3 comments about The Ultimate Playground & Recess Game Book.
  1. Guy Bailey has put together an extremely helpful resource that has a wide variety of games that are simple, yet fun. I found it to be organized and easy to understand. Most importantly, my students are having a great time participating in the games used! I highly recommend this book to anyone needing fun and creative ideas to enhance their curriculum. Its great!

  2. The Ultimate Playground & Recess Game Book completely lives up to its title and offers classroom teachers, physical education instructors, playground supervisors, youth recreational leaders, and parents more than 170 fun-packed games, sports, and activities for recess and recreational time on the school yard playground, the community park, or the family back yard. Some of these games and sports learned in a school setting or a summer recreation program can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Some of these games will help to reduce student boredom at recess and thereby eliminate a major source of playground behavioral problems. Each game is fully described in a clear, concise, "user friendly" text which is enhanced with more than 150 illustrations to help visualize game directions and setup. An exceptionally useful "Activity Finder" chart makes it simple and quick to find games to meet the needs of the adult supervisors and the children. The Ultimate Playground & Recess Game Book is an indispensable and very welcome addition to any school, summer camp, or family activities reference shelf.

  3. This book is very organized and gives you specific times for each activity. Highly recommended!!

4 comments about Training Thoroughbred Horses.
  1. If you are just starting out in this business, you should read this book. Preston Burch gives you a simple, direct and enlightening understanding of thoroughbred horses. This book may have been published almost 50 years ago but in every advancement man has made we constantly find ourselves going back to old knowledge and wisdom.

  2. If every owner had a trainer like Preston Burch, there would be a lot more owners.

This is a cornerstone book for a racing library. There is a large amount of fundamental training information in this simply written little book.

The sections on conditioning schedules are invaluable. The degree of conditioning Burch afforded his horses is probably unmatched today.

Read this book, and then end it to your trainer (if he can read).

  3. Impossible that present day horses would beat any horse trained by Preston Burch. Just read the exercise prescriptions in this book and be blown away. I certainly was. Here is carefully controlled training by a trainer understanding that his horses are participating in an athletic event. This is a book about conditioning equine athletes and also contains every other aspect of training and caring for thoroughbred race horses in a well written book by an individual who apparently understood the great care required. I held off reading this fearing it was dated, but what a pleasant surprise to find the extreme if succinct comprehensiveness here, every aspect is covered by a fellow who tried to do everything correctly. This is Ivers before Ivers, and one does wonder whatever happened to trainers like Max Hirsch and Preston Burch.

  4. The author writes from legendary experience as a thoroughbred trainer. Of course with any knowledge presented it can not possibly include every little detail regarding the subject but certain it can only enhance the experience one can acquire as a trainer.

Be that as it may, my motive behind purchasing this material was not that of becoming a trainer, but rather to become an outstanding horseplayer. To me, the more a horseplayer can learn about the horses including important details about how thoroughbreds are trained, the better.

This book offers exactly the information desired about training. I truly recommend others reviewing this material and also let me know what you think about the information, perhaps we can dialogue about the sport of training thoroughbreds. All the best! --- Stanley Pall

2 comments about Cunning Lateral Thinking Puzzles (Puzzle).
  1. I have been an avid fan of lateral thinking puzzles from youth upwards. There are a number of "classics" that you come across over and over. If I were to mention the albatross, midget and countless dead bodies, you might know what I mean! However, here we have a compilation of brand new puzzles to satisfy our appetites. These are bright and fresh from novel ideas but they remain faithful to the classical formula. They have the vital lateral twist and retain the ability to leave you either clapping one hand to your forehead in dismay or brimming over with triumph when you succeed.

The variety is of puzzles is worth a mention. There is a wide range of scenarios, including a good number taken from real life. Some are relatively easy whilst an equal number are very difficult. There is something for everyone here - it should suit most tastes.

This book is ideal for entertaining your family or friends for an evening indoors or on a long journey. It will grip their attention, stimulate their imagination and test their lateral thinking skills, in search of the cunning solution!

  2. If you are into "thinking outside the box", these puzzles will occupy your mind for hours.

  1. This puzzle book is on good paper, easy to read and work on. I had hoped it would be spiral bound for ease of working back page puzzles, but it's not. That's the only disappointment. Other than that one complaint, it is a big, easy to use, fun to work, crossword book. I've been able to complete a good percentage of the puzzles (with help from a Xword dictionary), so it's not so difficult that it is discouraging, but at the same time the puzzles are challenging and fun.

  1. This book is EVERY detail you'll ever need to play this game. Game is so intricate, you'd miss so much without it.

  2. I ordered this new direct from amazon because of the great ratings on the included DVD, however, after an extremely long wait, the DVD wasn't included with the guide, so I ordered a replacement copy, same problem! I ended up buying a used one because amazon couldn't supply it. At least they offered me a refund and return postage. Overall a great guide if you can find one with the DVD.

  3. where have you been that you dont own this one and finsihed it twice yet lol a game both genders can love go get it now so you can get and finish GOWII lol

  4. After finding more extensive walkthroughs online I regretted spending the money on this book. Could have bought a game. It is a very well done, glossy book. There are maps and explainations of weapons etc. The game is fantastic and this is a great collectable companion. However. It's not necessary in playing the game. As I mentioned before. You can get walkthrough and other information on the web.

  5. its a good material for new players but unfortunately for myself I didn't find much about what I wanted for the "very hard" mode.

5 comments about Candy Crochet: 50 Adorable Designs for Infants and Toddlers.
  1. I've really enjoyed this book, it's a great source of inspiration and patterns for great baby and little kid items. Recommended!

  2. I love this book! So many cute things for babies and toddlers--girls and boys! The first thing I made I used the yarn used/shown in the book, but I would suggest using more readily available, less expensive yarn when able. I had to order the shown yarn via the internet as it was the only place I could find it, and it was very costly.

  3. I have made a number of items from this book - the granny square hat with earflaps and the matching vest, a cardigan (I think you call it a jacket in America), and two dresses. I always find Candi Jensen's patterns are completely accurate and reliable, and the finished item looks EXACTLY like the picture in the book. The guages are spot on and as I am in Australia, I can't always find her recommended yarn but have never had a problem with substituting - you just must make the time to do a couple of swatches to get the guage right. I would rate myself as an experienced crocheter, but I have used her patterns when teaching friends how to crochet and one friend made the cute little boys striped t-shirt and another friend made one of the simpler boy's vests and they also did very well and were thrilled with the results. So if you want a book that is easy to follow and offers plenty of patterns to choose from from beginners to advanced, this is the book for you. The selection of truly adorable outfits are outstanding, and the baby blankets are just fantastic. I have alot of crochet books for children and this is by far my favourite. Will suit you for both boys or girls - some of the best corchet patterns for boys I have seen, and the girls dresses are really pretty.

  4. This book is a joy of patterns that are new and different. Not the same old afgan type sweaters and blankets.

I couldn't decide which one to make first.

  5. I was looking for a pattern for a little girl's crocheted dress, and found the perfect one and more in Candy Crochet. The designs are GORGEOUS. Some (ok most) crochet clothing seems cheesy, which is why I've stuck to blankets in the past, but these are some seriously wearable designs, and just amazingly beautiful. Plenty of designs for boys too. The instructions are excellent, and the photographs of the finished products are helpful.

  1. What a fun book! The puzzles are creative and challenging. Great for the entire family.

  2. My kids and I had so much fun trying to figure out the puzzles. My daughter is still trying to create a new one that isn't in the book. It really got their minds going.

5 comments about Mental Floss: Cocktail Party Cheat Sheets.
  1. If you do not know mental_floss the magazine, you are in for a treat with this little book. Not only is the information fun and facinating, it is very well organized and you could almost actually use it at a cocktail party!

No mere cataloge of trivia, the editors and contributors engage you while they dispell common myths and give you the actual facts.

Finally, if you are a loyal reader of mental_floss, this book is for you as well, while you may remember some sections from magazine articles, it sure gives you your mental_floss fix until the next mag comes out. Perfect to take to the beach!

  2. For some reason, this slim volume reminds me of the old TV commercial for Silly String which featured a room of yawning guests as a naval officer showed off his ribbons and said, "This is from the Boer War." It's always a good idea to have something up your sleeve to break the ice with strangers that doesn't have to do with the latest edition of People Magazine. After all, you want to have some semblance of an intellect on display to make that right impression.

This is yet another quick-read book from the editors of Mental Floss Magazine, a bimonthly launched in 2001 and targeted to aspiring Trivial Pursuit masters. This particular one, "Cocktail Party Cheat Sheets", is a clever series of possible conversation-starters that will hopefully make one's deep well of knowledge seem impressive without being intrusive. There are 44 topics, a chapter a piece, somewhat random in variety except a certain level of erudition. Each has a brief summary of what it is, an appropriate context in which to bring the topic up, some intriguing trivia facts to boost your interest, and actual suggestions for starting the conversation.

Topics are all over the map though there seems to be a predominance of historical figures covered from Attila the Hun to Miles Davis to Samuel Johnson to the Brontë sisters. The Rosetta Stone, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Magna Carta are included here, and so are the Dutch East India Company and the martini. Of particular interest to me are much-needed snapshots of James Joyce's "Ulysses" and the Qu'ran (Koran). I think it would have been more helpful had there been a better sense of organization about the information, for example, the creative way the editors used school subjects to divide the topics in another of their books, "What's the Difference?". Nonetheless, this is a fun read and well worth it for the hidden facts some of us actually crave.

  3. Somehow they really hit the nail on the head with this one---there are limited topics covered, but they seem to be exactly the topics you think you SHOULD know about but really don't---the Hundred Years War, Samuel Johnson, Virginia Wolff and other like that! The coverage of the topics is light but not just fluff--you really do learn some history, but also learn tasty little facts that really would be fun to use at a party. I read straight through the book and enjoyed it all.

  4. Pretty typical Mental Floss book. Nothing like extremly cocktail about the book, but it the book is still entertaining none the less.

  5. My husband likes this for the bathroom. I like it for the waiting room at the doctor's office, standing in line at the DMV, etc. There was so much stuff I didn't know! I bought it because I really wanted some fodder for conversations at events and fundraisers. I think it will come in very handy!

  1. The crosswords are really fun! The book is lightweight and easy to lay in your lap and fill in the puzzles. The puzzles are quite large so there's enough room to fill in the letters just fine. Great layout!

  2. I must not be the crossword type. Even with 2 masters degrees, I found these crosswords to be too difficult.

  3. Excellent puzzles. Tough enough to challenge without incredible frustration. Great for stress reduction and keeping your mind active. Format is easy to read and the book itself is easy to use. It stays open or can be folded in half.

  4. I was very disappointed with this book. I purchased a new book but the book, while new, was shopworn. The pages were starting to yellow along the edges. The book is printed on cheap paper that makes the crossword hard to read. It is impossible to erase without smearing the lead.

  5. After seeing the movie Wordplay I wanted to try crosswords and have found this book to be great fun!

It is to hard for me to do on my own but my wife and I am able to do it together (we are both newbies).

One fun thing is that puzzles later in the book uses clues used in earlier puzzles so do them in order.

One technique I use is I complete as much of a page as possible, check my answers with the back of the book, and then give it to my wife to complete.

2 comments about Dark Heresy: Purge the Unclean (Dark Heresy).
  1. The production value of the book is well worth the price. I am amazed by the high-quality of what has been put out by the DH line so far. This is not an FFG reprint, but the original Black Industries printing distributed by FFG. This has more new backgrounds to create characters. It also had package deals for starting characters, alternate career paths, elite advance paths, as well as a new career . Furthermore, the equipment section is to drool over...A must for PCs and GMs alike!

  2. This book contains THREE excellent adventures for the Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy role-playing game. All of the adventures take place in the Calixis Sector (i.e., the setting from Dark Heresy). The first adventure, Rejoice For You Are True, is an investigation into a heretical cult. The second adventure, Shades of Twilight, is a fast-paced adventure full of combat and danger within the corridors of a warped space hulk. The characters are even assisted by a Space Marine! The final adventure, Baron Hopes, is a horror-filled look into the corruption of Chaos and rebellion against the Empire.
