- I guess you would have to say I'm a New York Times crossword puzzle fanatic. But because this book was edited by Fred Piscop, known to me from his occasional puzzles at the Times, I decided to give this collection a try. Well, I was amply rewarded. These are moderately difficult Sunday puzzles (and you know what I mean if you do the Times Sunday puzzles) which are just enough different from those in the Times that they represented a pleasant challenge for me. Piscop's sense of humor, as seen in the definitions, is unique (and different from that of the NYT's Will Shortz) and I literally found myself laughing out loud at times.
Scott Morrison
- I Have worked nearly all of the Sunday NYTimes crosswords. Was really looking forward to the same or higher level of difficulty and originality. Unfortunately, this didn't have it. You would think that puzzles published in DC by such a well respected paper would offer a more challenging bit of entertainment.

- Puzzlers know that the Sunday Times crosswords are not necessarily the hardest ones--those are the puzzles that appear on Fridays and Saturdays in the Times--but they are much bigger, about half again as large as the daily puzzles. And they also have a title--which helps the solver to figure out what the puzzle's theme might be--and they supply name the constructor of the puzzles, something that doesn't occur with the daily puzzles.
Doing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle is a habit with many of the Times's readers, but for those of us who don't live in New York or buy the Sunday Times, this is the next best thing. I know I wouldn't be able to feel like a Sunday was complete until I had done the Sunday puzzle.
My method, in case anyone is interested, is to tear each puzzle page out and put it on a clipboard. That way one doesn't have to deal with any awkwardness from trying to do the puzzles while holding a largeish book, although I've done that, too. Also, this allows for your pencil marks to remain crisp whereas if you leave the puzzle in the book the softness of the underlying pages makes your pencil marks a little blurry.
Make no mistake, these are wonderful puzzles and the price is very reasonable.
Scott Morrison
- Whilst the puzzles in this book are regular Sunday size, the grids are smaller than I like, which makes it kind of difficult to read the numbers in the boxes. Also, I would say 80% of these were printed in the Wall Street Journal Omnibus which I received for Christmas, and would recommend that one of 250 puzzles with larger grids.

2 comments about The New York Times Large-Print Crossword Puzzle Omnibus Volume 3 (New York Times Large Print Crossword Puzzle Omnibus).
- I bought a BUNCH of these large print New York Times Crossword books for my Mom including this one. She was ardent about solving them and felt they helped her in maintaining her mental powers. I would have to agree on that. The large print really IS large and seemed too big to me at first but they were easier for her to savor and work on at her own pace. They also have puzzles you can subscribe to and receive through the mail. I was surprized and delighted during a visit to see that she and a friend worked on them together. They're a terrific resource for an aging parent and well worth the price for the stimulation !!
- Always entertaining, educational, and sometimes frustrating, but that's NOT the fault of the Times!

2 comments about The New York Times Super Saturday Crosswords: The Hardest Crossword of the Week.
- I was completely disappointed in this book. It is quite possible that these puzzles ran on Saturdays in 1993 and 1994, as the copyright notation indicates. They are not, however, remotely in a league with the current Saturday level of difficulty. This is deceptive advertising at its most crass. It reflects very poorly on the editor, Will Shortz (who currently edits the NYT puzzles and surely knows that what I am saying is true), on the Times itself, and on Amazon, which ought to stop selling this slim but nevertheless sleazy volume.
- it isn't easy to find difficult puzzles. this book is great. i wish there were more of them. the harder the better. thank you

- These crosswords are perfect for my eldery mother who has poor eyesight. She is in a nursing home, and these puzzles keep her busy and also help her mind to stay sharp. So far, I have gotten books 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 for her. I still have to find #3!

- I wish this puzzle book would have been spiral-bound like Ms. Jacobson's previous regular volumes.
- Maura Jacobson's puzzles are the best!!! She is too clever for words, pun intended.
- I love the weekly crosswords and do them every week in new York magazine, but these are obviously older puzzles with more obscure references. I would recommed getting one of the newer omnibuses, like version 7.
- We (my Husband andI) have been working Maura Jacobson Puzzles for years in both New York Magazine and her published crossword journals...we have never been disappointed and always cleverly challenged (a different topic for each puzzle)...me can't wait for the next Jacobson entry
- Buying on Amazon is amazing. Everything I have ever ordered has come earlier than expected. My mom loves these crossword puzzles and it was part of a mother's day gift. OF COURSE i got it in time and NY Magazine puzzles are her favorite. Hope another version comes, have bought all 3.
Thanks Again, love shopping on Amazon.

- These puzzles are absolutely hilarious! Yet again, I'm blown away by the exquisite surprises, twists and turns. I've been stumped on a few of them for a few days now, but I'm not giving up! Shortz is, hands down, a genius. Try your hand at the masterful art within these pages, and enjoy the furrowed brow and laughs!
