  1. As everyone else has mentioned, this book contains wonderful introductions to the techniques and vocabulary of fine woodworking. In addition, it also can be a great introduction to the use of hand tools, for those who might be familiar with power tools and woodworking in general, but with no hand tool experience.

    One of my favorite things about this book is that the author, Peter Korn, is not afraid to give recommendations for which tools to buy and which you can do without. He sometimes will even recommend a specific brand of tool, which is great since tools may all look the same even though they are most certainly not built the same.

    Overall, a great purchase.

  3. I had nothing but a curiosity about woodworking when Amazon brought this book to my attention as a highly rated book for beginners. This book does an absolutely fabulous job of boiling the craft down to the basics for readers unfamiliar with the subject.

    This book will not make you a master in any technique, nor will it cover anything in particular detail. What it will do is give you an introduction to wood, common tools (both hand and powered), and basic techniques for making fine furniture. This book was the beginning of an addiction for me, and for that I am grateful!


  4. I read this book with knowing almost nothing about this subject. Though I have not tried to use the knowledge presented in this book in a practical sense, I feel that I have gained enough insight from this book to begin to do so. This book will probably be appreciated the most by those that are seeking a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of woodworking. If you are already working with wood, this book is probably not for you. For those of you who are not, this book will provide a foundation from which to do so. I would not rely on this book alone though as the only source of information on this subject, as it seems it is not comprehensive enough to encompass the whole of the subject matter.


  5. First, I'd suggest you ignore the less than five star reviews; The authors don't seem to get the point.

    This book is not about specific technique. It is about the thought process you go through in selecting and applying a technique. It is about approaching things from a self-conscious perspective of Craftsmanship in woodworking. That probably sounds like the mystical-babble that most practical craftsman hate, but I found myself in complete sync with the author's thought process in about the first four paragraphs of the introduction, and I am all about practicality.

    As so many of the other reviewers have noted, I wish I had found this book years ago and started with it, but then I might not have understood it at that point.

  1. When I read The Ultimate Guide to Videogame Writing and Design I was expecting quite a lot from a title like that. As a well read veteran game designer with over 34 million units sold to date, as well as game design professor at USC, I thought I had seen every element and angle in game development. Not only that, at USC we have developed a pretty robust curriculum on how to build great narrative into a solid game. To my amazement, my high expectations were not only met, but exceeded by a wide margin with this book! Ultimate Guide is extremely well thought out and presented in a no nonsense manner, with many excellent examples, points, and tips on not only writing, but also how to survive and prosper in the game industry. I guess it comes as no surprise since this book is practically a FedEx straight from the front lines, as these authors are still writing top games, and have written a number of "Story of the Year" games over the last five years. These guys have written for both film and interactive, and they know how to bring solid storytelling craft into the game space. I recommend this book to all my students as well as colleagues as a must read. You will not find a more straight forward and to the point book packed with real world examples anywhere. This is more than a "how to" book, but also a "how come" as it focuses down precisely on the challenges and pitfalls of game design and writing today from a variety of angles. I guarantee it will provide insights and value to both new and veteran game writers, as well as designers who are looking to bridge the gap between solid storytelling and great gameplay. I wish I'd had this book when I was starting out! But I'm sure glad I have it now!


  2. this book is chock-full of incredibly useful information about writing and game design. many of the classic traps in this area of game development can be avoided by following flint and john's advice here. everything is outlined in a very clean and (not surprisingly) fun and witty read.

    as a game developer for 10 years now, i found information in this book that i'll be using in the future and i can't recommend this book enough. these guys get it, and so should you.

  5. Though I've been mostly interested in writing for animation and comics, while playing video games I questioned who came up with it's stories. Many games have little to no stories and focus mostly on mindless entertainment...which isn't always a bad thing. But some video game stories really touch the viewer (Half Life 2, Final Fantasy, Bioshock, etc. come to mind.)

    On a whim I bought this book and have enjoyed it immensely. Both the authors provided much more than I was hoping for. Both are seasoned game writers/designers who have worked on many games you know, and are still working on games. Stuff like UNCHARTED - DRAKE'S FORTUNE, CRIMSON SKIES, PROJECT ORIGIN, and FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY - THE GAME. These guys know what they are doing.

    The book breaks down not only how to write for games, but what that entails, hardships you will find along the way (both with writing and people), they provide sheets you can fill out to create your own game bible to pitch. And as an added bonus they occasionally have writing exercises to help you hone your craft or understnad a point better.

    Leave no stone unturned and that's what these two have done. It has my highest regards! Buy it and truly educate yourself.

  1. If you're semi-new to the game and never ran the dungeons listed in this guide, then this will come in very handy. Most of us old-school WoW players know the info provided, but not all of it. I'm an Alliance player but when I created a Horde character this guide helped loads with instance quest info and such. And I still use it when trying to remember the pattern for the ST statues on my alts. ^_^;;

    Good Features:
    - Instance maps.
    - Very detailed walkthoughs and strategies for each instance.
    - General info about all instances such as level, location, types of mobs within, etc. so you're always prepared.
    - Details about every quest associated with the dungeon. This includes chain quests. (I want to express how awesome this part is... It tells you the quest givers, where to find them, the level requirement, description on what to do to complete the quest, and where to turn it in. Even lists rewards.)
    - Pictures of the instance. Hey, pictures are always good!

    Bad Points:
    - The loot table needs work. It's horribly organized and laid out.
    - The suggested "group make ups" and tips are off. Most of it is oppinionated and incorrect. (Other than the general "Need a tank, healer, CC, DPS" parts.... which are "duh")
    - You could get all this info on thottbot or other sites for free. =P (However I personally like to have a solid book full of info to read when I'm off the comp or whatever. But that's just me.)

    So yeah, go ahead and pick it up. Even if you're like me and don't really "need" it, or you use thottbot... it's still a nice guide for the price and you can take it with you wherever. If nothing else it's an interesting read.


  2. A seemingly good idea in concept, an unbelievably bad idea in reality.
    These guides suffer from a few issues, that ultimately make them a bad purchase.

    (1.) Obviously a printed guide for an online game, won't be up-to-date, but these guides are hopelessly out of date. This fact alone makes these guides a complete and total waste of money. If you really want a guide, buy the .PDF version from Brady's website or ask Amazon to carry the .PDF version. The .PDF version is updated periodically throughout the year.

    (2.) Due to the nature of all the games being released at any given time, there are lots of guides to write. Understandably they must be pressed for time. But these guides seem to have be so rushed that there are typos, incorrect information and missing information. Mistakes like these can make the guide unusable at times.

    (3.) Any guide will likely be used by newer players. They will need to find information quickly and easily. Whoever setup these guides doe not understand information design or the essential needs of a new player. Even if you skip reason 1 and 2, when you actually use the guide, you will likely be frustrated many times.

  3. For many WoW players, one of their first group activities is the dungeon adventure. Therefore, this book isn't just good in showing you how to defeat the big boss and what great loot is there, it also gives you hints on how to interact with the other players. And let's face it, the screen loading hints only tell you so much! With this guide, there is a lot of info on what each class can do and how best to be part of a team, so that you don't anger the other players by accident or on purpose. After all, WoW is first and foremost a multiplayer game, and the dungeon adventure is the biggest element of the mutliplayer interactivity (other than PVP).

    This book can use an update, but even in this state, it's still very useful today. Highly recommended for a novice WoW player.


  4. There is no doubt you have spent your money in the right place if you buy this book. Wanna run dungeons one time, with all the quests in your log, buy this book and its made simple.


  5. This reference work may have been more helpful when it first came out, but now it lags behind the actual content that it is attempting to reveal. The work covers all of the instances from the original game (before any patches) and does so in alphabetical order as opposed to a more-helpful level-of-instance organization. On its own merits, it provides a sound basic understanding of the instances level 1-60 players may encounter. In addition, it also goes into the single and chain quests for each faction that are part of each dungeon--especially helpful if you want to go after Onyxia, for example, which involves the longest chain in the pre-BC game.

    The work does suffer from several problems, though. Blizzard has released numerous patches and updates since the book's publication, rendering much of the content obsolete. The typeface and layout of the book tend to be quite wearying on the eyes, so spending a lot of time reading it in one sitting is not advisable. Finally, Brady seems to have cut the budget for proofreading, as there are numerous spelling and typographical errors in the work. This last point may seem trivial, but if WoW had as many mistakes in it as this book has, gamers would have run away from it in frustration long ago.

    While this work is still helpful in several aspects, its age (in computer gaming terms, anyway) prevents it from being an end-all, be-all for the WoW gamer. The reader should use it for a general overview of what a dungeon is all about, but then should use the constantly-updated resources online to give the specifics as to how to run each dungeon and to keep up with all the modifications that Blizzard has made since this work's publication.

  1. It arrived in good shape and in a reasonable amount of time. It replaced my copy which had been lost. I am happy with the purchase.


  2. I received the books earlier than expected and they were in great condition, just as stated.


  3. I have been a fan of this Genre for a long time now. I have been looking for a good storyline that would keep me interested for some time (longer than just one book). This is a great set of stories. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and the action is frequent and descriptive. As other reviewers have stated, the typos and grammatical errors are quite numerous, but they're easy to overlook if you're not too anal about them. I blew through this book rather quickly because it was hard to put down. I highly recommend it.


  4. Overall I enjoyed this series, the first I've read from Salvatore. The characters are interesting and most of it was developed pretty well. My major beef is that the combat lost all interest to me early on - and there's a lot of it throughout the series. The problem is that the odds are always overwhelming and the heroes generally come out of it with a few scratches. Every new battle seemed like it was 5 or 10 to 1. Why not 100 to 1 then? After I realized that the heroes were always going to come out fine, it was just a matter of seeing how it played out, which was sometimes interesting, but mostly just unrealistic due to the odds. [Spoiler] I kept hoping that Salvatore would have the guts to kill off a major character, but even when it seemed like he did, that character comes back. The hordes of enemies can't seem to touch our heroes and they're apparently all imbeciles for not resorting to ranged weapons / more advanced tactics once in a while. You might argue that this is keeping with the spirit of D&D-based games, but I don't think so. You survive in the games by having a well balanced party and ways to get healed.


  5. I grew up having only read J.R.R. Tolken. These books are great! I never picked up another fanasy book thinking how could any another be as good.
    It wasn't till last year a friend gave me Homeland. That's were it all started for me. I just started The Legacy. I cannot put these books down. So far I have been immersed in this awesome world R.A. Salvatore has created. Some freinds of mine say they are envious that I am enjoying these books for the first time. I am glad I have many more to go.
    I highly suggest Starting right with The Dark Elf Trilogy, Icewind Dale Trilogy, Legacy Of The Drow Collectors Edition, Paths of Darkness, then on to Cleric Quintet. Your in for some great reading!

  2. This book is one of the best I've read until now. It is really a pleasure to read it for hours and hours.


  3. I bought this book for a specific purpose: to learn more about drawing Rook vs Rook + pawn endings. I've been working through Convekta's Chess Endgame Training and have found that many exercises end in a position declared a draw but that would still leave me nervous as the weaker side. One strong player told me that every Russian schoolboy know those drawn positions. Oh, to be a Russian schoolboy.

    IM Silman's book does indeed address these positions in some detail. Initially, I was not able to find the information, having relied on a quick scan and a look in the index, which has no entry for 'draw'. I sent IM Silman's an email asking why such important information had been omitted. I was surprised to receive a warm and helpful email in reply that explained that, in the spriit of the book itself, infromation about R vs R + P endings was introduced in stages throughout the book. He also mentioned Emms book on rook endings which contains the same material but compacted into one place over 13 pages.

    I prefer IM Silman's treatment because ultimately the collected pieces form a more thorough whole.

    Overall, the book is a treasure. I don't know of another work that is so accessible, yet complete. Previously I had to make due with the interesting but error-ridden Endgame Course by Pandolfini. One thing I do like about Pandolfini's book is the catchy names he applies to endgame techniques and positions. IM Silman also uses that mneumonic technique but to a lesser extent.

    I had also previously relied on Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual. That is a superb reference book but not friendly to someone learning the ropes. For example, Dvoretsky has a page on corresponding squares. It became clear that I was not comprehending the nuances of what he was saying. I tried and tried. In the end I bought Müller and Lamprecht's Secrets of Pawn Endings which covered the same concept but over the course of a dozen pages. Then I got it. I think.

    IM Silman's book, on the other hand, is designed so that there are no unresolved mysteries at each stage. Its a nice concept and well done.

    The only thing that keeps me from giving the book a full five stars is the single-column format. The book is beautifully laid out and with generous diagrams but I remain convinced the a two column layout is superior.


  4. Silman is a master at understanding the mentality of someone that doesn't already know what he's about to teach them. His ever pragmatic and often humorous approach is much appreciated in an endgame book, as most books on that phase of the game tend to be on the dry side.

    My only quibble is that he seems to back off of complexity in the later "courses" in favor of more abstract advice. My gut feeling is that at the higher levels it is even more important to know specific techniques and concepts, like knight and pawn vs knight, queen and pawn vs queen, basic techniques for queen vs rook, rook and pawn vs knight/bishop and pawn(s), and so on. Also, the section on the "five greatest endgame players of all time" seemed a little perfunctory somehow, perhaps because most of the games he selected there occur in so many other anthologies.

    Overall, though, a wonderful and much needed addition to chess literature.


  5. Jeremy Silman is certainly one of the world's best chess writers. His "Reassess Your Chess," pretty much universally acknowledged as a great chess book, has helped countless people enjoy chess to a greater extent (myself included). His "Complete Book of Chess Strategy" covers the basics in a clear, concise way. His "Reassess Your Chess Workbook" is a valuable learning tool for any chess player. And the list goes on.

    But here, Silman chose a different topic from his other books. His "Endgame Course" concentrates entirely on the endgame, a mysterious, and quite beautiful realm of a chess game that too few players really know much about. Seeing that many consider the endgame to be boring and unimportant, Silman sought to create a book that not only taught the player many endgame secrets, but showed the reader the beauty and fascination of an endgame, that instilled a love of the endgame in the reader. He has succeeded admirably.

    The book is divided into chapters, one for each rating group. Thus, you can concentrate on which material would be appropriate for your rating level (or your estimated rating level.) For the least experienced beginners, Silman presents such simple topics as overkill mates, etc. As we move up the rating ladder, we find such topics as Opposition, Rook Endings, the Lucena and Philidor positions, and eventually, a fun chapter on endgame tactics. The book is ending by a fascinating chapter on the five greatest endgame players of all time. I don't know how he does it, but Silman managed to make each topic fun and interesting to learn, all by using wit and humor. Even the descriptions contained in the back of the book detailing recommended endgame books are fun-to-read. Who knew chess-reading could be so much fun?

    With fun, yet with great depth, Silman explored a part of chess that I previously would have nothing to do with. Now, I'm and endgame expert and I had a great time becoming one, thanks to this great book. Recommended for ANY chess player. We all need to know the secrets of the endgame, and there is no better way to accomplish this than by using this book.

  1. Bought this as a present for my father who is a geography teacher and has just gotten into geocaching as a hobby. An excellent introductory guide to the hobby, easy to read and entertaining.


  2. I'm going to get right to the point. This book is great. It does exactly what it claims, and nothing less. It's a perfect introductory guide to geocaching, but I'm sure experienced cachers can gain something from it also. It is informative, well written, and purposeful. I also would like to pmention that it is the official guide book of [...], the company that runs [...]. Lastly, I would like to point out that the only 2 bad reviews of this book that were posted at the time that I'm writing this are from someone that didn't receive the book in the mail and therefore is angry at amazon (why they take it out on THIS book, i have no idea), and some PhD in psych that cant even read a map (she admits this in her post)... go figure. In closing, I am very satisfied with this book and am glad that this is the guidebook I chose to help get me started with geocaching. Happy Hunting

    Arrggh, I'm tired of dragging my butt out of bed at 5:30AM, rushing to a thankless job, and punching a time clock. I want to sleep in, have exotic fruit for breakfast and wash it all down with rum. After lounging in my hammock, I'll head out with my crew, capture a ship, and finish in time to enjoy one of those cool, tropical drinks with the little umbrella. What other job can you hang around a boat all day with guns and booze, and make tons of money? I mean, other than war profiteering, or politics. I want to be a modern day pirate.

    There are those who scour the globe today in search of treasure, using only a compass as their guide, in a hunt where X no longer marks the spot, but it seems they prefer the term Geocacher. Geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt in which participants search for hidden caches using coordinates and a GPS device. The caches can range from small to large, and the treasure found inside isn't in the form of doubloons or pieces of eight, but small trinkets like baseball cards, Matchbox cars, or prizes like gift certificates, event tickets, or even cash.

    Geocaching combines "geo" for geography and "cache," a term used for both hidden provisions and in a more modern sense, data stored on a computer. Combine them and you have one of the newest and hottest outdoor activities around. Hey, how do you legally tap into an outdoor game that has a government budget of more than half a billion dollars? No, what your uncle is doing with that cable box and a coat hanger to get WrestleMania(tm) isn't legal.

    The goal of geocaching is to locate hidden treasure from latitude/longitude coordinates found on websites such as Geocaching.com or handed out in passbooks at geocaching events like the one upcoming in Wellsboro on May 16th, 17th, and18th. While most caches are a hidden watertight box, this event sponsored by the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce* is set up with "Virtual Caches." It's the destination, not the booty, that's of interest, bringing you to historic sites, beautiful vistas, and a wonderful view of nature. Nothing is traded except photos and the experience. Each of the caches can be driven to, with some requiring only a brief walk.

    I talked to Charlie Messina, the driving force behind Wellsboro's new event. Charlie began geocaching in 2003 as part of a Boy Scout camp program. He developed and ran orienteering events** and felt that geocaching would allow a new program to be added with minimal expense. "The program was a huge success, and added a new level of enjoyment as we searched for hidden caches and found great outdoor locations we would never have found. In basic terms geocaching is a high-tech hide & seek. Anyone with a GPS unit and a basic understanding of how to use it can enjoy an outdoors adventure. It is great fun for the entire family"

  1. I just got this book yesterday and LOVE IT! Only getting through the first few pages and already set my 33-Things To Do when I turn 33! Its an easy way to infuse creativity into everyday life which is exactly what I was looking for. Were all busy with family, work, obligations, and life in general This book is a good way to keep focused but still keep play and fun on your mind!


  2. I loved the little book which has plenty of exercises to fuel my creative energy.


  3. I find Living Out Loud to be an uplifting and hope filled little book--and I haven't even done any of the exercises yet! It is a "story" of permission--and don't we all need permission--to have fun, to be ourselves, to enjoy the moment. Keri gives us that permission.


  4. I love Keri Smith's books! I bought "Wreck This Journal" first at SFMOMA and fell in LOVE!!! This book rocks...the projects are fun and not time consuming. I do things like this with my husband or when friends come over. It feels wonderful to spend time and have a product or experience rather than an empty tub of popcorn or wine bottle. Try it!


  5. This book has some okay ideas, but overall I was disappointed. It's not really what I thought it would be. I was expecting it to be sort of on the order of Wreck This Journal (which I love), but it sort of reminds of a self help book.

  1. As a reference that covers all aspects of the game, this book cannot be beat. It is easy to read, yet packed with information, and everything is here, including pre-flop, flop, turn, and river play, the importance of position, pot odds, raising, check-raising, bluffing, semi-bluffing, starting hand values, analyzing and playing to your opponents, the different types of players (tight vs. loose, passive vs. aggressive), bankroll management, internet vs. casino play, and more.

    There are other books that cover some of these aspects of play, but I have found no other book that describes them in a manner that is this easy to understand while having plenty of detail at the same time.

    This is definitely one of the first poker books that you should read, and I am certain that you will find this to be a useful reference. I can see this as being a resource that I will refer to often as I continue to learn the game and build my experience.


  2. Prefacing these remarks with the fact that I know very little about any type of card game (except Crazy Eights, Old Maid and Gin Rummy) I found this book both informative and entertaining. Mr. Harlan has a way with words that educates us Dummies in a manner that is not condescending in the least. His stated assumptions that we understand the basis of a normal deck of playing cards, plus simple but detailed descriptions of how play advances at the table, make this volume an enjoyable read. The sidebar stories and trivia tidbits are classic Harlan; in fact, the reader could ignore the main text and just read the anecdotal information to learn a LOT about the game. I received the book as a gift; it is a welcome addition to my library.


  3. This book was a nice read and I really enjoyed some of the information that was presented in this one. Some information was new that other books, including ones that claim to teach you the secrets of the pros, decided to leave out. My only complaint is, that it being a For Dummies books makes a lot of references to "We'll cover this later" or "Head back to Chapter 7 for a review on this "


  4. A great boof for beginners! I have just started plating poker and this book has really helped me understand the game!

    Also, provides some neat strategies.


  5. Harlan's text is light and fun to read, yet very useful, concise and to the point. Differently than other poker books that scare you away by starting off with a lot of math and statistics and pot odds, Harlan goes through many other important and interesting poker stuff such as optimal starting hands, betting strategy for each round and table position, reading your opponents, different sorts of game - home, online, casino - before spaeking abouth the math (which, byt he way, he does in a very agreeable way, keeping it simple and straightforward - maybe because he knows his stuff - he is an applied math degree). the book also has easy to follow examples and real life anecdotes, keeping all that poker theory closer to what the average player will encounter at next Saturday's $10 poker night over his friends. It's definitely the first book on Texas Holdem you should buy, and you'll learn an awful lot from it.

  1. This is a very concise yet thorough review of bidding presented in a pocket guide. It is a must have for the novice to intermediate player who is still unsure of the bidding process. It also provides a quick summary for declarer play as well as defense play in a trump or no trump hand. I love it!!!! Highly recommended!

  3. I have been sumarizing bidding options for a quick review before a game in my computer. There is no longer a need this is a great reference. It also fits exactly in your convention card holder so that between rounds you can easily check up on something that you have a question about. Wonderful for the beginner or intermediate player. Advanced player would have to much ego to pull it out in public but get it for private review in the potty stall or at home because it is a great review. great to have for at home rubber games with family or friends that are learning. Good gift for that partner that can't get on the same page with you. HaHa. Play more bridge and bid it up!!!
