1 comments about New York Post Easy Sudoku: The Official Utterly Addictive Number-Placing Puzzle (New York Post Su Doku).
  1. I have become a Sudoku addict since I discovered it a couple of years ago.
This little book is perfect in several ways. The puzzles are easy to read, and the paper is very user friendly for the actual process. The puzzles are just about the right level for me; I am not always interested in progressing to the next level, and I have several other books that I use when I do. I would really appreciate it if this publisher would publish more of this type & level of puzzle book for folks who enjoy and order this one. I am willing to spend a higher price in order to play this type of puzzle book rather than the $1 ones you can buy on the newsstands.

2 comments about The New York Times Super Saturday Crosswords: The Hardest Crossword of the Week.
  1. I was completely disappointed in this book. It is quite possible that these puzzles ran on Saturdays in 1993 and 1994, as the copyright notation indicates. They are not, however, remotely in a league with the current Saturday level of difficulty. This is deceptive advertising at its most crass. It reflects very poorly on the editor, Will Shortz (who currently edits the NYT puzzles and surely knows that what I am saying is true), on the Times itself, and on Amazon, which ought to stop selling this slim but nevertheless sleazy volume.

  2. it isn't easy to find difficult puzzles. this book is great. i wish there were more of them. the harder the better. thank you

5 comments about Aranzi Aronzo Fun Dolls (Let's Make Cute Stuff).
  1. This is the first Aranzi Aronzo book that I picked up. I chose this over the other books because I liked the wider variety of dolls (snakes, cars, turtles, bears) that they featured. So far though I've only managed to make the bears, dogs and bunnies so it looks like I'll probably be picking up the original "cute dolls" as it seems to have more of the... er... cute dolls. Instructions are incredibly easy to follow. Another reviewer mentioned that the measurements are metric but I honestly haven't even noticed as I haven't had a need to measure anything because of the great pictures/explanations. I like the consistent reminders throughout the book to try new fabrics, to have fun and, of course, to make things cute.

  2. I love Aranzi Aronzo books for their super easy instructions and light-hearted tones. So far, this one's my favorite. I actually laughed out loud while flipping through the pages. I have a boy and a girl and there are tons of things in this book that both of them love. The patterns are so easy and there's no need to measure anything. A few of them suggest enlarging them slightly, but they look great as is! I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to make cute and easy kids' toys.

  3. "Fun Dolls" can be thought of as "Cute Dolls" volume 2. "Cute Dolls" provided patterns for making 18 full-sized (8-12 inch) Aranzi Aronzo character dolls (if you aren't familiar with the Aranzi Aronzo characters, check out the Aronzo website, www.aranziaronzo.com - they're sort of like the Sanrio/Hello Kitty characters, only with more personality) and "Fun Dolls" provides more of the same (18 more patterns). However, because most of the more popular and well-known Aronzo characters were dealt with in "Cute Dolls", this time around, the patterns are for some of the lesser characters (and, in some cases, ones that I had never even seen before). That's not to say that they're not cute, they are, but if you're looking for a pattern for making Brown Bunny or Bad Guy, you should buy "Cute Dolls" instead.

As was the case with the other Aronzo craft books, the patterns are easy to follow, the instructions are fully illustrated and there are colour photographs with hilarious captions throughout.

This is the third book in the Aranzi Aronzo "Let's Make Cute Stuff" series. People who enjoy this book should also consider purchasing the other books in this series: "The Cute Book", "Cute Dolls" and "Cute Stuff".

  4. I am very pleased with this book. It has a great selection of stuffed toys making it hard to choose the first pattern to start with. The size of the toys are just right. I also love the creative writing that accompanies the directions. All in all a great book!

  5. The book really has some easy, cute and super fun ideas for doll making. The only thing is that the seam margin is WAY to small.

5 comments about A Mah Jong Handbook: How to Play, Score, and Win.
  1. The Mah Jong Handbook presents an amazingly clear method for approaching the game. The book is easy-to-read, but deals with every aspect of the game in detail.

To get the most out of the book, I recommend taking the time to work through the example exercises yourself (before going on to the analysis discussion.) Once you've gone through the book this way, you'll pretty much know everything that an expert player knows. The only thing left is to get in enough playing time to put the theory into practice.

In addition to the game aspects, the book discusses the accompanying rituals and etiquette, as well as many variations on the rules.

  2. A good introduction to the game for beginners, with strategy advice that will be useful to more experienced players as well.

Whitney explains clearly and concisely, using easy to understand diagrams. She even manages to explain Mah Jong's rather complex scoring system, which can be a bit off-putting for beginners.

Her inclusion of the differences between Japanese and American rules is also quite helpful, although I've found that as with any game, some of the rules and terminology vary from region to region.

All in all a good book for those looking to begin playing Mah Jong, particularly those in Japan or with Japanese friends.

  3. Well writen and easy to understand. Particularly for a novice at Mah-Jongg.

  4. This book covers all the questions anybody would have about this complex game. I've searched all over the internet for answers but most rules and gameplay written on line seemed like poorly translated rules from Chinese or whatever with many mysteries left unturned. This book is great and with minimal reading gets you playing in no time.

  5. I am not a Mahjong playe. My wife is. I wanted her to have a reference book on American version. I thought this would be good. Little information available on books contents and objectives except the usual hype about how we cannot get along without it. The book was very difficult to figure out. I still don't know whether or not it can be used for the american version of the game. It was poorly written and organized. I sent it back and paid for the return shipping. I will want more details when I buy another. Maynard

5 comments about World's Best Card Tricks.
  1. If you never read "Royal Road To Card Magic", "Expert Card Technique" or "Expert At The Card Table", you'll find this book a good one. It has some good tricks, but it has some dumb ones too. I recommend this book for those who does not want to learn some sleight of hand before starting doing card tricks. As Amazon warns, this book is juvenile literature. Last word: if you buy this book and you like it, then buy "101 Amazing Card Tricks". It's written by Bob Longe too, and in my opinion, they should be sold together, for their similarity.

  2. I'm a magician member of the Magic Castle now, but in my early forays into card magic this book helped wean me away from trick Svengali and stripper decks, so that I could be handed a deck of cards from anyone and perform a nice trick. They're not all home runs. But I still get great responses from several of the tricks contained within here.
...and yes, I now own Card College, have read Royal Road to Card Magic several times, but those books should come after this one. This one will help you decide if you're serious about persuing more card magic or not.
A fabulous starter book, but make sure you practice!!

  3. I have been doing card tricks for a while, and I have to say that anything of Bob Longe's is a waste of money.

The tricks in this book are terrible. These are certainly NOT the "World's Best Card Tricks". I can't believe some of this [stuff] is even in here.

I highly recommend the reader to learn card magic from great authors such as Jean Hugard, S.W. Erdnase, and Arthur H. Buckley.

If you are a beginner, get the "Royal Road to Card Magic" By Hugard and Braue. It is of MUCH higher value and the tricks in this book will be 100x better than the stuff that's in Bob Longe's books. There is absolutely no way you can be the life of the party with these tricks, as the author claims.

  4. I like this book of card tricks for the fact that it is user-friendly and practical-minded.

After a brief introduction, Longe guides the reader through a series of card-manipulating exercises that have applications in hundreds of card tricks. He then lays out a series of card tricks, rated for their difficulty level, and complete with advice on what kind of audience might be best suited for any particular trick. The illustrations are simple and clear, and the tricks range from the basic to the extremely clever and inventive.

There's nothing new under this sun, but a beginner will find this guide much better than average when seeking to learn the basic skills necessary to amaze their friends and strangers.

  5. I recommend this book. It is well worth the money! Tricks are well explained and easy to perform with practice. I also recommend it for beginners, as I am one. Go ahead, try it!

5 comments about How to Beat Sit 'n' Go Poker Tournaments.
  1. Thought it was well written and easy to understand i only play for fun so this type of book was ideal for me, to many time i have bought a poker book only to find there was writting for a A+ math student to understand. The only thing that disappointed me was the "in the money chapter" which i though could have been longer, other than that, some great advice on what hands i should start playing at what stage of the tournamnet ect. good read all in all.

  2. This book is an excellent guide for people who wish to understand core concepts of sit and go-s and want thorough help how to play them. The style is simple and easy to understand. It covers every major aspects of the game and is an excellent starting book for novices to sit and go-s.

  3. There is money to be made in low level poker tournaments. "How to Beat Sit & Go Poker Tournaments: A No-Limit Hold'Em Guide to Beating Sit & Gos" is a guide to winning these sit & go tournaments. The most common form of these tournaments exist online and take only one or two hours, yet can be very lucrative if one takes into account the strategies found in this guide. Examining the flaws in failed strategies while providing alternatives and more successful tactics, "How to Beat Sit & Go Poker Tournaments: A No Limit Hold'Em Guide to Beating Sit & Gos" is highly recommended for anyone looking to improve their game.

  4. On the plus side, this book is a very quick and easy read, and probably improved my game fairly immediately.

On the minus side, that's about all it's good for. It has no depth nor detail.

I recommend breezing through this book quickly if you're a beginner (preferably through your library), then pick up Collin Moshman's book: Sit 'n Go Strategy.

  5. i bought this wanting to improve my game and learn some solid advice on how to play sit and go tournamnets.
The book gave a good understanding of the aggression needed around the bubble and some good concepts you need to know around this stage of the tournament.
I feel my game improved 8 fold after reading this and found it a pleasant read.

2 comments about Sip & Solve: Logic Puzzles (Sip & Solve Series).
  1. I have solving Logic puzzles for years and this is the best book I have found. The puzzles are easy to transport and the title fits perfect.

  2. These are fun puzzles, but a little too easy. Most of them can be solved in a minute or two. They don't come with a grid to solve the puzzle, so you will have to draw your own. Overall, it is a fun book for someone on the go.

5 comments about The Professional Poker Dealer's Handbook.
  1. I'm a student right now in poker school and this is the book we are using for class.

It covers everything from the proper mechanics of "pitching" (dealing cards the proper way), flops, sidepots and controlling the table.

I've read the book multiple times. I highly recommend this to prospective poker dealers and even long time dealers that have developed some bad habits in their game.

  2. Have you always dreamed of being a Poker Dealer?
If you read and study this book, it is only months away for you. My husband was told to buy this book by our Casino Poker Supervisors. He was told to read it three times and then study and practice what is in this book. He has been playing poker most of his life but this book helped him turn his hobby into his job. He worked only 4 days as a Poker Dealer and now he is a Poker Supervisor and Dealer. This book helped him learn the skills to fulfill his dreams and it can do the same for you.
Become a Poker Dealer with this book by reading and practicing what the author Dan Paymar give you. His tools really work. Good Luck.

  3. I got a job as a poker dealer and had have a few errors that weren't quite covered in my "introduction course" by my employers, plus I wanted to be as professional as I could so I decided to buy this book.

The overall structure of the book is somewhat confusing since you can find repeated lines all over the book, and several subjects are covered in several chapters so you can't really know all you need to of, say, blind structure, until you've read most of the book. This however is not that bad since you are most likely to read the whole thing in a couple of sittings. I actually read it in 2 days during breaks right at work.

The obvious lack of illustrations is also a bit of a problem but the explanations are clear enough.

There are some problems that you will find frequently during your job that the book leaves to the floorperson's decition and gives no information as to what their call might be, it would've been nice to know some options on those subjects.

In spite of these issues, the book is excellent at procedures and gives you the tools to be a true professional, my performance has improved a great deal and the players really appreciate a professional dealer.

Overall the book is great, I have it as a reference and when problems arise that need understanding by the players we can actually take the book and show the proper procedures.

  4. This item was in amazing condition and shipped extremely quick. I can't ask or anything better. Wish every order was like this. Thank you!

  5. The title of my review is a quote from the book, which I gave to my son as a gift for his 21st birthday. He's very happy with it and has already read most of it. The quote is one he took from the book which really spoke to him...practice doesn't make perfect...it makes permanent. Essentially, practicing the WRONG thing won't make you perfect, but it will make a permanent behavior. Since my son's goal is to be a professional dealer, this was a perfect match for him!
