  1. I absolutely love Klutz books, and have all of mine in a plastic bin that I call my "bored box" for when I have nothing to do.

But I say, don't bother with this one. It's a disappointment.

For one thing, each page is only about 3x3" (perforated, and you have to separate them yourself -- the actual equivalent equals only about 20 normal-sized pages). The book is highly overpriced (I didn't buy it through Amazon -- if you get it, get it through them since they have a good price on it!)...I paid $18 for it. And finally, in the first edition they made a mistake so just added a Post-It note to correct it!

The worst thing about it is that there are only a few ways to play Peg Solitaire before you get bored with it.

Instead of getting this one, unless you are a Peg Solitaire addict (because then you will probably like it), I recommend grabbing a friend and getting the Klutz Book of Board Games. It has one Solitaire game in it that you can play by yourself, but the rest of the games are for buddies. Or if you're convinced you want to play something all alone, get their Klutz Puzzle Arcade, full of puzzles -- it's an A+!

By the way, sorry my review is so biased. I think Amazon has a pretty reasonable price for it, so you might want to go ahead and spend your cash on it if you really like this sort of game.

  1. This book is quite miss leading. 113 easy-to perform miracles boils down too about 5 basic magic tricks with dozens and dozens of variations. Although these tricks are essential for future card tricks I think its not worth it.

  2. I found this book to be a great book that teaches card tricks ranging in skill from easy to difficult. It includes tricks based on the Si Stebbins Master System, Math-based tricks, and preforming tips and tricks. Overall, I give it 4 stars.

2 comments about World's Best Card Games for One.
  1. This book makes no attempt to be comprehensive in its listing of solitaire games, but the games it does describe are described in large print, with diagrams, and examples for the games that are not so obvious. This was useful to me as some of the more comprehensive books (and web-sites) keep the directions minimal. Certainly a good buy at this price.

UPDATE: This book is now published under the title GREAT SOLITAIRE GAMES.

  2. I collect books on solitaire. I would not recommend this
to anyone but a collector -- there are much better books
in print, such as Morehead and Mott-Smith's "The Complete
Book of Solitaire and Patience Games" or Parlett's
"Teach Yourself Card Games for One". Barry claims to
have selected the best games in her book, but it is still
littered with junk like Auld Lang Syne (a virtually
unwinnable game with no skill). The descriptions are
often incomplete and occasionally wrong (her description
of Pyramid, allowing cards to be used a second time after
being discarded, is nonsensical). She describes Storehouse
as a minor variant of Canfield; it's actually a forerunner
where cards are packed in suit. She rates games by
amount of space used (an interesting feature) and level
(it's not clear if this is supposed to be win rate, in
which case many of the ratings are wrong, or something
else). Myron Miller's illustrations are nice, but the
book has little else to recommend it, either in selection
of games, or clarity and accuracy.
