5 comments about Dead Rising(tm) Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)) (Official Strategy Guides (Bradygames)).
  1. I love Dead Rising but I wanted to know everything about the game so I got the strategy guide. When looking though the guide I found everything I needed to know and even more, but I soon found that not everything that I needed was in this book (It might be in the book, but it's not easy to find)

The guide starts off pretty good it shows you the controls, moves, characters and story. Next it brings you into a walkthrough that practically tells you actually what to do from who to save, when to take picture, what item you need and where to get them on your way there. It's a very nice walkthrough, tells you everything you need to know.

The only thing that bugs me is at the end of the guide, where they have the list of all the weapons, books, and food items. For instant, the weapons, if you want to know where the BATTLE AX is located it doesn't tell you, but you can find them mention where to grab the BATTLE AX in the walkthrough, so now you have to go searching of it in the walkthrough. Same thing goes for the book they tell you exactly what the book does, but never tells you which book store it's located in. If they just added a map of where all the weapons and book are I would have given it 5 stars.

It's still a good guide but its better as a walkthrough then a guide. And as I mention before, it dose have everything but it's hidden in the walkthrough which you don't really have time to search, since every second counts.

  2. This item was a great help in completing the game with 100% Completed. It is an excellant choice for anyone wanting to master the game.

  3. All maps, characters, secrets, and endings revealed. Get the book, "pwn" the game.

  4. Everything is in this book. Everything. If you're having any trouble with the game, I stongly advise picking this up!

  5. The strategy guide is great!! It is a lot of help for saving time and tips for defeating all the psychopaths. It has a lot of characters that I haven't been able to find playing in the game. It helped me finally beat the game!! Can't wait to go back through and find all the stuff I missed!!

5 comments about The New York Times Easy Crossword Puzzles Volume 8: 50 Monday Puzzles from the Pages of The New York Times (New York Times Easy Crossword Puzzles).
  1. If you like the Times "Monday" puzzles then this is great. I love it

  2. I found this book just what I had ordered and very fun. Thank you

  3. Really enjoyable, interesting but not the Sunday Times puzzle!

    Fun and interesting.

  4. Just recently I become interested in crosswords for the first time, so I picked up this book. The puzzles in it are for the most part very fun and pretty doable, even for a crossword beginner.

My one complaint about this volume is that there are way too many recycled clues in the fifty different puzzles. Perhaps there are just certain basic clues that are common to most puzzles, but I found -- and I am not exaggerating -- no less than 50 clues which were used in multiple puzzles. And I am not talking about just the same answer, but essentially the same clue. After a while this became very annoying. Not a gigantic deal, but it is something that bugged me a little.

    Three stars.

  5. After really enjoying volume 1 through 4 of this series, I bought volume 7. The puzzles are just as great in this one as in volumes 1 through 4, but the titles of the puzzles are missing! This removes some of the fun, as part of doing a crossword is figuring out how the title relates to the puzzle theme. This is an incredible oversight to me--the book claims it was edited by Will Shortz, but I doubt he even looked at it or surely this would have been caught. You're better off sticking to the volumes that are complete.

5 comments about 50 Essential Chess Lessons.
  1. Steve Giddins books seem to hit on some of the most important themes for players to learn and improve their ability to understand and play chess better. Gidden's two books, "50 Essential Chess Lessons" and "101 Chess Traps" being my two favorite Giddins books.
In Giddins "50 Essential Chess Lessons" he selects one or two important themes that he is trying to get across. There is exceptional clarity of thought brought onto paper! Mr. Giddins uses a lot of original games, not easy to find (or impossible to find) elsewhere. This is an excellent book for an intermediate player wanting to improve their overall understanding of chess.

  2. This is one of the best books that uses games as lessons. As a couple of the reviews have pointed it it may not have every move analyzed, but then this is not a book for a lower rated chess player, so it not so critical here.
What is nice is that "50 ESSENTIAL CHESS LESSONS" selects many important themes and is clear and understandable. Among the numerous books using games as lessons, this book is one of the best!

  3. I was very impressed with this book when I read it. It is very instructive for any player beyond the beginning stage and is written in a manner that is like having a master with you to explain what is going on in the game. The author avoids going into any detailed analysis in order to fully explain the ideas in the game.
The games are chosen for their instructive value in illustrating the theme under discussion. In a way, the book is reminiscent of Chernev's "The Most Instructive Chess Games Ever Played." But, I consider this book to be even better.
The serious student of the game cannot go wrong in purchasing this book and by reading it will gain greatly in understanding.

  4. This book is very hard to read. It is also inaccurate and hard to follow. I want to get a refund on this book.

  5. This was an excellent book to work through. As I stated in the review title this book was a just a bit over my head. But not enough over my head that I didn't enjoy it or get something from it. This is a book that I will definitely go to again in a year or so. I imagine I will pick up even more from it then.

I think it is okay to study a little bit of material that is just out of your grasp. It gives me something to aspire to anyway. If you study too much chess material that is a little out of bounds or that is all you study then you might be asking for trouble. Anyway, great book, great games, well written and well constructed. Highly recommended! Gambit really does turn out high quality books. I am talking about the construction of the book itself. They are meant to be used and built to last!

  1. Bored with doing the Friday crosswords in ink? try these. Use a pencil. They made me think.

  2. This volume collects 200 consecutive Friday and Saturday New York Times crosswords originally published between October 25, 1996 and September 25, 1998. Anyone that can power through these challenging puzzles is truly a top solver. With one puzzle to a page both the grid and clues are pleasantly large. At a cost of less than a nickel per puzzle, this 'omnibus' edition offers great value with twice the content of a normal 'NYT Tough' collection.

5 comments about Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia Of Magic: A Complete Course.
  1. This book is not good, great, or awesome, but it's UNBELIEVABLE. The illustrations are very descriptive. When I first got this book I could learn a trick just be looking at the illustrations. (Though you should still read). There are over 17 types of magic listed and taught in the book. Some of these are, Sponge ball magic, Card magic, Cups and balls (the FULL routine), Stage magic, illusions, and more. This is the book to start up on for beginning magic. If you had to get only ONE book of magic, I would suggest purchasing this one. God bless you, and may your future in magic go well.

  2. I recommend without hesitation this book for beginners or intermediates alike. It contains card tricks, sponge balls, cups and balls and even some stage illusions that you might find suitable with a little creativity or modification. It has card tricks that are pretty much already 'public knolwedge' to layman, but you might use them too using the way Mark Wilson teaches you to present them. However, there are also some advanced sleights on cards that beginners can learn easily because of the illustrations and the amazingly, EASY to understand text. Mark Wilson's Cylopedia of Magic. 5 out of 5.

  3. Mark Wilson is no doubt a master magician and a master of all magicians. This is reflected in this volume. The tricks in this book are a mixture of classical as well as new tricks....both entertaining and mystical. Mark Wilson has dealt with every possible branch of close up magic, conjuring and some basic stage illusions. They are easy to do. Some close up tricks require basic sleight of hands which are worth learning. If you are really serious about magic as a hobby, then this book should be in your book shelf. And if you are planning to take it up as your profession, then nothing can be a good book to start with. Some of the basic sleights are still used by many magicians. The illustrations are really gems. The copy which I got from Amazon was a brand new copy though I purchased a used one.
I wish I got this book when I started out on the mystical world of magic 15 years ago.

  4. Mark Wilson is certainly a name in magic and has been around for a very long time. It was on the strength of that name alone that I bought this book, but it wasn't really as comprehensive as I would have liked. Many of the presentations are useful to beginning and intermediate performers as they are. A full time professional like me can fall back on these presentations as well, but over all this is second string material for me.

    [...]

  5. The book is clumsy to handle, due to its thickness and small pages. Nonetheless it contains innumerable card tricks, and a few mind-reading and illusion tricks as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover anything you're likely to see in Las Vegas.

  1. It's pretty cool and tite! It's the coolest book I've ever read! It's the coolest personality book I've ever read. It's the titest and phatest personality book I've ever read!

  2. You don't get much for your money here. If you are looking to learn about the enneagram, you are better off reading a more comprehensive book like "Personality Types" by Riso and Hudson or for more technical reading the work of Claudio Naranjo.

2 comments about Mental Floss: What's the Difference? (Mental Floss).
  1. The editors of Mental Floss Magazine have put together the type of quick-read book I thoroughly enjoy since it boosts your knowledge quotient with a minimum of effort. Launched in 2001, the bimonthly magazine has been targeting renaissance trivialists who look for the connections among seemingly different elements in the world to make sense of their existence. "What's the Difference?" focuses on the common dilemma of clarifying distinctions among a familiar series of seemingly similar word pairs. It will help you avoid the glazed look you may have emitted during your last high-faluting conversation.

This slim volume organizes its subject matter by common school subject - English, Home Ec, Social Studies, Science and the miscellaneous category of Band, Art & P.E. Under English, for example, you will have an opportunity to understand the nuances among geeks, nerds and dorks, as well as the true demarcation line between idiots and morons (hint: imbeciles lie between the two factions). Forehead-slappers will be relieved to see that a definitive explanation of em-dashes and en-dashes is provided here. There are even higher intellectual pursuits included such as the difference between polytheism and pantheism.

Even current events are covered, such as the distinction between Shias and Sunnis. Some of the couplets strike me as a bit more forced than others and consequently excisable, e.g., African versus Asian elephants or Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. But there are still gems among them like Monet versus Manet. It all appropriately ends with a more intentionally humorous chapter on terms and people you may suspect are different but are indeed alike, such as bipolar disorder and manic depression, or Chevy Chase and Helen Hunt (!) A fun read for the geeks among us...or did I mean nerds? Hmmm...

  2. If you are a fan of Mental Floss (trivia with a sense of humor) you will love this book.

  1. I think this concept is great. George Morris has said so many memorable things in the past, it's nice to have many of his writings in one place. However, my only disappointment was with the editing. I have come across many typos, including words missing so sentences don't make sense. It's a shame that such a great book could be marred by something that's so easily managed. Otherwise, good book and I recommend it to others.

  2. Great book for hunter jumper and equitation riders, and other disciplines who are interested in learning more from "The Master!"
