  1. Love this book. If you play, whether it's a friendly or a smoker, this book can help your game with its insights from the players with the biggest stones. Those guys (gender agnostic) are legends and yet seemingly accessible - if only. Dunnett has done it. Even though I recommend it, I'm tempted to keep to myself and use it for the potential ill-gotten gains from less informed competitors.

5 comments about Handicapping 101: Finding the Right Horses and Making the Right Bets.
  1. This is a must-have book on horseracing handicapping. Don't be fooled by its title into thinking this book is only for beginnners - in fact it should become a handicapping classic. Over the last eight years, I have read many horseracing handicapping books - some good, some bad, but this is my clear favorite. Well-written, easy to understand, and it explains very well the four main handicapping factors - condition/form, class, overall speed, and pace. And, it provides guidelines on how these four factors are applied at the various class levels. The first time I applied the author's guidelines to a maiden claiming race I hit a 28-1 winner. From my experience, I am firmly convinced that successful horseracing handicapping long-term can not be achieved by a computer program or a mathematical method/system. But, you can achieve a positive ROI long-term by applying the handicapping guidelines set forth in this book and making value bets, not just betting on the likely winner in every race. Buy this book - it will pay for itself many times over - it sure has for me.

  2. I used to be a recreational player. I would go Santa Anita once a year and spend anywhere from 20.00 to 100.00 dollars. I never won, except for an occasional place bet. I never understood the game to be honest with you, but it was purely enjoyable entertainment. I saw Brad Free's book advertised in the program, and ended up buying the book. I bought the book with the intentions of learning the bare basics of handicapping and to know how to read the charts in the paper.

Well I got a lot more than that! As I was reading the book I wanted to try some of the things I learned and would go to the track often. Brad Free covers every aspect of handicapping. This is a book that is in your library and that you refer to often.

The chapter "The Wagering Menu" was very enjoyable. I used his method on the Superfecta at Hollywood Park, and won 796.30. It was a great feeling. However I thought his Pick-4 techniques were confusing.

I would have liked it better if there was an index. I hate thumbing through the book to find something in particular. Also a glossary would have been helpful, because sometimes I didn't have a clue what he was talking about with all the jargon, slang, and lingo that are used by horseplayers.

  3. Handicapping 101. Is the best book for understanding what to look for in handicapping.

  4. As an entry-level/novice handicapper wanting to learn everything I can, a friend of mine suggested Handicapping 101 as the opening read. He couldn't have been more on target.

In reality, the title almost doesn't do the text justice, for it's far more than the "101"-level information you'd expect. While the four main areas of handicapping may be the starting points, they are explained in fine detail without sounding as if you are listening to a lecture or reading a thesis. Free mixes in just enough from his personal handicapping experiences (both successful and not) to add flavor to the text and to bring the information presented to life.

This book alone will not make you into a professional horseplayer, and you shouldn't read it with that intent. But if you are like me and trying to learn, with an eye toward taking handicapping very seriously down the road - this is a must-read. What this book will do is:

    A) Enlighten you as to what you have been doing wrong when you were at the track "for fun." (read: not leaving with any money and calling the money you lost the "cost of entertainment)

    B) Give you enough information in an enjoyable text that will be much more knowledge than many others bring to the track on race day (as in, all those folks who in category A.)

    Absolutely worth it.

  5. Brad Free's Handicapping 101 was the first book I read when I started to become involved in horse racing. This is a perfect guide for beginners and is probably the best book to get started with. Advanced players also could gain from scrubbing up on the basics, but for the most part, the advanced player will already be familiar with a majority of the ideas/topics in this book.

  1. This is the second book on the same subject. This one teaches you more ideas for pop-up cards. Also shows you how you can make GIANT pop-ups that can be used for playing in and around-sort of a scene for kids to build around. Again written for children but a good book for beginners in making pop-ups.

  2. I am always look for ways to intergrate Art into my 7th Grade English classes. We have a unit of making non-fiction books. This is a GREAT way to boost kids' creativity as they look for ways to illustrate their books. The instructions are easy to follow and require almost no explaining by me.

4 comments about The Complete Table Saw Book.
  1. The competent and collaborative effort of expert woodworkers Chris Marshall and Mark Johanson, The Complete Table Saw Book: Step-by-Step Illustrated Guide To Essential Table Saw Skills, Techniques, Tools And Tips is an excellent methodically presented, do-it-yourself manual to the art and craft of joinery techniques, table saw jigs, woodworking with sheet goods, and more. Enhanced with full color illustrations on almost every page, superbly showcasing an in-depth text, and a narrative tone that communicates clearly with experts and novices alike, The Complete Table Saw Book is a "must-have" for anyone who, as a hobby or a career, needs to master the versatile uses of this woodworker's tool.

  2. Written primarily for the beginning to intermediate table saw user "The Complete Table Saw Book" provides thorough coverage of the art of using a table saw. The first part of the book examines the table saw itself and the coverage is excellent. Starting with an education on the various parts of the table saw it progresses through different types, blades, and functions. Next comes a thorough section on table saw maintenance and how to select a used table saw. The analysis of what to look for and how to determine the condition of a used saw is very detailed and well illustrated.

The next section covers basic cuts, joinery techniques, sawing accessories and basic jigs. One of the things that I really liked about the book is the detailed information on making your own jigs. Making the cuts to create a specific joining method is fine but it can be a pain to do several of them in a row by hand. So, he not only teaches how to make the cuts to make the join but also teaches how to make a jig so that it can be used to make the cuts quicker and easier. This shows that the author not only knows his joining techniques but also has the real life knowledge of how professional woodworkers actually do it. The last section of the book contains several projects you can make using your table saw. These projects include various cabinets, a play table and chairs, and an entertainment center.

"The Complete Table Saw Book" is an excellent reference that I can highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn about table saws and how to use them for everything from basic cutting to cabinetry. Filled with illustrations so you can easily understand everything in it, you can't go wrong with this book.

  3. For me, buying a new table saw is not only a cause for celebration, but an opportunity to shuffle through the shelves to find a book about my new toy. This one struck my eye - mostly because it was thicker than the others, was well laid out and seemed to cover all the salient points. Possibly not the best criteria in the world, but they have stood me in good stead for a long time now.

For the most part, my initial assessment was accurate. The editor Tom Carpenter, has gone out of his way to maintain a solid, plainspoken approach to the subject matter, with a great number of illustrations and photographs. I can honestly say that there are enough ideas, pointers, and explanations to greatly enhance what you get for what is often the most expensive piece of equipment in the shop.

Chapters cover Basics, Tune-up & Maintenance, Chosing Saw Blades, Basic Cuts, Joinery Techniques, Sawing Accessories, and Essential Jigs. That covers the first 160 pages. The second section, which is about the same size, is devoted to some information about Woodworking With Sheet Goods and a collection of ten projects.

This latter section, while useful, is not up to the same level of quality is the first part. Not that it's shabbily done, but that the projects, which range from a bookshelf to an entertainment center, are a bit clunky looking. They are training projects rather than works of art. As such there is a good deal of explanation to help the budding sawyer.

  4. The Complete Table Saw Book is useful for beginners and for those who have basic experience but have not been doing precision cutting. I found it helpful in setting things up and doing some semi-precise things. I expect to get a lot more out of it in the next few months as I get into more detailed projects.

  1. If you like walking your way to the end of a game with Nancy Drew as your Partner then I suggest you get this game, and the guide! The game is a little more challenging than the last several put out so be prepared to take along the hadny dandy Official Stategy Guide! This guide has everything in it from clues to pictures, but NOT the ENDING, that's right everyone! Our friends at Her Interactive does us a big favor by NOT giving away the ending so that We can figure out that part on our own! So I give this guide a Big Thumbs Up!

  2. A game this intricate sometimes needs a little help (in case you get stuck). The photos of the scenes on the monitor are small, black & white and sometimes a little too dark. The print is small. The price is definitely for the information. It is more cost effective to buy the guide as a set with the game software.

  1. Good guide,it really helped having as fast as I did.

  2. I like RTS games and C&C3 is a great game but it's can be difficult sometimes, especially in missions and this guide make a real good job with its walkthroughs of the three campaigns. If you get stucked in some mission, this guide can help you a lot to pass the mission, not only with primary objectives but with bonus objectives too.

The guide asumes you are playing in "hard" difficult so you can get all the achievements. It also give you in-depth stats about units and structures and a table comparison of all of this.

It contains multiplayer maps with tips and strategies for xbox live gaming. In addition, the guide contains a controller scheme card, very useful if you are new to C&C3 in Xbox 360.

5 comments about The Little Capoeira Book.
  1. This book has been out for quite a while now and even now, in 2006 the book is still helpful. I'm new to the Capoeira lifestyle and reading this book has been extremely helpful in gaining more knowledge about the history as well as the many different movements involved with this awesome martial art.

I definitely recommend this book to newbies and more seasoned capoeristas. I may be a little "slow" but while the illustrations are great, I got a little confused when trying to "flow" through the movements but by reading, you'll figure it out and they'll begin to feel right.

    Hope this helps...enjoy!

  2. I grant I'm starting out but this book has amazing insight on the philosophy and moves. Reminding that creativity is as important as learning the moves that have come from those before us. He also gives exersies that can be done when a person can't get to the roda of his instructor/mestre. After this book I'm gonna have to read more books about capoeira as well as from Nestor cause he was able to explain more than I thought could be put in a book.

  3. I found this book to be an entertaining and informative read which discusses the game of capoeira on many levels from the philosophy through to movements and drills. It's a well rounded book and I reccomend that you give it a read if you are interested in capoeira (and even in philosophy).

  4. great read for people new to capoeira that want to have a more comprehensive review of the history, music, and game. also has an interesting review of a conference that discusses capoeira in US and Europe, which is very useful to read to learn about the different trends and mestres around. definitely recommend it!

  5. I'll be perfectly honest. With my short attention span I have at times, I havn't done much in the way of practicing through the use of this book. But what I have practiced using it, I was able to figure out easily thanks to the diagrams and explanations in it. This book was also able to make me hold the interest I first had in Capoeria before finding it with the additional sections that talk about the styles history and the philosiphies behind the art.

If you want a book on Capoeria that will hold your attention for a good long time, than you'll deffiantley want this one! Just don't assume that you'll be able to catch on to the style immediatley though, this book also proves that Capoeria isn't something you can pick up right away. ;D
