- good book looking at bending and breaking the rules of 21 by altering ones cards and/or money. techniques from the basic to the outrageous. worth a read by any serious player if only to see how others take money off the house.
- An excellent book that goes in depth(and I do mean IN DEPTH!) into cheating methods used by crossroaders in casinos. For the serious player, this is a good read, as it contains some "legal" methods of advantage play as well. For anyone else, its just a very interesting book. If you enjoy gambling and casino life, you will probably enjoy this book as well.

- Avery Cardoza is one of the best poker players to every game along the Vegas Strip. He is also the publisher of one of the most impressive and 'user friendly' series of instructional books readily available to aspiring poker players. Beginning with "The Basics Of Winning Poker" readers will be able to quickly and competently acquire a basic knowledge of playing all the primary variations of the world's most popular card game including Hold'em, 7-Card Stud, Draw Poker, Omaha, and more. Readers are also instructed in the basics concerning cash games, tournaments, and online poker strategies, including betting, payoffs, and winning play strategies. Offering a quick and easy guide to the basic rules of play, "The Basics Of Winning Poker" also covers home games, cardroom play, and casino games. Of special note is what Cardoza has to advice novice poker players about money management strategies. Enhanced with illustrations and examples, as well as a Poker Glossary, "The Basics Of Winning Poker" provides virtually all of the information anyone would need to sit down at a game and have a great (and profitable) time. Also very highly recommended is Avery Cardoza's companion titles "The Basics Of Winning Hold'em Poker" (1580421644, $4.95) which specifically focuses on Limit and No Limit play for the most popular version of the game seen on television and played at such world class tournament events.

- The concept of "pot odds" is the core of the presentation. For example, drawing to an inside straight at 13 to 1 odds is said to be "wrong" however the authors shows you exactly when to make this move...and make all your poker bets based using this higher mathematical reasoning. You need a strong memory to use these principles, but they're worth $$$ every session.
- This is mostly about draw poker, which is not played in poker rooms any more.

- Along with most of the other reviews on here, I agree that this is a great beginners book. It doesn't get too much into detail about higher limit games, but beginners don't need to worry about that yet. It does a great job of explaining different types of major poker games. It also tells you a key aspect of the game that I think it equally as important as knowing the game, and that's self control and money management. The glossary in the back is also useful. The only down side to this book is it doesn't get into great detail on betting structure. When I first read this book, I noticed the most popular low limit game fo Texas Hold 'Em (1-4-8-8), is not really talk about. Overall, if you are new to the game of Poker, and want to learn the essentials, GET THIS BOOK!
- I have recently left the arena of recreational poker player in home games and low-limit casino poker. I have moved up a notch and have become what I call a semi-pro poker player. An important book that helped me immensly was this book (and others) by Andy Nelson. This WINNER'S GUIDE gave me basics. It is filled with solid advice and information on how poker should be played. It describes the games usually played in today's world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning and wants to improve. By the way, it makes an excellent gift to a spouse or friend who wants to make money playing poker.
- This is a fair book, but it is not near as good as Peter O. Steiner's "Thursday Night Poker." Andy Nelson's book can't decide whether it is for beginners or advanced, so it tries to fit advanced technique into too short of space. It barely scratches the surface of any of the topics it brings up. When it doesn't do that, it simply says, "Play so tight that you don't even have to think. Fold 99% of your hands." That does not make for a fun night, in my opinion.
- I have read many fine books on Poker. Three of Sklansky's, Jones's, Hellmuth's and others. This book however is my favorite and it really worked for me. As a beginner, I won, and won more - following this likable text. The third time I ever walked into a casino (Oceans-Eleven, in Oceanside, CA) for my first Texas Hold'em tournament ever, I came in fourth place out of a crowded Saturday field, and won $525.00! I was awed making it to the final table. The guys I was playing against were extremely experienced (the guy who won it, Paul Rowe, was 4th in the 2002 Legends of Poker Tournament, and he has won at the 4 Queens, LA, and other places you can see on the internet - with three terrific finishes at Binion's WSOP). I made it to 4th place against guys like him - by following the Tournament Play chapters towards the end of this book. Honest to god. What more can I say? This book caused me to have one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This book should be on top of the list of books for people starting out in Texas Hold'em, and other Poker games.
- This is a great book for beginners or players new to the game of Poker. This book provides sound advice and a great base to build your Poker game on. If your looking to purchase your first Poker book this one is an excellent "first" book. I give the book four out of five stars because it has sound content but lacks intermediate and advance stradgies. (There are other books for that once a player is ready) For what this book is (a good solid foundation) it's worth five out of five stars but it is by now means the ultimate Poker book.

- I really enjoyed reading this book. I am no poker player, so I wasn't sure what I would find in a novel about poker. I was pleasantly surprised, and came away with a lot more understanding of the game, and even a passion for playing it myself.
Neal tells a great story, and uses poker as a metaphor for the human condition. He does this well, with a beautiful construct. We are following two stories in the book. One story is a battle for the world championship of poker, played out card by card and hand by hand in an intense battle of skill between two great players. The other story is the tale of Utah McCormick and his journey to learn about poker, while also learning how to read the card game that is his life. Both stories are written with the view of a poker player; dispassionate observations and careful consideration of logic; no flowery phases and no wild extrapolations. The style of writing matches the story line perfectly.
Since I knew nothing of poker going in, some of the terminology was a bit intimidating. Neal doesn't interrupt his narrative with contrived explanations of the highly technical terms. Instead, he has provided us with an extensive glossary at the back of the book with all the slang and technical jargon that we need to understand the story, and feel like we are learning about poker in the process. I really like that approach, and I think he uses it well.
Neal's use of metaphor is excellent and thought provoking. I enjoyed looking at the story of Utah as a hand of poker, identifying the events that occurred in the context of his hole cards, the flop, the turn, and the river. The story is fun and entertaining, and the book is all the more educational for the complete immersion into poker.

- Sklansky first presentd the outline of the concepts of successful poker in his first book _Hold'em Poker_. Realizing that these concepts were not espoused in complete form elsewhere in poker literature he combined with Roger Dionne, a professional writer and a serious poker player, to explain the theory of winning poker in _Winning Poker_. Although Sklansky's ideas are slightly expanded in his later two versions of _The Theory of Poker_, they are presented better in _Winning Poker_. I found _Winning Poker_ to be much more readable than his later _The Theory of Poker_ and to more helpful. It is a better book (and less than one third the price).
- I totally agree with the former review, this is THE Book to read if you are serious to poker, I am a semi pro, and I have over 50 books about hold'em on my shell, and this one is the best of them all,it explain how to calculate the odds very well, effective odds, implied odds, reverse implied odds, deception, psychology, and it goes into the fundamental theorem of poker, also expectation and hourly rate and reading the oponents hands, this book helped my game in several ways, but most I learned what poker really is about, this book is written by David Sklansky and Roger Dionne, and it IS better than the "Theory of poker" by David Sklansky, not saying that the "Theory of poker" is a bad book, it's one of the best, but in this book he explain much more in detail, it is actually very well written for comming from Sklansky,

- For someone who's been playing friendly home game poker (i.e., spending time with friends drinking beer, smoking cigars around a card table) for a while but doesn't really have a foundation in the details of poker, this is a very good introduction. If you're a good experienced player who's looking for a more in depth analysis, this book isn't for you.
Although it's title is a bit much, Krieger's book provides the basics you need to know about the major variations of casino poker (holdem, 7 card stud, and Omaha). It provides good basic guidance regarding starting hands and the play throughout the game. The book doesn't exhaust the reader with overly complex "analysis" of variations of types of players and situations. While the better known books (Brunson, Sklansky et al) dive deeper into these areas, most people just need the fundementals that are in this book.
The book doesn't go into the issues tournament play; rather it focuses on the play of individual hands. There are plenty of good books (Cloutier) about tourney play that anyone who's seriously thinking about them should read.
A few minor issues. The book is organized a bit awkwardly. It discusses starting hand play for all types of poker, then middle play for all types etc. It would be much easier to read if Krieger had grouped all the discussion of Holdem in one section and done the same for Stud and Omaha. Some of the tables are a bit confusing. The table showing probabilites of making your hand on the turn or river in the holdem section is rather confusing. Last, there are several annoying typos in the book which are easy enough to deal with, but shouldn't be there. For example, in the listing playable suited connectors, it doesn't mention suited T-9 and the table showing the playable starting hands has a couple of typos as well.
Overall, a good intro to casino poker for beginners and home players.
