3 comments about Razoo At The Races.
  1. The wit and homor with which this book was written is sure to bring laughs to those who can relate to racetrack charaters as well as those who have never been to the races. Mr. West's writing style, combined with the hilarious poems of Marvin Small make for a thoroughly enjoyable read that will lighten anyone's day. I highly recommend this book and feel it was well worth the time and money I spent on it. The question is, when does "Razoo II" come out?

  2. Since "Good Vibes" in the 1980s, I've been looking for a horse racing book that could leave a smile on my face as it did. My seemingly endless search finally come to fruition when I picked up Gary West's "Razoo at the Races." I never thought anyone would have the forethought to actually write a book on horse racing that was both entertaining and educational. I would like to thank Mr. West and his partner Marvin Small for leading me into the world of insomnia. Most books are as good as the over-the-counter sleeping pill for solving the issue of elusive nocturnal slumber, but "Razoo" kept me awake until 3 a.m., "reading just one more chapter...No, just one more." Couldn't put it down. I recommend this book to not only the avid race fan, but to anyone who can appreciate colorful characters that will lighten your day and make you forget your troubles and isn't that what we're all trying to achieve. In that respect, and in many more, "Razoo" is a major success. Richard Linihan Horse racing writer 12 years with Tulsa Tribune

  3. I expected an informative, humerous, insightful book of some quantity, and quality. I received a soft cover book of 149 text pages that were repetitive, and admittedly plagiarized. I was charged $15.00 for this "book" and you now have it for $12, which is still too much.

2 comments about Barbaro and Other Inspiring Horses.

  1. This book is an inspiring account of not only BARBARO, but other
    great equine champions as well.

Well worth the price & the time to read !!!

  2. While I found the Barbaro stories to be very good, Letell missed the mark entirely in his biographies of Triple Crown winners Secretariat and Seattle Slew. In summing up Secretariat's stud career he states that he sired Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones and became the broodmare sire of Seattle Slew. Secretariat passed away in 1989. Smarty Jones won his Derby and Preakness in 2004. Anyone with just a basic knowledge of horseracing would know this. Secretariat never sired a Derby winner, but his son Risen Star did win the Preakness and Belmont in 1988. For the record, Smarty was sired by Elusive Quality.

Seattle Slew's mother My Charmer was by a stallion named Poker. Letell calls Slew's mother Poke. He is obviously getting his names mixed up. Again, basic knowledge will tell you that Secretariat could NOT be Slew's grandfather because Slew was born in 1974, which was Secretariat's first season at stud. None of his offspring had even been born yet! Letell compounds the error by inferring that Secretariat must have passed on his large heart to Seattle Slew!

Perhaps Letell was going by memory and didn't check his references. These errors stand out boldly in a book that was otherwise well researched.
