wing-Commander fan If you are a Wing-Commander fan: Then you'll hate this movie and book because...well, its all wrong. Blair was an orphan, and his mother lived. There were no pilgrims! Jesus!

If you are not a WC fan: You'll think this was made for kiddies under 8....

  5. Lets clear one thing up. This book is canon in regards to the Wing Commander movie. NOT the video games. The two are completely different franchises so if you're looking for some official writings based on the games you will have to look further. On the other hand if you are looking for the same in regards to the movie you hit the jackpot. This book is very comprehensive all things considered. It's even comprehensive enough to make you look at the movie with a different perspective.

While this book doesn't really rival other movie-manuals like the Colonial Marines Technical Manual it goes into a LOT more detail than you might expect. You get a comprehensive history written in this book that explains all that Pilgram stuff that was on the movie. It also covers the history of the Kilrathi war as well as the customs of that race. You also get officer profiles of all the major characters in the movie.

The technical side of things is okay, but not perfect. You have some decent info on the fighter ships and carriers from both sides of the war, but I wished they went further. For instance there are deck plans for the Tiger's Claw, however it's a VERY basic plan and there's not much information added from there. Also it would be nice to know things like how powerful are the main guns on a Rapier? How effective are meson shields. Stuff like that. What I did like was the fact they put some detail on little things like the combat armor the marines wear and the weapons they used.

The one thing that really impresses me on this book is the level of detail that was put into the explanation of the faster than light technology in the movie (jump points and the drives that ships use to access them). This includes the history of the science and technology. For any of you sci-fi science nuts this stuff is really interesting.

All in all this is a very worthwhile book. As a matter of fact I recommend reading this book before seeing the movie if you can. The book clears up a lot of things that can be either vague or uninteresting for the layman. This book especially clears up the whole "Pilgrim War" issue they mention in the movie. Pick up this book if you can get it cheap. It would be well worth it.
