  1. I have been addicted to NY Times Sunday crosswords for years. This collection is no let-down. My only complaint? Not enough of them! I ordered the Omnibus collection with this: 500 puzzles! You can't go wrong with any of the NY Times crossword publications.

  2. I love the New York Times Crosswords, and their series of spiral-bound collections are great for travel. Most paperback crossword books are difficult to keep open as you fill in the crosswords. These spiral-bound books, however, allow you to fold the book at the puzzle you're currently working on, and provide a relatively hard surface to write on as well. Plus, they are relatively slim, so they don't take up much space in a suitcase or carry-on bag. I recently purchased the New York Times little "black and white" crossword book - although the length and width are much smaller, the book itself is thicker, so overall it's bulkier and less convenient to carry. I'll stick with the larger spiral-bound versions.

  1. I love sudoku and while in Iraq I want to keep busy. This book provides quite a bit of every puzzle sudoku has to offer

  2. This book is so good, even my 7 year od daugther learned how to play this game.

  3. This will keep you busy for weeks if not months. Nice Collection of Sudoku puzzles.

  4. I loved the suduku book. It contained puzzles in there that were new that I have never seen before. It had detailed instructions for the newer puzzles even the older puzzles, so if you were new to the puzzles you would know exactly what to do. I would highly recommend this to someone else.

  5. I bought this book for and gave it as a gift to someone in a different state. I never saw the book; however, that person was grateful for the number and varying difficulty of the assorted puzzles.

5 comments about New York Times Crosswords for Your Coffee Break: Light and Easy Puzzles.
  1. The thing about crossword puzzles is that even hard-core fans sometimes like to do an easy and fun puzzle. These ones are great. An excellent puzzler should be able to complete them in 10-15 minutes or less, a decent puzzler should easily have them done in under 20 minutes. The title is no joke: these really are great puzzles for your coffee break. This little book makes a great stocking stuffer!

  2. Well, pretty easy but not THAT easy. Finishing one on a coffee break is probably not something I could always do. They are fun and in a good format.

  3. I find crosswords a way to relax and the Light and Easy series are just that. Not too hard, but engaging enough to keep me interested. The size of the puzzles makes it easy to finish one relatively quickly. The book size is convenient for carrying around. The expert crossword addict may find these too easy, but for the rest of us the Light and Easy series are fun. Great airplane/airport activity.

  4. Since I am a very enthusiastic crossword puzzler and since I live in an area of the world where they are unavailable, it isn't always easy trying to find something you like on-line. The good news is that the N.Y. Times Coffee Break book is EXACTLY what it says it is......I love it! It is easy but not
"brain-less" easy. Yes, the puzzles can be done in a coffee break! I only wish there were more puzzles in the book! I know I will finish the book too quickly. Buy and enjoy!

  5. This crossword book is WAY overpriced. I only bought it to meet the free shipping purchase amount on another item. I really consider it packing material.

3 comments about The New York Times Sunday Crossword Omnibus Volume 9: 200 World-Famous Sunday Puzzles from the Pages of The New York Times (New York Times Sunday Crosswords Omnibus).
  1. Do you look forward to the New York Times Sunday puzzle? This book has 200 of them for you along with the answers (so you don't have to wait for a week). At this price you can't go wrong.

  2. This strongly recommended 'omnibus' volume collects 200 New York Times Sunday crossword puzzles that were originally published between August 6, 2001 and June 19, 2005. Some of these puzzles were originally reprinted in recent spiral-bound, fifty-puzzle volumes of the NYT Sunday series. One puzzle appears on each page and all answers are in the back. This is slim enough for most travelers yet still offers good value, costing about a nickel per 21 x 21 puzzle. Volume 10 presumably will not be released until at least Spring 2010.

  3. I've been doing the NY Time crosswords for years and years, and I have a book of 1,000 of their puzzles which included everything from Monday through Saturday and maybe even a Sunday, too. I thought this would be similar, but it isn't. Either the clues or I am too obtuse.

Perhaps others like puzzles that have four to six clues that run the length of the puzzle, and start with "First line of quote." If I can't get the first line or a few words, I'm certainly not going to be able to get the rest. These must be "world famous" because they've stumped all but the best puzzlers.

  1. My husband & I have discovered a newfound love for crossword puzzles and, well, needed some help. This dictionary was about 40-50% helpful when we absolutely had to "cheat". We did find a lot of other useful trivia that we learned while looking for answers. Not bad, not the best. Just average and okay. Price was about what it was worth.

  2. I truly enjoy the crossword dictionary. It is very bulky, but that's because it has thousands of word definitions. I saw them at Target and they were a few dollars more. Great buy through amazon!

  3. I received this book on time and in perfect condition. It's an OK book, but at the same time I bought THE MILLION WORD CROSSWORD DICTIONARY,which has proven itself to be absolutely unbeatable insofar as helping solve crossword puzzles.

  4. This crossword dictionary is somewhat helpful. I like that it's large and easy to read. I also like that alternate words are listed by length. I bought this because it's a Merriam - Webster, a name I've always associated with good quality. However, I'm highly dissatisfied with the dictionary. It promotes itself as one of the most comprehensive crossword dictionaries available yet some basic words are not even included. I would not recommend this at all.

  1. I enjoy the scrambled actors names, really makes my Brain work. I enjoy crosswords Puzzels. I like this because it is different and easy because of spiral bound. Easy to keep your spot when you have to stop, and go back later. Big enough to read. I love Crosswords that are about movies and tv shows.

  1. This is a quality, well-crafted book. It's too heavy to keep in your bag, but great for your desk. The range of difficulties is great if some days you want a challenge but other days you just want to feel smart. My only complaint is that the paper is such high quality-- thick and glossy-- that it doesn't take ink or pencil the way it could. Overall that really isn't a big deal, and the number and variety of puzzles is great for the price!

  2. This travel-sized collection features 200 New York Times daily crossword puzzles originally printed in 2003. The puzzles are clustered from Monday to Saturday in increasing order of difficulty as shown by from one to six top hats on the page. There are 50 puzzles from each of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There are 30 Thursdays and 10 each of Friday and Saturday.
Clues appear on the left side and 4" x 4" puzzle grids appear on the right side. Answers are provided on the last 50 pages. The book is spiral bound with sturdy cardboard front and back covers. Unfortunately the puzzles herein overlap with about 75% of the 2007 page-a-day calendar content instead of mixing puzzles from several years.
The predominance of easier early week puzzles make this a great gift for a casual or new crossword fan. This will be a fixture in my suitcase for some time and I hope that St. Martin's Griffin will print a second 'Little Black (and White)' collection.

  3. Can't wait for the next edition on this one. I hope they don't change the small format. It's just great! Someday I hope to be as good as Rex.

  4. A friend sent me this book while I was recovering from hip surgery and I really enjoyed doing the crosswords. The book is very nicely bound so it makes an excellent gift for someone who likes doing crossword puzzles.

  5. I am about a 1/3 of the way completed and am taken aback at how many of the answer pages don't correspond to the puzzles properly. Otherwise, not much to say -- it's a year's worth of puzzles from the NYT.

  1. As a person who loves to do crosswords but not very good at doing them this book fills the bill. I find actually being able to complete the puzzles, or most of a puzzle, is very satisfying. The puzzles are not too easy but also not too difficult that they become frustrating. Random House also has a PuzzleMeter on the back cover that lets the reader pick the difficulty and style of the puzzle book. I would highly recommend this new addition to the collection of puzzles from the New York Times.

  2. Often on facing Tuesday to Saturday's puzzles I can do nothing but look up references or directly cheat. As a crossword fan, but not a English mother-tonguer, this collections of NYT's Monday crosswords are my best-loved crossword book.----They are just on my solving skill level. This book is for eveyone who with few solving experience but eagerly want to enjoy high-standard puzzles.

  3. I am a crossword addict, but after a tough day at work, I don't have the energy for the Sunday- level NYT Crossword. So when I just want to unwind I get out this book and do one of the puzzles. It refreshes my memory for clues that help me do harder puzzles when I am not fatigued, and still lets me get my crossword fix. The same quality as the other puzzles... just puzzles for the frazzles!

  4. This book had nice big, easy to read puzzles that are not very difficult. I really enjoyed the spiral binding. My only issue is that 50 puzzles fly by pretty quickly when they are this easy to solve, and for $9.95 I would expect a little bit more.

  5. I haven't looked at the first puzzle and I am already bummed out. For $9.95 plus the shipping I expected more puzzles than I received. I consided 50 puzzles to be a rip for aproximately $15.00.

5 comments about Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges into Music (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader).
  1. The BRI (Bathroom Reader's Institute) has been around for a long time with dozens of fun filled trivia subjects in the general series, and now "Uncle John" has been specializing the last couple of years in specific subjects, all great fun to read. The latest, "Plunges Into Music", is a delightful plunge (pun intended) into the world of music and will not disappoint, whether you're a rock fan, opera or country. Even non-musicians will dig this volume.
We get more trivia than we can remember, plus interesting bios on composers, instruments, and album history. It's carefully researched, as all BRI volumes are, but I did spot one boo-boo in the footnotes that run along the bottom of the pages, which makes it fun to point out.
The claim is that a Marty Robbins tune in 1961 was the first to have distorted guitar. I have a CD from jazz guitarist maestro Django Reinhardt that contains a song from the year of his death, 1953, called "Night and Day" that has undeniable and easily heard distortion. Some claim Link Wray's "Rumble", the instrumental hit from the late '50's also had distortion. It certainly has a gnarly tone, fer sure. But that's a very small bone to pick. Like the other volumes, this is a great read from front to back or hit and miss. I also recommend, if you can find it, Dave Marsh's "Rock Book Of Lists", both volumes.

  2. The men in my life LOVE the Bathroom Reader. I buy them for my husband who gives it to my Dad, then Dad gives it to my Brother, then my Brother gives it to our Brother-in-Law, and Lord only knows who he gives it too. I have never felt I've wasted money on Uncle John's Bathroom Readers. They are always interesting, perfectly suitable for a 30 minute sit-on. Highly recommended.

  3. My hubby loves these readers. Since he is always breaking out in a song, we thought this would be the perfect gift! He loves it.

  4. Uncle Johns books never fail to be a great read. Wonderful trivia-history-the small snippets at the bottom of each page-a FINE book! If you are a music lover-and even if you're not-you will enjoy this book!

  5. My husband is a touring singer, musician and music trivia genius - so this was a perfect gift for him! Although I didn't think it could happen, this book actually had some facts that he DIDN'T know! It's a great book if you enjoy music and interesting music facts and stories.
