  1. This is the very best collection of Middleton's crostic puzzles that I have ever encountered. (And I have done a lot of his puzzles over the years.)

  2. Haven't used it yet but was disappointed that I didn't pick up in the description that it wasn't spiral bound. Lots of puzzles but working with it will be annoying. Not sure, but I thought the paper stock was not as heavy as spiral bound crostics. I have a feeling I'll have to forego half the puzzles because of that.

    My bad!!!

  1. This is a must for anyone who just can't stand being stumped, frustrated or lock-out of accomplishing the Sunday New York Times puzzle! Here are THE words that help crossword puzzle editors handle those difficult intersections when they must join up two words but can't find the right set of letters -- well here is a list of the words they turn to -- and we should too! INDISPENSABLE! Even Will Shortz likes this book! He's quoted on the cover as saying "...a good [book] for crossworders to study." -- And he's THE man when it comes to making our world a wonderful living hell!

  2. I purchased this book for my uncle who is an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast. Finally, I was able to give him a gift that he could put to good use. He loves it!

2 comments about The New York Times Super Saturday Crosswords: The Hardest Crossword of the Week.
  1. I was completely disappointed in this book. It is quite possible that these puzzles ran on Saturdays in 1993 and 1994, as the copyright notation indicates. They are not, however, remotely in a league with the current Saturday level of difficulty. This is deceptive advertising at its most crass. It reflects very poorly on the editor, Will Shortz (who currently edits the NYT puzzles and surely knows that what I am saying is true), on the Times itself, and on Amazon, which ought to stop selling this slim but nevertheless sleazy volume.

  2. it isn't easy to find difficult puzzles. this book is great. i wish there were more of them. the harder the better. thank you

  1. Puzzlers know that the Sunday Times crosswords are not necessarily the hardest ones--those are the puzzles that appear on Fridays and Saturdays in the Times--but they are much bigger, about half again as large as the daily puzzles. And they also have a title--which helps the solver to figure out what the puzzle's theme might be--and they supply name the constructor of the puzzles, something that doesn't occur with the daily puzzles.

Doing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle is a habit with many of the Times's readers, but for those of us who don't live in New York or buy the Sunday Times, this is the next best thing. I know I wouldn't be able to feel like a Sunday was complete until I had done the Sunday puzzle.

My method, in case anyone is interested, is to tear each puzzle page out and put it on a clipboard. That way one doesn't have to deal with any awkwardness from trying to do the puzzles while holding a largeish book, although I've done that, too. Also, this allows for your pencil marks to remain crisp whereas if you leave the puzzle in the book the softness of the underlying pages makes your pencil marks a little blurry.

Make no mistake, these are wonderful puzzles and the price is very reasonable.

    Scott Morrison

  2. Whilst the puzzles in this book are regular Sunday size, the grids are smaller than I like, which makes it kind of difficult to read the numbers in the boxes. Also, I would say 80% of these were printed in the Wall Street Journal Omnibus which I received for Christmas, and would recommend that one of 250 puzzles with larger grids.

5 comments about Humorous Cryptograms.
  1. There's a real reward doing these humorous puzzles, a good chuckle at the end. I'm a cryptogram nut these days and I found this one a real hoot. Each puzzle rated a least a smile and at most a belly laugh. If you like this kind of puzzle, by all means get this one. Oh yes, the pages are nice and sturdy, so you don't have to worry about making holes in the paper when you erase.

  2. At this writing, I have worked 283 puzzles and have found three of them to have errors (puzzles 59, 256 and 272). While solving the puzzles has been fun, it's disconcerting to stumble across an error.

It's still a fun book. Some of the puzzles almost solve themselves. Others require you to dig deep into your knowledge of spelling and syntax, as well as the personality of the author of the quotation itself. Most are somewhere in between. In fact, if you're a multitasker like me, you can watch TV or even talk on the phone while solving the puzzles.

I'm beginning to panic at this point because I've only got 117 puzzles left! All in all, I recommend the book, errors notwithstanding.

  3. This inexpensive, sturdy, entertaining book contains 400 humorous, comical and sometimes even witty quotes, drawn from a myriad of personalities and encoded in challenging substitution cipher, guaranteed to keep you busy for hours.
It also includes an introduction with general hints for solving cryptograms and, for those who take a wrong turn, two sections with clues on the solution of each puzzle. The full solutions are presented at the back of the book, along with an index of authors and quotations for those searching for quotes from one or another individual in particular.
The puzzles vary in difficulty, and you will find yourself using your intuition, your knowledge of spelling and syntax, and even your familiarity of each quoted individual to figure them out.
If you love cryptograms, buy this book. I can assure you that besides getting a healthy workout for your mind, you will also find, at the end of each puzzle, a gratifying laugh, chuckle or smile.
    --Reviewed by Maritza Volmar

  4. This is a great book which makes you laugh after solving each cryptogram, and I've been doing a few cryptograms a day for the last month. One can do it without clues or opt to have one or two clues.
The print is great, the size is perfect to carry it everywhere and I would highly recommend this book to cryptogram lovers. I plan to buy this book for my mother-in-law who loves solving puzzles and cryptograms.
I've done over half the cryptograms and have found only 2 errors, but it didn't bother me. Most are of medium difficulty, and once in a while there is one which is more difficult.

  5. Another item that is received when scheduled, and I am very pleased with the merchandise as well as the service!

  1. I do the puzzles on breaks at work. The answers are in the back should one not know the word. A dictionary of all the words used is in the back also, which is convinient.

  2. A simple book for any age that can write and read - a fun way to keep Spanish vocabulary fresh. The only reason for four stars is that there's no phonetic spelling for the new words you may come across. My students do enjoy it, and always are happy to quiz themselves on "Spanish speed" with these books during class transition times.
