- Along with most of the other reviews on here, I agree that this is a great beginners book. It doesn't get too much into detail about higher limit games, but beginners don't need to worry about that yet. It does a great job of explaining different types of major poker games. It also tells you a key aspect of the game that I think it equally as important as knowing the game, and that's self control and money management. The glossary in the back is also useful. The only down side to this book is it doesn't get into great detail on betting structure. When I first read this book, I noticed the most popular low limit game fo Texas Hold 'Em (1-4-8-8), is not really talk about. Overall, if you are new to the game of Poker, and want to learn the essentials, GET THIS BOOK!
- I have recently left the arena of recreational poker player in home games and low-limit casino poker. I have moved up a notch and have become what I call a semi-pro poker player. An important book that helped me immensly was this book (and others) by Andy Nelson. This WINNER'S GUIDE gave me basics. It is filled with solid advice and information on how poker should be played. It describes the games usually played in today's world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning and wants to improve. By the way, it makes an excellent gift to a spouse or friend who wants to make money playing poker.
- This is a fair book, but it is not near as good as Peter O. Steiner's "Thursday Night Poker." Andy Nelson's book can't decide whether it is for beginners or advanced, so it tries to fit advanced technique into too short of space. It barely scratches the surface of any of the topics it brings up. When it doesn't do that, it simply says, "Play so tight that you don't even have to think. Fold 99% of your hands." That does not make for a fun night, in my opinion.
- I have read many fine books on Poker. Three of Sklansky's, Jones's, Hellmuth's and others. This book however is my favorite and it really worked for me. As a beginner, I won, and won more - following this likable text. The third time I ever walked into a casino (Oceans-Eleven, in Oceanside, CA) for my first Texas Hold'em tournament ever, I came in fourth place out of a crowded Saturday field, and won $525.00! I was awed making it to the final table. The guys I was playing against were extremely experienced (the guy who won it, Paul Rowe, was 4th in the 2002 Legends of Poker Tournament, and he has won at the 4 Queens, LA, and other places you can see on the internet - with three terrific finishes at Binion's WSOP). I made it to 4th place against guys like him - by following the Tournament Play chapters towards the end of this book. Honest to god. What more can I say? This book caused me to have one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This book should be on top of the list of books for people starting out in Texas Hold'em, and other Poker games.
- This is a great book for beginners or players new to the game of Poker. This book provides sound advice and a great base to build your Poker game on. If your looking to purchase your first Poker book this one is an excellent "first" book. I give the book four out of five stars because it has sound content but lacks intermediate and advance stradgies. (There are other books for that once a player is ready) For what this book is (a good solid foundation) it's worth five out of five stars but it is by now means the ultimate Poker book.

- Bought it for a friend...cheated...and read it before giving it. What at first appears to be a coffee table picture book is actually a well written, informative and lively account of various poker facts and stories. If you love poker you'll definitely enjoy this book
- Cool book to peruse on a rainy afternoon for those who fancy themselves as poker enthusiasts. While the book provides no insight or tips on game strategy - keep in mind that that's not what this book is for. Rather, it delves into other topics such as the history of the game, the colorful personalities, game lore and historical/memorable bad beats and monster calls. The other great highlight of this book are the numerous illustrations pulled from a few centuries worth of poker art found in advertising, book covers, etc.
- My husband bought me this book as a gift shortly after I was appointed as a "global poker specialist" at an online poker room service provider. Although the stories and histories make for interesting reading, the book was not what I expected. I was expecting a bit more information and advice from the top players of today.

- No game (except, possibly, baseball) has enriched the English language as much as poker. We all understand "ante up" and "playing close to the vest" and, possibly, "four-flusher" and "dead man's hand". But, how about a "double belly-buster", an "Elmer", or a "juice joint"? Well all these terms, and many hundreds more, are defined in this book with wit and precision by an author who has obviously spent many hours at the poker table with his ears open. He also gives examples of how the terms are used in real poker table talk. Read this book. You'll enjoy it and you'll talk like the most experienced poker pro, even of you still play like an Elmer.

- This book lacks any specifics about pokwer situations... It is a very general book and will not help any advanced player...it will only help beginner players slightly...find a better book
- Moorehead's book is a good first book with sound but somewhat conservative advice. It does not address any of the newer games like Hold'em or Omaha, but is one of the few books with a section of Draw.
- Outside of the occasional computer game, I only play poker once every ten years or so. When I play, I usually come out ahead, something I attribute more to luck and the roughly equal skills of my opponents than any innate ability. Nonetheless, the few games I do play and the various competitions I've seen on television made me think that the right poker book might help me rise to a slightly better level of averageness. Albert Morehead's The Complete Guide to Winning Poker is not that book.
In certain ways, Morehead does the right things in his book. He describes the fundamentals of poker and makes the distinction between the two basic forms of the game: open poker and closed poker. The former is the stud family in which at least some cards are revealed to the opposition; the increasingly popular Texas Hold'em also fits in this family. Draw poker is typical of the closed game in which no cards are revealed until the showdown. There are also some nice strategies that Morehead discusses for each type of game, as well as the importance of bluffing, money management and position.
The big problem with this book - which is not really Morehead's fault - is that it is too old, having been first published in 1967. The lingo of poker has evolved over the years as well as the types of games played. The back of the book, more likely the writing of the publisher rather than Morehead, claims that there is discussion of Texas Hold'em, but the game is actually never mentioned in the text. I would guess most readers would probably be interested in Hold'em, so this would be a letdown.
Some things are Morehead's responsibility, however. I have read a number of books on bridge over the year, so I am familiar with the genre of card game books. While Morehead obviously knows his stuff, he lacks the clarity that is important in such books. He often uses poker slang that he hasn't explained and his writing style is, to put it bluntly, a little boring. I am sure there are good poker books out there; this book, while not awful, is still not one of them.

3 comments about Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker.
- In his new book, Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, engineering Ph.D. and mathematician Michael Stelzer shares simple playing and betting strategies that guarantee poker players will leave both tables and tournaments as winners.
Providing a brief history of poker and basic playing strategies, Stelzer's approach does not require players to have any previous skill or experience, nor does it involve learning a complicated system or counting cards, making it practical for players of all levels of experience in both casinos and private games.
Stelzer's study of poker began as a hobby based on his extensive mathematics background. The discovery that many poker games offer players odds as favorable as 50/50 inspired Stelzer to test gaming strategies of six popular poker variations. Using computer simulation, Stelzer was able to establish strategies for determining whether or not a hand should be betted on based on desirability.
Stelzer encourages responsibility in betting and gambling, emphasizing that Mathematical Strategies is not a "get-rich-quick" book. However, players who follow these tested probability methods will find that they can minimize losses by folding undesirable hands while capitalizing on virtually guaranteed wins.
- The passion for gambling dates back to ancient times, with poker being one of the oldest and most popular forms. Author Michael Stelzer became fascinated with the game and convinced that his knowledge of math could help him understand and beat the odds, decided to investigate its complexities from a mathematical standpoint. Letting the chips fall where they may, he formed his own astute conclusions on poker's risks and rewards, and his findings make up this terrific little handbook. Mathematical Strategies to Winning Casino Poker, which is one that good poker player can't afford to be without.
Whether you are a novice or an expert player, you'll find lots of fascinating tips and tricks to get the upper hand on your opponents. Stelzer suggests that the games are actually not stacked as highly against the player as you might think. Any good player can win big money on poker and walk away with those winnings, he found, and this discovery so buoyed Stelzer's own confidence that he began hitting the casinos himself to play.
Lucidly and elegantly, Stelzer gives the reader a concise history of the game as well as those all important poker basics. His thorough analysis of the various poker hands, as well as their accompanying mathematical proofs, is straightforward enough so that anyone can benefit.
Readers will learn playing and betting strategies, such as play or fold decisions, hand derivations and game strategies, how to manage a bankroll and more. Encompassing years of personal research in casino poker games, Stelzer's book is packed with enough information to help anyone play better and enjoy poker more. Knowledge is power, and with this handy guide, any reader can have the confidence to win.
- This is a good book for players who want to win.
Very easy to read and understand.
I used the strategies to hit more than once.
Well worth the look.
